Comfortable, Accurate Mix Headphones

Like the NS-10s before them, Yamaha's HPH-MT5 Studio Monitor Headphones are designed to cast a white-hot spotlight on the problem areas of your audio. From the studio to the stage, these high-performance cans will help put the finishing touches on your mixes and paint your source material in a realistic light. Yamaha HPH-MT5s are loaded with full-range 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers for accurate sound reproduction across the entire audible spectrum. Their comfortable ABS headband, ear cups, and pads are designed to stand up to long mixing hours. The Yamaha HPH-MT5s include a carry bag, 10-foot detachable cable, and 1/4" adapter.

Closed-back, circumaural design

There are two factors at play here: the closed-back earcups, and a circumaural (around-the-ear) design. The closed backs mean your Yamaha HPH-MT5 Studio Monitor Headphones offer increased isolation from outside sources, suiting them to stage use where you're surrounded by loud audio. Their circumaural design means they seal around the ears to create the big bass needed for mixing applications.

Should I mix with headphones?

Monitoring in a reliable, treated environment with speakers you trust is always going to trump mixing on headphones. But today's mixing headphones have gotten so advanced that, for audio folks without a great room and reliable speakers, they're sometimes a better alternative. Take the Yamaha HPH-MT5s. These headphones are built for mixing from the ground up. Their drivers and ear cups have been designed to eliminate extraneous resonance, ensuring that what you hear in your HPH-MT5s remains true to the audio source. Headphones also have the added advantage of being portable — mix at the beach or at the coffee shop if you feel so inclined.

Business or pleasure?

Making great mixes means getting your hands dirty. That means hearing things that are sometimes unpleasant — room peaks, bass buildup, shrill sibilance, noisy guitar amps, and so on. As a result, the Yamaha HPH-MT5s are not Sweetwater's top recommendation for pleasure listening. But if you're looking to make solid mixes that translate from system to system, they should be high on your list.

Comfortable, perfect for mixing

Since I got these a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been using these almost daily for recording and mixing scores for some film projects that I’m involved with. Right away my finished work sounded much more balanced on ‘real world’ speakers (iPad, TV speakers) than the results I was getting from my previous headphones and monitors. Especially the bass! I have discovered that it is way easier to get the bass where I want it with these headphones. That was my biggest problem before and these have been proven to be a valuable mixing tool.

They are very comfortable too. I bet I wore them off and on for 10 hours one day and I do not remember experiencing any discomfort.

Overall, I am very happy with the Yamaha HPH-MT5 headphones. I’m getting great, balanced sounding material with less effort than before. Thanks!

Definitely Doing the Trick

I have the Yamaha monitors in my studio, but being a home studio, the best I can get the acoustics in the room is less than perfect. I thought as a second reference these headphones might be a good choice because they might represent what my own monitors would sound like in a well designed room. As it turns out, they do sound a heck of a lot like my monitors, but I seem to be able to get more picky in the mids, which results in a better translating mix. Totally digging these.

Fine Sound

I like the sound of these headphones. What I don't like is that after a while they squeeze my head too tight and there is no adjustment for this. Maybe my head is too big?

They do their job

I've been on a bit of a headphone journey, saw a couple trusted reviewers speak highly of these, so I took my chances. I'd say they're pretty good stock, and I do prefer them with upgraded pads. I first tried big, angled protein leather ones which were too boomy, and now I'm trying regular-size/shape velour ones that aren't boomy but too close to my Dumbo ears and brought back a little shrillness. I wouldn't say they're totally shrill headphones (regardless of pads), but that upper mid thing that a lot of monitoring cans seem to push to help them be analytical can be a bit too much, IMO. These don't do that as much as Sony 7506s, for example, but then again, I wouldn't say these sound as "solid" as those, overall, either. Speaking of solid, they feel PRETTY plastic-y, but I wouldn't say they feel cheap. They're just light, which does help with comfort. But circling back, I would plan on upgrading your pads on these - well worth it both to improve comfort AND sound. I'm thinking once I get bigger velour pads, they'll be up to a full four stars for me :) Oh, and important context: I don't and never planned to use these for standalone monitoring. (ALWAYS have two or three monitoring sources!) Currently, I'm going back and forth between these, the AKG K371s, and IK Multimedia iLoud Micro speakers. I'd say these are the least "fun" of the three to listen to, but then again, that's their job. "If your mix sounds good on these..."
