About Us

Dr. Martens’ appeal to people who have their own individual style but share a united spirit – authentic characters who stand for something. People who possess a proud sense of self- expression. People who are different.

On a stylistic level, Dr. Martens simple silhouettes allows their wearers to adopt the boots and shoes as part of their own individual and very distinctive style; on a practical level, their famous durability and comfort make them ideal for the unforgiving world of gigs and street fashion; and then finally on an emotional level, they are a badge of attitude and empowerment. However, it wasn’t always this way: Dr. Martens were originally a modest work-wear boot that was even sold as a gardening shoe at one stage.

Product Description

The Rometty is based on our traditional 2976 pattern with a thick, platform sole to take this style to the next level. Accentuated heel and vamp pannels add a contemporary feel to a well-known style.

Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Love these! I photographed the new pair next to my 5 year old pair that I’m replacing. As you can see the sole definitely wore down over the years. I agree that the ankle is INCREDIBLY tight and that they are hard to get off — at first. The elastic starts to soften and you can easily slip them on and off. I think you can kind of see it in my older pair.Updating to add: I'm regularly a 7.5 US in women's shoes and the size 6 is perfect for me here.I have worn the old ones hiking for 9 miles a day in the city and out to dinner with a dress. They are versatile and cool. Stick with it and wear with thick socks at home if you don’t have someone (or a boot pull thingie) to help you get them off while you break them in.

Love, love, LOVE these boots! I've always wanted a pair and I'm happy with them now that I finally have them. Totally did not realize they were steel toe boots when I bought them (they were on sale for 30% off!) so that was a nice bonus to discover when I tried them on the first time. They're snug around the ankle, easy to get on and off, stylish and sturdy, AND I get an extra three inches of height too! Two complaints. First is that the fit is a little loose (I'm a size 7 and ordered a size 7), but wearing a pair of thick socks, or two pairs of thin socks, makes them fit perfectly. Not a big deal considering they're my fall/winter boots for work, and I intended on wearing thick socks with them anyway. Second, the elastic on the outside of the right boot is already starting to fray :( I didn't realize that that was "a thing" common to the Chelsea boots after Doc Marten switched manufacturers, so to say I'm bummed is a bit of an understatement. I bought them in September 2022 and it's now the beginning of November 2022, so it only took about 2 months of consistent wear for the fraying to start.

As always, I thoroughly read dozens of reviews to make an informed decision on these boots. I decided to go for it, and I want to give a bit of advice so you won’t end up with painful blisters, and cuts like I saw on some poor person’s ankles here.

As far as the sizing goes, I normally wear a 7.5 regular or wide depending on the brand (love the lack of consistent sizing for most clothing and shoes, yuck). Based on what I read, size 7 would fit best. No toe pinching at all, they are literally perfect. The top of my foot felt a little snug for a couple of days, but they loosened up just a little and now they’ve molded to my feet.

These are challenging to pull on for about 7 days. I noticed marked improvement on day 3, but still tough. I had to WORK my feet into these the first time. I want to say it took me almost 15 minutes to get them on. If you’re like me and can’t make your foot flex like a ballerina, there is hope, it just takes patience, and extra time getting dressed so you’re not late from fighting to get your boots on. 3 weeks in, and I can get them on in 2 minutes or better.

Let’s talk socks. You will need some thick socks, I went with Hanes extra cushion crew socks. I made the mistake of using ankle socks that were maybe half an inch too short, so my shins got bruised AF from the boots rubbing and pressing against them. Once I got my new socks, I folded them down over themselves so I’d have easily 2 inches of sock above boot, and extra padding from the punishing top of the boot.

Not once did my actual feet hurt from wearing, it was just the shins. I don’t have to fold my socks down any longer, as they’re pretty much broken in after 3 weeks. Thicker socks feel great with these, I’ve been wearing them to work everyday and my other work shoes are dead to me. RIP Skechers ✌🏻

Ok so these reviews struck me as a little much, because come on, docs take a while to love you back. Then, they arrived. The reviews are soft-peddling the experience. These are elite. Theyre chonky but not heavy, and the proportions are elegant af. Leather is buttery. I normally wear a 9, and got these in 9 despite the size-down reviews. Lengthwise they were perfect but I had room width/heightwise, so added shearling insoles. Now they feel like puffy, bouncy slippers. Hand to god I'm gonna have these things' babies. BUY THEM NOW

they’re super cute! i bought them for work, as i needed non-slips. docs were originally created as a working boot so thought i’d gift myself some docs for my bday and have a pair of shoes for work! (i work as a barback) they take a goooood minute to build up your tolerance for these shoes. docs usually take a while to break in so wasn’t expecting them to be comfortable right off the bat. however, after having worked in them for several 8-9 hour shifts AND walking in them everyday for classes, i thought for sure they’d be broken in! i crumbled- my feet felt like they were going to crack open, so i bought some basic insoles and now they’re amazing! i love wearing them and my feet don’t hurt! size wise, i’d say they run a little bigger. i’m a 6 1/2 and bought a size 6. definitely a bit roomy but not too bad, especially with socks on (thinner or thicker) + the insoles. if you want a more roomy fit, it’s somewhat true to size. i’m not sure if i would have gone down to a 5 though. (the ankle can be a bit snug and difficult to remove, so i don’t think i would’ve been able to remove them without injuring myself lol) i love them though! the tread does wear out more quickly than i thought, and they are a bit heavier than normal shoes so be careful to not drag your feet!

I waffled between this one and the regular height 2976. Love the look of the extra height on these though. Looks badass. And can’t beat the sale price! Just hope they last longer than my previous chelseas. They are a little heavier but that’s not a problem for me. I put in an insole as I usually do for boots and they’re so comfy. Go for it!

These boots are PERFECT! As expected from the other reviews they do run a size large. I’m a 7.5-8 and bought a 7 and they fit perfectly with a bit of room for thick socks. The leather was stiff when they first arrived, but they took no more than ~3 days of walking around to get comfortable in.

DO NOT WALK FOR LONG DISTANCES THE FIRST FEW TIMES YOU WEAR THEM! I walked for about 30 minutes total to my gym and back home and I got a blister on my toe lol. I also suggest wearing slightly higher socks your first few wears, as they’ll rub on your ankles quite a bit. Now I’ve worn them for about a week and they’re totally comfortable. 5/5 product, I’m sure they’ll last me for ages.
