Comfortable, Accurate Mix Headphones

Like the NS-10s before them, Yamaha's HPH-MT7 Studio Monitor Headphones are designed to cast a white-hot spotlight on the problem areas of your audio. From the studio to the stage, these high-performance cans will help put the finishing touches on your mixes and paint your source material in a realistic light. Yamaha HPH-MT7s are loaded with full-range 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers for accurate sound reproduction across the entire audible spectrum. Their comfortable ABS headband, ear cups, and pads are designed to stand up to long mixing hours. The Yamaha HPH-MT7s include a carry bag, 10-foot detachable cable, and 1/4" adapter.

Closed-back, circumaural design

There are two factors at play here: the closed-back earcups, and a circumaural (around-the-ear) design. The closed backs mean your Yamaha HPH-MT7 Studio Monitor Headphones offer increased isolation from outside sources, suiting them to stage use where you're surrounded by loud audio. Their circumaural design means they seal around the ears to create the big bass needed for mixing applications.

Should I mix with headphones?

Monitoring in a reliable, treated environment with speakers you trust is always going to trump mixing on headphones. But today's mixing headphones have gotten so advanced that, for audio folks without a great room and reliable speakers, they're sometimes a better alternative. Take the Yamaha HPH-MT7s. These headphones are built for mixing from the ground up. Their drivers and ear cups have been designed to eliminate extraneous resonance, ensuring that what you hear in your HPH-MT7s remains true to the audio source. Headphones also have the added advantage of being portable — mix at the beach or at the coffee shop if you feel so inclined.

Business or pleasure?

Making great mixes means getting your hands dirty. That means hearing things that are sometimes unpleasant — room peaks, bass buildup, shrill sibilance, noisy guitar amps, and so on. As a result, the Yamaha HPH-MT7s are not Sweetwater's top recommendation for pleasure listening. But if you're looking to make solid mixes that translate from system to system, they should be high on your list.

Great cans for my podcast studio

I like the simple design (one wire / one connection / no stupid volume control). Very comfortable.

Great set of cans!

Well rounded sound overall. Great low end response so you know when your bass is a tad too deep and you need to back it off in the mix.

Yamaha Quality

Yamaha does not disappoint. Quality phones with great sound. Comfortable and fairly light weight. You can't go wrong with these!

No-brainer if you use Yamaha HS series monitors

These headphones are really, really great. I use a pair of HS7s and at one point employed the HS8S subwoofer but quickly realized that the sub was doing more damage to my mixes and is utterly useless in an untreated suburban basement with pergo flooring. Obviously the next plan was to buy a decent pair of cans in order to monitor the low end. These do the job so very well!!! I've been having trouble demystifying the subtle yet punchy/thumpy kick drum ala Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album and boy oh boy was I able to dial in the best mix yet of my upcoming single literally the day I got the headphones. Spend about half an hour to an hour listening to a whole variety of your favorite songs from bunch of different genres and get used to the bass response. Then throw on your mix and compare. Of course, a good final mastered mix sounds fantastic on these cans but I wouldn't really use these for monitoring high mids and high frequencies. The low mids, lows and sub lows are the frequencies that translate really well to the HS7s and other speaker systems/headphones I have. For some reason, I have not had much luck with translation when it comes to the overall leveling of instruments and gain staging. I am still a bit of a novice in regards to mixing/producing/mastering so I suppose there is a learning curve that has yet to take place for me as I just received them today (the headphones aren't even broken-in) but I use my monitors for gain staging and leveling. For me, these phones are solely for the low end and I am so so so happy I finally grabbed a pair - I'm sort of frustrated at myself as to why I never bought them long ago!! If you use HS5s or HS7s, put these in your cart and just place the order. Simple as that. I really don't think you'll look back unless you're trying to buy a pair that is three or four times the price.
