I like the techniques taught in this book. I've found that knowing scales in systems like the CAGED system and even using scales in Modes doesn't give you enough to go-on to create interesting solos. The techniques learned this book give the player an abundant arsenal of guitar savvy to make a simple pentatonic run sound so much richer than just running a scale. I'm impressed with how Simon builds a players skill set by adding new techniques with short licks used to demo each of them. He goes on to give the player insight on how to build your own solos which are inspired by the melodic line of the song.

Greater than 90% of the text is based on the Pentatonic scale. I'm hoping that he writes a book that deals with licks and solos based on the 7 note scales (Major and Minor) and chords like 7th, Minor, M7, 6th, 9th, Major and Major 7th, skipping the Exotic scales of India, Japan and others.

If you want to learn to play lead guitar or just play solos, this is a GREAT Book to work through. I've learned a lot!

This is a great book with high quality audio files. I learned new techniques that I never understood through my guitar teacher. I saw improvements in my ability to understand rhythm, move around the fret board more fluidly, and read tab more accurately. Listening to & playing along with the audio files really accelerated my playing. Each chapter teaches you licks & solos using various scales...so basically you wind up memorizing these scales over time without having to try too hard. The beauty of a book like this is that you can go at your own pace in the comfort of your own home....& revisit whenever you need. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for that little extra to help improve their soloing.

There are a lot of guitar books that teach theory, technique, or a certain style, but this is one of the few I've come across that focuses on improving your overall musicality. It's not tied to any particular style or skill level. It's more about the little nuances that make your leads sound more polished and compositional techniques to give your solos a sense of direction. It's easy to read and not overly technical. Some parts, like the final example solo, will require some chops but there aren't any super-ninja-impossible licks here.

In general, I'd recommend this for an advanced beginner or intermediate, or any player who feels that they sound too bland or mechanical. Don't pick this up as your first lead guitar book, get something that teaches the raw basics. Then pick this up to put on the finishing touches.

For any fans of David Gilmour, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix or indeed any rock players looking to improve your soloing this book will do it.

I have noticed improvement in both my technique and improvisational skills already. The book starts out with core soloing techniques like slides, bends, and legato and gives an in depth guide to maximising these techniques. I have been working on string skipped slides and they have added a new sound into my solos.

I particularly like the chapter on building a solo from a melody. Starting off from a simple melody and then moving that melody all over the neck and adding linking licks is extremely clever and has made me realise that writing memorable solos should always revolve around a melodic theme.

Also the 5 full backing tracks and mini backing tracks and well recorded audio are very useful.
