Product Description
The Bolio reusable hemp coffee filter makes a full-body pour over coffee mimicking the brew characteristics of a paper filter. We, like you are coffee dorks, seeking the best options, prioritizing flavor above all else. After trying all the other reusable cloth filters on the market we decided that the biggest issues was clogging, and flavor which was caused by the tiny fibers of cotton. We worked for months, testing and retesting all the various cloth types and thread-count and finally found the perfect fiber type and and thread count for making coffee. You should see our piles of samples. Hemp cloth is superior fiber for filtration for many reasons but the biggest are all due to fiber size. Hemp fibers are massive and don't ball up, get fuzzy and fall off like cotton. The big size reduces the amount of water and fines that are absorbed and trapped inside the fibers. Hemp more mimics fine steel wires catching the coffee grinds and passing the liquid through, which is exactly what you want. Cotton cotton fibers ball up, catch little bits of coffee and oil and then never let go, requiring the cloth be scrubbed and destroyed to remove the fines. Easy to Use The Bolio hemp filters are easy to fill, lift out, clean, and dry for future use. Hemp Filters are reusable hundreds of times and are great for making smooth, natural tasting coffee. Hemp and paper are almost the same in their flow rate coefficient so it will feel the same as what your used to using. Easy to Clean Besides rinsing your filter after use, we recommend cleaning your filter after about 20-30 uses or when every the filter seems to develop a coffee aroma. This can be done by boiling your filter in water and white vinegar. This will remove some of the excess coffee oils buildup and will prolong the use of your filter. Made here in the USA…mostly. We sew most of our filters here in the rugged mountains of Colorado.

This filter is easy to clean (simply rinse under the tap in hot water). Advice is to boil it every week or so to remove oils that accumulate. This makes sense. One reviewer suggested letting the grounds dry in the filter, then just shake them out. It does work well, drying completely in a very short time, but I still rinse it under hot tap. Realize, of course, that coffee stains.
I have used it in substitution for the white, bleached, paper disposable coffee filters. These disposable filters are convenient, and make good coffee and are easy to use. However, of course, I don’t like the idea of throwing the used filters away. (Even though paper is a natural, biodegradable product).
Upon delivery, the new filter is noticeably whiter than after having been used. The hemp cloth filter will darken a little after usage.
The cloth filter is very easy to clean. I recommend multiple rinsing to get rid of all the absorbed brew solids so that they do not remain and impair the flavor of the next coffee made.
Note to self: don’t use dish wash soap to wash out the coffee filter to get it cleaned better unless you like your next cup of coffee to come with bubbles!
I have use the metal mesh coffee filters previously. This hemp cloth filter is better in that the coffee made has almost no fines or sediment compared to coffee made with the metal mesh filter.
The coffee made with the hemp filter does taste a little differently than when made with a paper filter. I think the coffee oil does tend to come through the hemp filter more than in a paper filter. Some people like this richer coffee flavor profile; I don’t personally.
West of the Mississippi, most people drink their coffee black while east of the Mississippi coffee with cream and sugar is generally preferred. Consequently, the type of coffee and the degree of roasting varies with these regional taste preferences. (Of course, people are moving everywhere all the time and these regional preferences are always intermixing). Consumers who use cream and sugar in their coffee generally prefer a darker roast with more robusta coffee content. In contrast, those who drink their coffee black often prefer a lighter roast and more arabica coffee bean content. Especially Colombian arabica beans. I think that people who drink their coffee with cream and sugar would especially enjoy the richer coffee flavor profile that results from the coffee oils being allowed to infuse into the coffee from the hemp filter.
For those who like their coffee black, I have found helpful to cut back modestly on the amount of roast and ground coffee used to make the coffee. (and have to accept that I have to drink more than one cup of coffee in order to get the essential minimum dosage of caffeine required! Still another first world problem to endure with grace and humor)
More recently, however, as the fabric has been broken in, it's taken to buckling and falling into the pot if not otherwise secured in place. The first time it happened I was perturbed to say the least. There is an advertised solution available here: Pour Over Stainless Steel Coffee Cone Shaped Basket Filter Dripper and Cradle Stand used with Popular V60 Filters like Melitta, Cuisinart, Hario, Chemex - Maximum Flavor Extraction by Bolio . However, I've found that an alternative solution (a bit less than $13...I got this thing in the first place to save the $0.20/paper filter after all) is using a couple of bobby pins to hold it in place. So far, so good. The only other thing that didn't cross my mind when making the purchase was that dumping and rinsing out this filter is definitely prone to making a mess more than simply picking up and dropping the paper filters in the trash. Not a deal breaker, but something that might be worth being aware of when purchasing.
Basically, the long and short of it is, this can save you money, and you won't be sacrificing quality. If presentation is your concern though, you might want to look elsewhere, or consider having some paper filters around for occasions.
