Odyssey Thunder Marine Dual Purpose Battery
This battery model comes with the Separate Spacer for Group 34 Batteries.
Like an athlete that is both a sprinter and a long distance runner, the ODYSSEY Marine Dual Purpose battery has both massive starting power and amazing deep cycling capability – up to 400 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. With twice the overall power and three times the life of conventional marine batteries, the ODYSSEY battery is ideal for trolling, starting, and for powering the many on-board electronic accessories common in today’s boats and recreational vehicles.
Product Description
ODYSSEY Batteries TROLLING Thunder Marine Dual Purpose Battery (Marine Dual Terminal SAE Auto Post and Studs) has both massive starting power and amazing deep cycling capability, up to 400 cycles at 80 percentage depth of discharge. With 2 times the overall power and 3 times the life of conventional marine batteries, the ODYSSEY battery is ideal for TROLLING, starting and for powering the many on-board electronic accessories common in boats and recreational vehicles. When it comes to replacing a marine battery, boat owners have traditionally had two choices, starting or deep cycle. Often this means a compromise because most boaters want both, a marine battery that delivers robust starting power when they need it, yet also withstands deep and frequent depths of discharge without significant power loss. Unfortunately, no single battery could provide both until now. The amazing deep cycling capacity of the legendary TROLLING Thunder Battery along with massive cranking power is all in one revolutionary battery. Its construction consists of pure virgin lead plates for maximum surface area and optimized recycling, AGM design that eliminates acid spills, high conductivity, corrosion-resistant tin-plated brass terminals, high integrity terminal seal, a sealed design resulting in gases recycled internally, a self-regulating relief valve, tough flame retardant cell containers and robust internal cell connections to prevent vibration damage. Compared to spiral-wound batteries of equal size, ODYSSEY batteries pack 15 percentage more plate surface area into the case. Avoiding the dead space between cylinders in six-pack designs means ODYSSEY batteries deliver more power and 40 percentage more reserve capacity.

When this battery arrived, the first thing I noticed is the label is different from what is shown in the Amazon Ad. It appears to be the same battery though, based on the model numbers (First picture). I thought I would receive a battery labeled “Trolling Thunder,” but received the pictured one instead. I checked the voltage immediately after removing it from the box. A fully charged battery should have a voltage of 12.8, and mine was at 12.97 (Second picture). I put it on a Noco 10 amp automatic charger, which is shown, overnight to top it off, and this morning it shows a voltage of 13.17 after resting (Third picture). That’s exceptional for a 12 volt battery. I intend to keep this battery on an onboard Noco 4 Amp charger/maintainer, and hope to get many years from this battery.
The 4th picture is of another Odyssey battery in my old Corvette, which was installed 4 years 7 months ago. It is also an Extreme Odyssey battery of the same size, but it is not a marine version. I keep this battery on a simple battery maintainer, which is a Battery Tender Plus. This maintainer is a 1.25 amp model, and is shown in the 5th picture. The float charge shown in picture 4 is 13.41 volts. The battery calls for a float charge of greater than 13.5 volts, but I think 13.41 is close enough, so there is no need for a fancier battery maintainer for these Odyssey batteries. The car always fires up easily, even with a high horsepower v8.
Picture 6 is the now-dead battery being replaced in the boat. You can see the date I wrote on it when I bought it. 3/13/19. It failed hugely, but it was probably my own fault. The battery was over discharged at least 3 times. AGM batteries don’t like being over discharged. The resting voltage is now 8 volts. I can charge it, but after removing it from a modern automatic charger, the volts drop from 12.8 to 10 volts in 8 hours. So it’s junk....thankfully it was replaced under warranty, and the replacement will go in my Jeep. The Jeep doesn’t have any huge current draws when the engine is off, so the replacement Red Top Optima is a good choice for that kind of vehicle. I can’t recall why I chose the Red Top Optima for my boat originally, but because it died an early death, my choice at that time was obviously very poor. My guess about the bulk of the poor reviews on batteries is that the buyers didn’t charge them correctly, maintain them correctly, or abused the batteries like I did.
Buy more battery than you think you need! Don’t cheap out on a marine battery. Buy the correct style of battery, and maintain it! Don’t abuse it like I did to my Optima! Don’t expect to be rescued by someone who is better prepared than you! Get home safely!

A battery is nothing but a plastic bucket of lead, acid, and electrons -- take away the electrons and you will soon have a bucket of lead sulfate. In my opinion, the spiral wound Optima AGM design is less tolerant of a low electron day than the Odyssey, or perhaps the design is good, but manufacturing is trickier. In other words, the Odyssey design and manufacturing are more predictable, as is evident from the longer warranty terms.
Also, I like going to measure a voltage and see 12.84V, not 12.3 or something -- that is what I like about Odysseys.
I have this installed in our 2010 Sea Doo Challenger 210 and couldn't be happier. I really like the idea of a dual purpose battery. In my case I don't think its necessary for a dual battery system and this is a GREAT alternative. As of right now the longest I have had the stereo running on this battery without the engines was a little over 2 hours. I was able to start both my engines with out missing a beat still strong and very willing to turn the engines over without hesitation.

My buddy and I did a side by side comparison, both with 16' Skiff and 55lb iPilot Trolling motors.
After a solid 8 hour day of fishing, his brand new Duracell AGM battery was dead. My Odyssey was still going strong with more than 50% power left.
