Product Description
Product Description
Music lovers rejoice! Those looking for the ultimate in CD playback from an audiophile-grade component will be impressed with a high-precision, multi-bit D/A converter and 128 x oversampling. Others looking for convenience will thrill at the sight of 6-disc capability, 6 repeat modes, 40 track programming—and no worries about interruptions to your music, with the ability to change 5 discs while the last one is still playing. All will marvel at the crystal-clear playback, enhanced by our exclusive VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry), for a smoother sounding audio signal. Just as crucial to your sonic enjoyment is Direct Digital Path, a heavily shielded, high-quality cable that protects the delicate audio signal from noise emitted by the surrounding circuits. Housed in a sturdy chassis graced with a brushed aluminum front panel, the DX-C390 is ready to provide hours of uninterrupted music—for the soundtrack to your life. Key Technology Features: 192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.RI (Remote Interactive): With Onkyo’s exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What’s more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod to your receiver through Onkyo’s RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can’t be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music. VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but can’t remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result — a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s. MP3 Playback: This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

Unfortunately, the CD format is not as fool proof as we were told, when it originally came on the market. Certainly better than Cassette tapes, but no match for vinyl.. Tried and true. With reasonable care vinyl records will last a lifetime, or more.
Now that I have revealed my bias for vinyl, I should add that this is a nice CD changer. It has a nice clear sound, although CD's do have a mechanical sound due to their digital nature. That is the nature of the CD format. However, if you have a lot of CD's from those years when CD's were popular this is probably a good choice. I got it due to the good reviews (close to five stars).
You should probably use a coaxial cable to connect to your receiver if your receiver or amplifier has a digital port to connect it to. The owner's manual says this will provide the best sound, and I agree. Otherwise, simply use an RCA/ Phono audio connecting cable to make the connection. The player comes with this cable, although it is a pretty spindly cable. I noticed an improvement when I used a Monoprice RCA/Phono audio cable I had on hand. You can get one of these for less than four dollars. I finally ordered the coaxial cable (not included), which is not much more money. To my ears this gave the best sound. The Onkyo DXC390 also, offers an optical/digital port to connect the CD changer.
The Onkyo has a number of programmable features I have not even used. I probably won't, either. For those that want these features it is nice they are there. All in all, I don't see how you can go wrong for less than 150.00 dollars.
As with any product there are some negative reviews, many of which point to skipping discs. As I mentioned, I encountered the same problem. After cleaning them they now play perfectly, except ones that are very badly damaged. Many CD's have been used in automobile CD players and have probably been miss handled. I know this happened to some of our CD's. The same as with vinyl, CD's need to be cared for properly to stay scratch free, and free of muck. After playing them, store vinyl in the album jacket, or for CD's put them back in their case. Store both vertically.
Not a huge choice in this market. The Onkyo seems to rate better than most. I am very happy with it. Love the green sort of bar shaped light on the front, when it is playing. It really improved the sound of our CD collection, when we added it to our surround sound system. I am very happy.
I have used the machine for 11 days now, & it has worked well with commercially recorded CDs. I played a 10-CD set of Haydn's Complete Piano Sonatas with no problem. It doesn't remember where I stopped, if I didn't finish a CD, but it is easy to move to where I want to resume. I've tried only 2 .mp3 CDs I've made, but navigating them is problematic. Each work of music seems to play, not as a separate file, but part of one file with the other pieces. I just hope the Onkyo lasts much longer than the Magnavox!
