Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-Five dragonets are hatched under a mountain, in the care of a group of rebel dragons, the Talons of Peace. They are key to a prophecy that will end the war raging among the dragon tribes. They clearly have a destiny, but no one is sure about the role of Glory, a beautiful Rainwing. She was not one of the original five, but a replacement for an egg that was cruelly smashed in an attempt by power-hungry dragons to thwart the fulfillment of the prophecy. When her life is threatened, the dragonets stage a daring escape from the mountain but are captured by the Skywing queen, Scarlet. She forces them to participate in gladiatorlike competitions for her amusement. Each one is eventually forced to fight Peril, her champion, whose very touch is made of fire. A fight with Peril is certain death, and she instills fear in all who meet her-all but the Mudwing dragonet Clay. The two develop a cautious and unlikely friendship. As the dragonets fight to survive, and Clay's relationship with Peril deepens, thrilling secrets of their pasts are revealed. Fully fleshed-out characters have unique personalities influenced by the distinct traits of their tribes. Plot twists and turns abound, and will keep readers cheering for the dragonets to the end.-Mandy Laferriere, Staley Middle School, Frisco, TXα(c) Copyright 2011. The best book!😀

The best book!😀
I LOVE THIS BOOK! This book is amazing. The story is very good and exciting. It is also well written. It does have some violence, so I would recommend it be for about 12 years old and up. Occasionally three is some ink smudges, but they are very subtle when they appear and don't bother me and don't effect the quality. Great book for the price! This is the first book but I am DEFINITELY going to but the next in the series. This a good product and book overall.

Great series for kids and adults alike! There is some violence, but it should be okay for any reader over 12.

Okay, to be honest I kinda like the book. But I’m also a grown up. If this thing was a movie instead of a book it would have been given an R rating. Period, end of discussion. Such things as ‘eyeballs melting out of their sockets, leaving gaping holes in skulls’ and ‘dragons slowly and agonizingly burning to ashes, their faces melting away in a cascade of melted flesh’ and ‘acid burning through a dragon’s neck and it dies slowly, choking loudly and grasping for help’ kinda kill the idea that any child should read this
Also the Scavengers (humans) are treated as nothing more than prey. A delicious snack to be gruesomely dismembered and chomped on whenever one pleases. In one instance, a dragon bites a human’s head off and spits it out and it rolls on the ground as its body collapses with a literal fountain of blood pouring from the severed neck.
Also, the hero’s stance on killing is that it’s normal and part of life. Not that it’s just not bad. That it’s a good, natural thing. That for the world to function properly, you MUST kill your fellow crew mates, and death is something incredibly trivial. Not just death though. MURDER. Also there’s just something incredibly unsettling to read about a dragon’s neck being gruesomely snapped as his eyes bulge from lack of oxygen.
To add to the list of problematic themes here, it’s just incredibly unsettling to read about the scavengers being treated as snacks. What little kid is going to read that and go ‘golly gee goodness what a great book’
Don’t give this book to your kids, I beg of you. The last thing we need is a whole generation of children thinking that a little murder here and there is acceptable. Themes like this lead to internalized violence which will then be directed at the people near the children mostly all day: their classmates at school.
Kids have impressionable minds, and this sort of book should not be marketed towards literal 12 year olds.
If a grown up reads it, that’s fine. The plot is super simple and easy to follow and the writing is clear and concise. Which actually leads me to believe that the simplicity is what earned this book the age rating in the first place.
All in all, and enjoyable read FOR A GROWN UP do NOT give this to your kids.

I purchased this book for my 11-year-old son. He's a big reader but a picky one. When I find a series he likes I celebrate. And when he's done with the series, I cry because I know I'll have to go find him another series he'll like enough to read. He's read all the Dog Man, Captain Underpants, Wimpy Kid, and Middle School books, and I was at a loss as to what else he would like. After reading the Underland Chronicles together, which he thoroughly enjoyed, I thought maybe he'd like this series enough to read it on his own.

At first, he looked at the book and said, "it's a big book. It has a lot of words."🙄🙄 And I was like, "yes, but you only have to read the words one at a time."🤣🤣 Well, he had no other books to read and when at school he has to read during his downtime, so he started this one. At first, he said it was too slow, but he persevered, and eventually, he was enjoying it so much that I knew I'd found a winner. That was three books ago! He's now reading the 4th one.

For this book, he gives it a 4-star rating. He said the beginning was very slow and indeed overall the entire book was a bit slow, but still, the story was interesting. The other books he's rated 5 stars each. So I am one happy mom b/c he's enjoying this series so much, and I think it will be a while before I need to find another. 😁😁 Happy reading!

Our son HATED reading with a passion. It was a daily struggle to get him to read anything. But one day he told us he was interested in dragons and I stumbled across this series while looking for dragon books. He LOVES this series and has started reading daily. He is seven years old and going into third grade and does well reading these solo but enjoys reading them with his dad every night. He does read them out of order (he likes to pick and choose his favorite color dragon to read next) but my husband says it's not too bad out of order. He says you miss some key information but since our son is really just reading it to learn about the dragons, it's not bad. If you want to follow the whole story though, definitely start at the beginning. But I highly recommend this for any child who loves dragons. It's a great series and we're slowly collecting every book in the series. They do have graphic novels as well but our son prefers the chapter books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect story for someone who's looking for a magic world of dragons
Reviewed in Brazil on July 6, 2023
It's such an amazing story. The characters are all unique and and interesting. This story passes the idea of a mysterious, magical and curious world that easily made me get into it. It reminded me of the time when I was younger lol ha ha. If you're looking for a story that constantly feeds your curiosity, I guess this would be the perfect one.

Awesome! At first it did not catch my eye but once i saw other peaple reading i guessed it would be good to try. Now i can't stop! I'm on book 11! If you think your to old think again! My Mom reads them! One more thing. I was thinking of a tribe called the StoneWings. They have big round heads, scales that are hard as stone and can spray a mist that can turn you to stone! It would be great if you will put them in your next book . I am Evan and I am 8.

I read warrior cats before this, and I got kind of bored of it, and I found about this series! The deaths are gruesome, the character development is amazing, all of the tribes are very creative, (rainwings my personal favourite.) and I overall would just recommend this for 12 and up due to described violence.
