Then COVID hit, and our online demand had to also support Chromebook usage along with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google video meetings. I cannot count how many times I got a text message from someone in the family complaining about the WiFi being down, cutting in & out, or just slow.
Enter the Netgear Orbi...unboxing was super easy, and the paper instructions were very minimal (as is usual these days). However, once you download the app to your phone, it walks you through the setup process quite easily. I now have 1 Orbi device on each floor of our house, and I have now only gotten one complaint in the past 7 weeks. The Orbi app actually said that it was offline, but it came back up fine after I rebooted the main/router Orbi device. That's it.
In seven weeks, I would have rebooted the WiFi module or the entire cable modem at least a dozen times...probably closer to two dozen times. And, we now get solid WiFi signal in our backyard living space.
After many hours of frustration and about to call a local tech (from reviews I have doubts that Orbi tech support could figure out a networking issue) I was still determined to fix it. And was Googling all over for different networking ideas.
I was almost going to reinstall the entire printer driver when I noted that the IP addresses for all my working connected devices, including 3 Tivo's, an HP 577 color printer, postage meter, DVD etc all had IP addresses in the .1. (3rd place number) range. I haven't set up networks for years or had to get into the older routers. But I discovered the DHCP and router IP started at 192.168.1. which is above the .0. of the printer IP. Hmm, I wondered what if not really knowing what I am doing change the router address to and the beginning of the DCHP look up to 192.168.0.1. I was scared I would screw everything up. In fact, after I entered it I hit cancel getting cold feet, however, it was too late and it was changing the setting.
Then I heard this noise.... the printer was printing the test pages I had tried to print. However, I immediately lost Internet connections so now have a connecting working printer but everything else stopped working.
Thankfully, Orbi popped up a message telling me I had to do an ipconfig /release and /reset (seemed to recall once had to do that a decade ago but really don't have the tech knowledge to know what am doing. But remembered to get a cmd command line etc... and it WORKED! Internet reconnected and all devices worked.
The only other issue is I have a home office and a Pitney Bowes postage machine that has to "call home' every 90 days or to reload postage - but it needs an Ethernet port to connect. So for years I had a cheap extender next to it with ports and worked fine. Now I need a separate Orbi just for the postage meter - in the separate room not easily reachable by stringing cable from the main router.
I got the Orbi router with 2 satellites. Home is about 2300 sq feet on one floor, Frank Lloyd Wright-like with thick concrete-block walls. To reach the far bedroom had used another extender placed as close as possible to a wall in the back of a huge walk-in closet. With the extender, with a phone in the bedroom was only getting on the old router (TP-Link AC5400) about 20Mbs connection (on a cox gigabit cable). With the Orbi satellite, the backlink shows poor, yet I am getting about a 220Mbs much faster connection.
I have a laptop (newer Asus) much closer to both the router and Satellite 1 in the postage meter room - in direct line of sight to both. But am only getting about 150Mbs down which is odd since closer. I get about 580Mbs down on my PC directly connected by router by Ethernet and about 2 feet from the router.
Now that everything is working, Orbi is great. But I have to have an expensive satellite just for postage meter connection, and why would prior routers work on the printer with .0. IP but the default on Orbit have to reconfigure the DHCP range. Not sure if I had to also change the router address down to the .0. range, but I did and it worked. I have to remember I changed the routers IP from the default to log into it.
