My wife surprised me with a G9 widescreen monitor for Christmas. This freed up my original 42" 4K monitor. Instead of shelving it, why not employ it to display all four older computers at the same time since 4K resolution is exactly four times the dimensions of standard HD resolution (1920x1080).
Unfortunately, my 4K monitor only has PiP for two inputs, but I needed four. Not wanting to let a perfectly good, high quality 4K monitor go to waste, I looked around everywhere for a 4-port PiP matrix switch. The OREI 4K Multi HDMI Viewer Quad 4 in 1 Out Switcher was the perfect solution, and well under the cost of some "professional" models.
Setup was super easy. I connected all four monitor HDMI cables (of various quality levels) to the switcher, and connected the switcher to the 4K monitor via one high quality HDMI cable. Note, as I found out later, cable quality matters, so try to use four input cables of decent quality and of the same brand/model. Using different cables will display different quality outputs. Use the best HDMI cable you have for output.
From the front panel, I toggled through options until quad-mode activated. Suddenly, all four computers showed up on the screen, each on in their individual corner, all in 1920x1080 (60Hz) resolution, and including sound from each computer.
With all four computer connected to one monitor via the switch, I wondered if it could also act as a KVM so I could control each computer with just one set of keyboard/mouse. Unfortunately, this switcher does not act as a KVM - it only combines multiple video/sound inputs into one output.
Instead of buying a separate KVM, I set up special (free to use) software on all four computers. The newest computer was designated as "master", and the other three computer set to be clients. This allowed the use of just one set of keyboard/mouse on one computer to control all the others. It was cinch to set up, and works perfectly! Saved a few hundred bucks not having to purchase a KVM.
My desk looks so much cleaner now, with reduced cabling and just one set of monitor/keyboard/mouse where there used to be four sets. Quality is exactly as expected. I am very pleased with this purchase.
I gave this product 5 stars, and it is well deserved. Everything works exactly as advertised. Some random observations:
+Get the best cables possible. There is visible difference when using lesser quality cables. This product does not reduce video quality, but using cheaper cables will definitely degrade output. If in doubt, use four cables from the same manufacturer for the video inputs. Use the highest quality HDMI cable you have for the video output (rated at 4K 60Hz minimum).
+Do not lose the remote control or manual! Using chassis buttons is clumsy. Using the remote brings up a nice menu with many features, all well organized on the screen.
+Some screen modes stretch or compress the picture in order to fit the selected picture box. I tried changing the computer's output settings, but none of my computers had dedicated graphics cards and could not scale to the matching dimensions. This made some modes visually unusable due to stretching and/or squeezing.
+As noted above, this device will scale video inputs to match the selected output dimensions. It also seems to alter the output when refresh rates don't match. If you don't want to lose quality, make sure all computer outputs match exactly with your desired display options, including refresh rate.
+This device carries audio from your computers. You can hear any one of the inputs, or a mix of all inputs. My monitor has acceptable built-in speakers, and played sound from the computers right away, without having to add external speakers or setting up anything special. Less clutter!
+The only complaint I have is that my monitor does not turn off when the computers go to sleep. You can see it's still on (backlight bleeds a little), stays on all night, and never turn off. For some strange reason, the monitor's own internal sleep timer does not engage, almost like it's still receiving a signal. I have to manually turn off the matrix switch (via remote control as there is no power button) in order for my monitor to turn off.
The first was simply 3 to one and the second was 4 to one with power, but they both turned out to be more work than anticipated. This device takes maybe a second or two to switch between HDMI devices, and most importantly it has yet to fail me or even troubleshoot any issues.
I would recommend this product.
- unit is small, metal, well constructed
- remote is easy to use
- great for watching multiple videos or one video source and a desktop source
- very little lag
- no frame loss that I can tell (streaming video)
- Switching is nearly instant
- Several modes/layouts
- Remote covers all functions and a few extras like power and resolution.
- price is good for what you get
Not so good:
- it stretches sources so text in particular may not be readable
- power light is on all the time and is very bright
- physical buttons are labeled oddly. “Audio” does what it says—switches audios sources—but it also has a hidden feature that if you hold it down the source text toggles on or off. “Main” changes source order for modes that support that—label makes no sense. “Mode” changes layout—not very clear but better than “main.”
- Monitor will never sleep unless you turn the switcher off
- You can only turn it off via remote. There is no auto off.
- On screen source labels are either on or off (with audio button long press). I wish it would briefly show you the source or else have lights on the unit.
- Remote provides direct audio source controls but not direct video source controls. You have to keep pressing the Mode button on remote or unit to cycle through video sources.
Onto the modes/layouts. When I talk about text I just pulled up a Google search in Chrome.
Full Screen Mode
Resolution is great. Not much else to say. Works like you think.
2x2 Mode
All four sources scaled. Positions are fixed. Text unreadable but it is good for monitoring changes or multiple videos. You can read it if you scale to 175% or more.
Side-Center Mode
This gives you 2 larger scaled views in the middle and two very stretched views on the sides. The side views are pretty useless but the center ones are good since it is the largest you can show 2 sources without stretching. Text is barely readable. Positions are fixed so only inputs 2 and 3 can be in the middle.
1x2 Mode
Two inputs side-by-side. You can show inputs 1+2 or 3+4, no other combinations. Text is more readable but you still need to scale it up to 150-200% to work on it. Both are stretched vertically.
1 + 3x1 Mode
1 large square screen and 3 scaled small screens. This is my favorite because the large screen, while slightly stretched vertically, is usable. Scale to 150% and it is very clear. The other three are good for video or monitoring something. You can cycle any source to be the large screen. It rotates around: 1234, 2341, 3412, etc.

+Software/hardware
+No lag or black screen
+PIP in any corner, 3 different sizes
+Super intuitive
+-Price
-Only 2 inputs & 1 output
-Only 1080p/60
-Only Orei model to offer PIP resizing and change corner
Works great for my dual monitor PC and security camera setup, I bought this specific version of switcher because you're able to move the PIP window to any corner of the monitor and cycle through three different sizes. It switches the source instantaneously between inputs, with no black screen, as well as with size and preferred corner, the software and hardware running the switcher is great! Remote is easy to use and has no lag. Nothing about the product feels cheap in any way, solidly built metal chassis, runs very cool. I added rubber feet to the bottom so it didn't scratch my desk, it may not have.
Two issues, both of which I knew before hand, but issues none the less; it's only capable of 1080p/60 and there's only two source inputs and one output. You can definitely tell there's image loss viewing 4K security cameras through the 1080p splitter vs. directly into the HDMI port on the monitor (even though my monitors are only 1080p)
I wish Orei would manufacture a 3+ input 1+ output unit that you're able to move the PIP window around the screen and was capable of handling 4K - this switcher will work until then.
