Soldier - The Spartacus Rebellion Book I Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 116 ratings

From the author of the highly-rated Last Pharaoh series on Cleopatra comes a gritty and captivating tale of survival, hope, vengeance, and honor, in this first book of the Spartacus Rebellion trilogy of novels depicting the famous Third Servile War.

(update: squashed many evil editorial errors)

For Honor. For Vengeance. Or For Rome?

83 B.C. Thrace.

Spartacus, son of a Maedi chief, is about to lead a band of his men into the heart of an enemy tribe to steal the idol of their sacred god Sabazios. He hopes that this daring incursion will make him worthy in his father's eyes and the tribe that sees him more a philosopher than a warrior.

When this desecration brings savage retribution to his doorsteps, Spartacus does what no Maedi man would dream of doing, bringing dishonor to himself and his tribe. And now, the only way to douse the flames of shame and rage is by joining a Roman auxiliary that is preparing to destroy his enemy.

But the offended gods have different plans.

Fighting under a corrupt centurion, saddled with quarreling companions, and on a brutal march to wage war for a brilliant general with grand ambitions, Spartacus will learn what it means to be a skilled soldier, a warrior, and above all, a leader, even as he battles powerful forces that are about to put him on a bloody path to his fateful destiny.

All I will say is that I could not stop reading this! I burned through it quickly and plan to read the others. The story is enthralling and consistently kept me hooked.

The story is well developed and well told. The protagonist, whom to our bleeding American hearts was never treated fairly, and so was completely justified in his actions. The antagonist (there are several) so evil, unlikable, diabolical, antisocial, sociopathic and just down right despicable, without a single redeeming quality deserved every bad turn that came their way and would have deserved ten times worse. The problem is I don't think there actually was a TRUE protagonist in the real life person of Spartacus. So, who was the antagonist? That without question was the Editor or 3rd grade student responsible for "editing" this book. For the first hundred pages or so I made no less than two corrections a page, (a page being the 3×7 inch screen on my phone) and those were just the mistakes I noticed (you've surely noticed I'm no editor). Then it occurred to me that I PAID to READ this book NOT EDIT IT! I know the on-line book market has changed publishing drastically but it is still not appropriate to use the reader (or a 3rd grade student) to edit a book. I can not tell you how much the desire to fix the mistakes takes away from the enjoyment of an otherwise good read. It becomes stress inducing not relieving as it should be. So, if you read because you need to CHILL THE **** OUT don't read this! However, if you are one of those people who can relax while chaos reigns supreme around you...then thank Zeus for it and enjoy the story.

Adds perspective to a to the Hollywood movie with Kirk Douglas. Although the description bares a faint resemblance to him. Downloading book 2 now.

Jay Penner is a great writer, and this first book in his Spartacus trilogy really gets the reading mind immersed and anticipating a great trilogy once it's all complete.

I am thoroughly enjoying this take on Spartacus and eventually the third servile war. As I said a lot of history is unknown or has been lost/destroyed so it leaves room for a lot of creative freedom. It started out a bit confusing but I think that was me getting used to Penners writing style. (I had just finished reading the Iliad lol). There were also a few editing errors but nothing too glaring. I loved the progression of the story up until part two, which is not even a third of the book.( It’s very short, compared to part 1). It was really the transition to the ending that I didn’t care for, not the entirety of part two. The transition just seemed a bit abrupt but the ending itself was fine. Male character depictions were good and consistent, female character depiction( which weren’t many) made me role my eyes lol. However I’ve been noticing poor/less than female character portrayals with a few of the male authors I’ve been reading, so I took it with a grain of salt. (This is technically a bloody, gory, war novel so I recognize female characters may not necessarily be top priority. That being said, if you’re going to have them and attempt to make them significant, then more development/effort is going to be needed. If not, just leave them as a background character. Thats also fine. No need to force something that’s not really necessary.)
