The city of Rey is burning. With smoke billowing, fires blazing and his people fleeing, Khalid races back to defend his city, and protect his queen. But Khalid is too late to do either. This a beautiful beginning for the following book. To know where the first one stopped and the second one begins

An interesting episode. Khalid arrives home to find chaos and destruction. Shahrzad is gone. There are many strong emotions presented here but, again, this is not a complete story: merely an episode in Khalid's rather distressing life.

The Mirror and the Maze is Renee Ahdieh’s final short story (from what I can tell) in The Wrath and the Dawn duology. And lo and behold, it’s another Kahlid story! This is another short story, that’s another moment with Kahlid reflecting on all the things that have happened. Since this is technically 1.5 it’s basically taking place right at the end of The Wrath and the Dawn.

We see fire and destruction of his home and worst of all, Shazi is missing. She has left with another boy, Tariq and Kahlid is determined to get her back. Another one that was just too short for me to truly enjoy because I felt like once I got deep into it, it was over.

Overall Rating 3.5/5 stars—again, mostly because of its shortness

In the thousands & thousands of books I have read, never have I found a retelling of a story so captivating that I have not only read it once but as soon as I purchased all of the published novella's plus the books 1 & 2 (& pre-ordered 3) that I started reading it again. Mrs. Ahdieh brings you deep into her characters lives, you feel what they feel, each one is well developed that each are easily believed to have been the original characters. The story follows so wonderfully that you are trapped and cannot escape until the last word. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this version of the A Thousand and One Nights! Book Hangover 10+ because I'll reread this many times & pre-ordered the next!

Bringing the emotions to the fore of our difficult king. How do you deal with what is happening? Pain and power.

Love reading these short stories from his POV. I enjoy seeing his emotions in these. It makes you understand his character more.

Great story. Fills in the blanks between her books. Both books are great reads! And so are her next series books. Great author 😊

This review can be found on my blog, Reader Rayna, as well as Goodreads.

This short story was definitely short, but it gave a glimpse into what happened after the events of The Wrath and the Dawn from Khalid's point of view. It was fast-paced and full of death and heartbreak. Though there wasn't much to go on, there was definitely a lot more emotion from Khalid than in the previous short story of his time before the events of the first book. I thought that this gave a little bit of insight into what was going on after what happened in the first book, and that it made for a good recap.

I didn't really like the short-story. I found that it didn't bring anything new to story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A volta de Khalid pós tempestade
Reviewed in Brazil on October 24, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Hints of the curse are in the air and the sheer terror experienced by all characters is so intense the reader can feel it.

This very short novella tells the story of the city of Rey burning from Khalid's perspective. Hints of the curse are in the air and the sheer terror experienced by all characters is so intense the reader can feel it. I love that Renee Ahdieh has given us these free short snippets of her world in anticipation of the next novel.
It should be read after the first novel "The wrath and the dawn" and novellas " The crown and the arrow", "The moth and the flames ". This novella should be followed with the second novel "The Rose and the dagger". I highly recommend this entire series, although it is technically classified as YA , it has a wonderful atmosphere and the characters are mature and dynamic.
