Product Description
Marmite was conceived in 1902 and the Marmite Food Company opened a small factory in Burton-on-Trent where it still resides today. It took a couple of years to perfect the recipe and for the British public to warm to the spread's distinctive taste. Before Louis Pasteur realized that the cells in yeast were in fact living plants, people simply discarded this by-product of the brewing process. German scientist Liebig then went on to make yeast into a concentrated food product - one that resembled meat extract but was in fact vegetarian. Following the discovery of vitamins in 1912, yeast was found to be a great source of five important 'B' vitamins. As a result Marmite was included in soldiers' ration packs during World War I. It became a dietary supplement in prisoner-of-war camps in World War II and was sent to British peacekeeping forces in Kosovo to boost morale in 1999. Today Marmite is a nutritious, black, tasty, savory spread enjoyable on toast or bread or even as a cooking ingredient. It is made from spent brewer’s yeast and comes in a distinctive black jar with a yellow lid.

Definitely an acquired taste for some folks but I would have it every day if possible.
The glass is very thick and I don't think you really have to worried about it being broken during shipping unless someone is really tossing the heck out of those boxes.
I bought this because I have just recently returned to being vegan and heard about how people in the UK enjoy this and vegans like to partake in it because of the abundance of B vitamins. The slogan on the jar reads "Love it or Hate it" which is exactly what everyone would tell me when I ask about it and after trying it I can definitely see why they say this!
When the package arrived my boyfriend and I were very excited and made up some toast, put a serving of earth balance (it's a vegan butter alternative) and then put a light spread of Marmite over the top of it.
The smell is a pit strong. To me it smelt like miso paste, but my boyfriend said he couldn't place what the smell was like.
We were a bit hesitant biting into it and we could definitely tell where I put too much Marmite down in some spots as well as understand the slogan of "Love it or Hate it!" but it wasn't bad. As long as you use it as they say to, which is very lightly, it's very good! Salty, but good.
My boyfriend is a bit on the fence about it. He says it's one of those things were he can't tell if he actually loves it or hates it yet xD but it's interesting and he's glad he tried it.
I will definitely be using this in my vegan cooking to help with gravy or broth. I'm very glad I bought this product and I think it's really something you should be encouraged to try and maybe just keep handy in your kitchen.
When this jar runs out, I'm going to be sure to buy a second jar in a larger size.
I'm guessing the guy that invented this product had to dislike it initially but grew to enjoy it. Maybe this is the flavor of your childhood or perhaps you can develop a love for it. I've decided to move on.
A lot of the time it depends how you try Marmite. People spread it too thickly on toast and then gag. You’ve got to do it in incredibly tiny line 1mm thick scant ribbons across hot buttery toast. if you’d like that, you can work your way up from there. it’s great on any neutral veggies like cauliflower or baked potato but GO EASY with this stuff it’s potent. The less you use the better- and then the more often you want to add it to foods. It also really revs up the flavor of stirfry’s and other dishes but start with a 1/2 teaspoon Or less. And never eat it off the spoon it’s not Nutella. * Enjoy *

Whilst I am drooling and enjoying this at work, most were dry-heaving lol. Good, more for me.
It goes well when combined with peanut butter on toast too or with cheese spread on crackers!
Now here's the thing. Since Covid 19 struck I have not been able to purchase marmite in any of the local supermarkets.
The manager of one chain did a request for me and was unable to locate the product at any of its stores in Western Canada(something about a shortage of yeast). So my only option and maybe yours too is to import it from England which I have done once at triple the regular price which is normally around $6-7.
Bovril is similar to Marmite in flavour( if a little runnier in consistency)and it is available at my local store at a cost of $6-7 so this will be my solution until Marmite is back on the shelves.
