I believe that these eggs are indeed pasture-raised. A while ago, I happened to be finishing up a package of organic eggs from Costco and starting a carton of Vital Farms eggs. Side-by-side in the pan, the difference in color was startlingly obvious!I used to raise my own backyard chickens, who ran around grazing / eating insect and grubs all day, and their eggs looked like the VF ones - bright, bright orange yolks!
These eggs are OUTSTANDING for flavor, and once you try them, you'll be spoiled against ever having the cheapest eggs in the case ever again. (These eggs are a bit pricey, however, so I usually stock up when they're on sale.)
As consumers, it's important for us to speak with the money we spend; demand for products created a certain way will drive production and eventually lower prices.
The industrial food supply chain that provides us with super-cheap eggs also doesn't treat its chickens well - the chickens are barely treated as living beings - which is why the cheap eggs are watery and pale, and don't taste like much.
For me, it is REALLY important to support meat/egg farmers who get "certified humane" on their product. Animals that are allowed to be animals - not crated up for their whole lives - live better lives, and it's reflected in the flavor of their meat and eggs. Nowhere is it more readily or easily identifiable than eggs: crack a 79 cent/dozen egg next to one of these eggs, and you'll immediately see what I mean: these have a nice solid egg white, and a vibrantly orange-yellow yolk. Additionally, studies have proven that pasture-raised eggs are healthier than industrial eggs. Win-win all around!
And the flavor! I've converted people who say they're not into eggs by serving them these. And if these eggs taste amazing on their own, then they also add great flavor to egg dishes (quiche, etc).
They're more expensive, but they're worth it: flavor, appearance, environmentally, and most of all, for the quality of life of the chickens who provide these eggs.
My wife is a vegetarian so eggs represent a large part of her dietary protein. She is also a supporter of ethical treatment for animals (the main reason she has given up eating meat). Her research shows that this producer treats the hens as well or better that other chicken farms ... and their feed and their environment support organic production. The eggs are fresh tasting. The packaging is compostable. The price reflects the quality. My wife eats a lot of them and she won't buy any other brand.
Where do I start? I love the hen of the month in each package. I am willing to spend extra to support this company and their ethical raising and care of hens. In addition, the product quality is amazing. The yolks are bright orange, and the taste is amazing!
