Product Description
Building on JBL legacy of high-quality sound performance, the 3 series Mk II represents an upgrade of the impressive LSR3 series. These compact, professional quality, powered studio monitors retain the LSR3 series' image control waveguide for incredible detail and imaging, and the broad sweet spot that means you get optimal sound even off-axis. The Mk II series now features updated high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) transducers, which respectively provide optimized damping for superior transient response and greater linearity that allows impressively deep bass with lower harmonic distortion. Upgrades also include new boundary equalization (EQ), which restores neutral LF response when speakers are placed on the work surface and adjacent walls. Hear for yourself why JBL is legendary in sound performance and quality.

With 5" woofers, they are not the loudest monitors in the world, but do you really want them to be if you're listening in a bedroom/basement studio? They are more than powerful enough for mixing in that sort of environment. And I was very impressed by the amount of clear low end they put out. I do not have a subwoofer connected to my setup, and I don't feel the need to do so. These puppies give me all the bass that I need.
Since I use my computer for my day job in addition to making music, I listen to tunes on these monitors all day long. It's a great way to tune my ears to the speakers, so that when it comes time to do my own mixes, my point of reference is what all my favorite albums sound like on these same monitors. And BONUS: it's a real treat for my ears to hear all my favorite music in such clarity!
Are there better monitors out there? Probably, for a lot more money. But for the modest price, these monitors deliver fantastic performance. For a home studio, they are an excellent value.
To begin, the speakers do have a minor hiss when you turn your ear directly to a speaker 1 ft away or closer. I have these on my desk 2.5 feet from my head and I do not hear any hissing with volume on 10.
It took me awhile to get these speakers setup in a way that they would not make noise when there was a lot of movement on the screen/scrolling. The speakers would play music files great, but when I tried to view a movie or video game, there would be an audible buzz ranging from barely heard to straight moderately loud buzz with no sound from the media. Initially my setup was to take the Line out on my motherboard to the XLR bays via a 3.5mm 1/8 Inch TRS to 2 XLR Cable, Male to Male Aux to Dual XLR Breakout Cable. Others suggested that on here and if that worked for you, fantastic. For those that it won't work for, keep reading. Here's what I did to resolve the buzz. In my case, this was being caused by electrical interference (dirty energy) that was being created by my computer / PC. I used an optical cable from my motherboard to a $20 DAC. I then used the 3.5mm off the headphone jack on the DAC and connected it to the XLR bays on the back of the 305p's (using the 3.5mm 1/8 Inch TRS to 2 XLR Cable, Male to Male Aux to Dual XLR Breakout Cable).
Another method I used to try to resolve the issue was plugging the speakers in a different outlet from my PC, but that didn't resolve anything.
I ordered these after serious research, and am blown away. The clarity of sound is astounding. I feel like the piano or violin or guitar is being played right next to me. I keep them permanently on 7 volume, adjust with computer, madcapped volume totally sufficient for my computer, and obviously much bigger and more powerful than most smaller 2.1 sets. Without a sub, that thump for some rap gone, but this is not a product deficiency, I'm going to pony up for sub now that know these are awesome.
I noticed a significant, massively, improvement in sound quality placing them on stands. I bought the IsoAcoustics ISO-L8R155. Insanely overpriced, the stands, but didn't see any other options I liked. Don't even think of buying these without stands. The difference is astounding.
I was really on the fence about shelling out about $275 for two speakers, by the time you pay tax and shipping. I got the Logitech $40 used on Craigslist. These were worth every penny, and would be even if they cost $100 more. The clarity and purity of the sound is almost impossible to overstate, versus even really good computer speakers. These speakers actually made me go back and listen to tons of music hadn't heard in awhile just to appreciate the richness of voices and instruments.
One final note, I had a buddy in college decades ago who had JBLs blow on him, and they replaced them. That stuck out in my mind all these years later, when Klipsch unfortunately began cutting corners and selling inferior products. The tech guy at JBL Pro was super knowledgeable, and I feel like that factored into the decision a bit.
Do not hesitate to buy these for computer use. They are worth every freaking penny and you will not regret the decision. You'll find room on even a small desk, and be happy you did, LOL. I might have gotten the 6" speakers, as they don't cost much more, If I had it to do over again, and will probably get the 8" for my home.
Just to beat it to death, the clarity of the sound, the purity, the truth of it, is almost impossible to overstate. I am listening to John Denver, after Bruno Marrs, after Mariah Carey, after Benzino and NWA, and simply can't ever go back to cr$ppy 2.1 sets after just a few days of these.

Pros:
1. Fairly flat and clear. You'll hear things you've never heard in music before
2. They have a nice deep low end for a 5" Monitor
3. Great sturdy build quality
4. From what I can tell, the best warranty for most in this range of monitors
5. Just overall, a very fun Monitor to listen to music
Cons:
1. I'm not a huge fan of the shiny front on these MKII series
2. A fairly annoying hiss. If you turn the input nob down on back, it is mitigated. Good cables also helped a lot. So overall, not a deal breaker, but it is there.
3. While I feel the low end is nice, it is a bit loose causing it to be slightly inaccurate in my opinion
4. These are fun to listen to, but because of that, I do think they have a bit of coloration to them
5. They are rear ported. Not necessarily a bad thing, but something to think about in a small room
Overall, I would certainly recommend these. They would make my top 5 for sure.
