An Elite Professional Piccolo from Powell Sonaré

For over a century, Powell Flutes has reigned as a producer of e some of the most beloved and sought-after instruments in the industry. The Sonaré PS-850 piccolo is certainly no exception! This beautiful piccolo offers the best in playability and durability thanks to its unique composition, making it a favorite among flutists here at Sweetwater. Both the headjoint and the body are constructed from resin-infused wood, which makes the instrument highly stable and resistant to the elements. But it's not just about durability: the resin-infused wood allows the PS-850 to retain the feel and tonal characteristics of grenadilla, giving you the freedom to perform with a delectable spectrum of colors. What's more, the Powell Sonaré piccolo's hand-cut headjoint offers players an easy-blowing feel and the flexibility they need to perform at the highest level. And with its robust silver-plated keywork and split E mechanism, the PS-850 piccolo will delight professionals and empower developing musicians.

Resin-infused wood body

The Powell Sonaré PS-850 possesses superior playability and tonality while minimizing its sensitivity to environmental changes. It's all because of its ingenious resin-infused wood body. With this unique construction, the PS-850 retains all the best characteristics of a wood piccolo, such as the colorful tone and superb resonance. And by incorporating resin into its composition, the instrument will remain highly stable. Thus, it becomes resistant to external factors such as climate, temperature, and humidity, saving you money on unnecessary repair costs. As such, the PS-850 is the perfect solution for piccolo players who perform both indoors and outdoors.

Flawless silver-plated keywork

Beautiful tone and appearance mean nothing if the keywork is anything but perfect. Thankfully, the PS-850 checks that box as well. The Sonaré piccolo features durable silver-plated keys that feel pleasing and comfortable beneath your fingers. As you play this piccolo, you'll notice the fluid action that lets you glide across all registers of the instrument with ease. This is thanks to the 10k white gold springs, which give this piccolo a smooth response and add subtle nuance to the instrument's tonal color. The PS-850 comes standard with a split E mechanism, ensuring its viability among professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Powell Flutes: a legacy of artistry and innovation

Powell Flutes began as a true labor of love. In 1910, jeweler Verne Q. Powell fashioned himself a silver flute with silver sourced from silver dollars, watch casings, and spoons. This impressive display of metalworking inadvertently launched his career as a flute maker. In 1926, he founded his own company and quickly earned a reputation for building the finest-quality French flutes. Indeed, Powell Flutes took the industry by storm and became quickly embraced by flutists from around the world. In the years since, Powell Flutes has been distinguished by constant innovation. They created the first all-14k gold flute and the one-and-only 14k white gold flute; they designed a platinum flute for the 1939 World’s Fair. They were the first company to manufacture a Cooper Scale flute. Powell Flutes patented their own alloy, Auramite, and developed a groundbreaking method for extruding tone holes. The company also holds the title for having built the only handmade flute to have been played in space! To this day, Powell’s legacy of artistry and innovation endures with every hand-finished flute that emerges from their factory in Maynard, Mass.
