What Causes Your French Bulldog's Dry Nose

Many dogs have dry noses, large and small, purebred and mixed. There is no one thing that causes your dog to have a dry nose. Plus, there are many types of dry nose issues dogs can develop. Basic dry dog noses can be caused by low household humidity levels, living in an arid climate, certain medications and illnesses or breed predisposition. French Bulldogs are one of the breeds most prone to developing the extreme form of dog nose dryness - nasal hyperkeratosis.

If your French Bulldog's nose is covered with layers of dry crust they may have extreme dryness called Nasal Hyperkeratosis. Nasal Hyperkeratosis is a nose tissue overgrowth that causes the nose to be covered with layers of overgrown crusty tissue. Our research has led us to believe Nasal Hyperkeratosis is an expression of a slightly depressed immune system. While not life-threatening, this condition can affect your dog's mental, emotional and physical health. The good news is Nose Butter works on all levels of dryness.

Your French Bulldog's Quality of Life

A chronically dry nose can lead to your Frenchie not living their life fully. A fully-functioning dog nose grabs smells that float by, sorts and categorizes the info as urgent or not. Like canine small bookmarking! This gives your French Bulldog the info needed to make informed dog decisions. Of course, your Frenchie is not a hunting dog, police dog or tracking dog, but their nose still provides them with the info they need to do all sorts of cool Frenchie stuff. Like finding that Cheeto under the sofa, or smelling the pizza delivery coming up the sidewalk or that you may have opened that bag of chips silently, but they can smell them!

Your French Bulldog's Nose Butter

Nose Butter nourishes your French Bulldog's nose with layers of moisturizing butters and oils. At first Nose Butter is applied multiple times a day until their nose improves. Then drop to maintenance levels of application, usually 2-3 times a week.

If you stop applying the Nose Butter and the dryness comes back, your Frenchie probably has Nasal Hyperkeratosis, which is a lifelong condition. Ongoing usage of Nose Butter will be necessary, if so. There is no cure for nasal hyperkeratosis, but the good news is the condition can be treated with continued usage of Nose Butter. We can't use sunscreen a few days and be protected all summer, same for our Frenchies and Nose Butter.

French Bulldog Nose Butter Application - #1 Dab #2 Distract #3 Done

• Scoop a bit out appropriate to the size of your dog’s nose
• Warm it in the palm of your hand before application for faster absorption
• If Nose Butter is in tube, pop in pocket to warm
• Dab Nose Butter on their nose
• Distract to keep them from licking (see next section)
• Repeat 2-3x a day until nose is back in shape (usually 2-3 days)
• Then use as needed for maintenance (usually 1-2x a week)
• If you stop using Nose Butter and the dryness comes back, your dog probably does have nasal hyperkeratosis

Dogs lick, it's kinda their thing. Licking is one of their super-powers, along with sniffing. For years we have shared tips and hints to keep dogs from licking and then the light bulb came on...Dogs Gonna Lick! So we decided to embrace licking and use it to our/your advantage when applying Nose Butter. Give them something else to lick! Treats, especially, smelly, gooey ones are great! Our fave is peanut butter on a spoon. They will lick and lick until they get the last bit. You don't need anything fancy, no gadgets, or gimmicks, just a spoon. Boom Done.

• Feed their dinner after application
• Play your dog's fave game
• Throw a ball or go for a walk
• Apply while they sleep

Uncooperative, Stubborn Dogs (Not Your French Bulldog, Of Course)

Occasionally customers tell us their dog doesn't "like" Nose Butter. Ouch! In reality, their dog dislikes being restrained in a move The Rock used in his prior career with the WWF. Some dogs just don’t like being held tightly or controlled at all. Headstrong, stubborn dogs, like French Bulldogs, will struggle with righteous indignation if held in a headlock or gripped too tightly. Plus, flat-faced dogs will try to protect their already compromised breathing - their faces.
