The JR3070CT is just another example of Makita's commitment to innovative technology and best-in-class engineering. About Makita's Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT). Makita has adapted the science of earthquake engineering into power tools with Makita's Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT). AVT is an exclusive innovative counterbalance design that provides the professional a power tool solution with up to three-times less vibration, less noise and more efficient power than the competition. Seismic research has developed this damping science to absorb shocks and protect buildings from the devastation of earthquake vibrations. AVT dynamic damping involves reciprocating engineering where a mechanical damper, effectively a counter balance weight, provides an equal and opposite anti-vibration force that puts an equal mass directly opposite the point at which the striker bolt delivers the impact joules to the breaker steel, carbide bit or recipro saw blade. As vibration is eliminated, power is efficiently increased. Without the dissipation of power through vibration, more of the generated energy in the motor can be delivered to the tool bit or blade. Makita is a worldwide manufacturer of industrial quality power tools and offers a wide range of industrial accessories. Makita applies leading-edge innovation to engineer power tools that are more compact and energy efficient, yet deliver industrial strength power and results. Makita U.S.A., Inc. is located in La Mirada, California, and operates an extensive distribution network located throughout the U.S. For more information, please call 800/4-MAKITA (800/462-5482) or visit makitatools.com. First off- this saw is a BEAST. It has more than enough power and as a result can be too powerful for delicate operations. If you need to cut a line perfectly and don't have a skilsaw or something else around and just this or a cordless, I would go cordless each time because of the variable speed located at the trigger. This has the dial for variable but even then, the blade doesn't instantly stop as with my cordless. Now, on the other hand.. for demo... or cutting trees and large branches... this thing will chew through stuff faster than I can chug a Dr. Pepper. And if you know people who like Dr. Pepper, you know we REALLY like Dr. Pepper. Okay, bad analogy. But I'm thirsty.
Pros:
Perfect for tree trimming/large branches (used it with the 9" Milwaukee Pruning Blades). This when paired with an already partially used blade when on the maximum orbit and speed cut through branches 4, 5 and 6" thick as fast or faster than the chainsaws we were using and in fact, became the preferred method for anything that we felled when cutting down a 50' Bald Cyprus as long as the 9" blades could cut it. This with the blades cut wet wood perfectly!
Demo:
Great for demo work and cutting up steel pipes and cast iron and long cut jobs. Not sure how well it handles debris with it's casing yet (I had a heck of a time with my cordless where plaster debris got inside the casing and rattled something awful and getting the black rubberized front hand grip off was not fun. The one on this seems to be made of a different rubberized material, and may prove easier to remove. Time will tell.
Power:
It gets a 15 on a scale of 1-10. I grew up a Milwaukee guy, Dad still has an old school Sawzall alive and kicking, but Makita won me over when my NiCad Milwaukee batts and drill died and I went to Lithium, and I felt compelled from various reviews and other powered Makita experiences to try their recip out, and have not been disappointed. Sure, Milwaukee gave birth to the sawzall but that doesn't mean it couldn't be improved on. Now days, however- all the brands have more than enough power that it really doesn't matter much. What matters is reliability.
Reliability:
So far so good. I haven't had any Makita issues to date except for a sole fluke issue with a battery, which was replaced under warranty. As far as this one goes, time will tell. I'll update it after a few more months of heavy use...
Precision Work:
Not so great if you need reliable stops on trigger release. Cordless is king there. But the power adjustment is quite good as is the various settings for the orbit.
Feel:
The AntiVibrationTech they use works. Way better than my dad's old brute of a sawzall (of course this has a couple decades of technology advancement on it). After hours of use with it on the largest orbit and speed settings cutting through wood branches, my hands didn't feel any different as if I hadn't been using it.
I would highly highly HIGHLY recommend this. Oh. And it actually comes with a steel case with thick padding for it. A STEEL CASE IN A PLASTIC WORLD!!!! YESSSSS!!!!! At least something is still made with quality. I think this is definitely the best of their recips to purchase guys.
But it's very heavy. A younger man would not notice. I have to decide if that is a deal killer for me. It's perfect in all other respects.
I have a dewalt that shakes me hard. I use mine for many things but cutting up tree branches is my main use since it's much safer than a chainsaw on small wood. The power and stroke, both adjustable will be helpful. Blade changes are a snap. Shoe is adjustable. I bought the extended warranty since it's so expensive and it ensures this breast will work for me a long time.
update 3/6/2020. beast is accurate. i had a entertainment center that had to go. it was large and i was by myself. this cut it up like it was a stick of butter, operated just as smooth as butter too. If you need a recip saw only buy this one or you will not know what you are missing.
I imediately tested the 3070 with a 12" Milwaukee wood blade that I picked up from HD (they got a bit of money from me afterall). I attacked a roughly 24" diameter, 12" thick at base branch which I felled a few days prior to the tool's arrival. I adjusted the RPMs and orbital motion of the saw ordinally via the separate switches, just to get a feel for the 3070s ability. The orbital switch adjusts easily and locks at the desired setting, whereas the rpm wheel located directly underneath the trigger at the handle's base works effortlessly and doesn't lock. And the blade lock mechanism makes changing blades easy with a simple twist. I was pretty rough on the blade and snapped it rather quickly, but I'd say that it was my handling of the saw, not the quality of the blade, that was at fault. When I was simply letting the saw do the work, the weight of the machine seemed to be an asset in that it just sailed through the wood with minimal guidance and presseure from me. The saw was making quick work of the branch, and I was closely paying attention to the saws guide shoe, with a concern of issues raised by other reviewers in mind. It's easy, of course, with longer blades to effect wavy and sloppy cutting if youre overly aggressive with the saw. This is why I snapped the blade. I figured out that when cutting such thick, strong material -- smooth and steady is best -- and If I'd retreated my cut properly and allowed the blade to stop outside of the cut -- my blade would have lasted. This is likely an elementary observation, but I'm not a pro, and I was curious about why a few reviewers seemed to be displeased with this item's cutting performance
I'd read where other users cut into their saw's shoe, rendering it inoperable? I didn't quite understand this, but what I presume is that with the right blade and with a torqued angle approach during cutting, one could easily bite into the shoe. The shoe's protrusion length is adjustable, to expose unused cutting portions of the blade, which I suspect is common to most recip saws, so I understood that it'd be asy to damage the shoe, but implied in some of the other posts is that there is some sort of design flaw unique to this saw that makes such a failure inevitable.
I'm going to have to keep using this saw to better understand this gripe, but for now the saw seems to be smartly designed and a powerful addition to my power tool line up. I probably could have dropped down to a different Makita model recip appropriate to my light duty needs, but overkill is just more fun, right?

The trigger works perfect but can be designed better, I prefer a bigger triangle style trigger
As a side node Makita dealers network hate Amazon and don't give you 3 year warranty, but this tool not going to need it I think.
