Review
"My Time with Papa by Shauntae Spaulding is a heartwarming children's picture book that tells the story of a little girl whose father has passed away. Her mother is there to support her as she grieves and helps her understand her heartache. Her mother tells her not to think of it negatively, to remember all the fun times she had with her dad. Thus begins the story as the girl closes her eyes and she and her father are reunited in her imagination.
Shauntae Spaulding navigates the devastating topic of loss while being respectful. Spaulding's tone throughout the story helps keep the mood happy, which I am supremely grateful for, because as soon as I found out what this book was about my heart ached and I wasn't sure I was ready for such despair. But this is an ultimately uplifting story that will remind children that our loved ones leave their memories behind. It teaches them to stay optimistic and hold onto those good memories. The use of rhyme and vivid artwork keep the reader engaged and eager to continue. The art is exceptional and seemed to me like it was ready to be made into an animated story.
My Time with Papa is touching and thought-provoking and gives children a unique tool to deal with grief and loss and Shauntae Spaulding has managed to do this in a fun and imaginative way." - Literary Titan

I must confess, I was initially stumped about how to write a review for a book which deals with such a difficult subject from the eyes of a child. It is hard enough trying to explain when a loved one passes, let alone write a book to help a child come to terms with their grief, yet, Shauntae manages to do this with an effortlessness of style and compassion as to take you on a journey through the grieving process in a way you feel shielded by an aura of tenderness and caring and when you emerge from the tunnel, feel elevated and enlightened both spiritually and physically.
The gorgeously structured verses in Shauntae’s book nicely complement the first dark and then lighter toned illustrations creating a synergy of emotions which amplify further the strength of feeling and give the book its own unique aura – one of stark contrast between the dark depths of despair and then like an aeroplane with wings, the soaring realisation the love we share will always be there, as it was then, so it is now and so it will be forever. Again, I am brought back to a theme in poetry I mentioned a week or two ago in a review: grief is the price we pay for love but it is a price we all pay willingly because it is what makes us human.
Reading the reader reviews I can tell straight off this book has an important place in the society we share. An ideal form of therapeutic story reading for helping young children and others cope with the passing of a loved one, “Time with papa” will continue to aid us through the grieving process for a long time to come. If you or a friend have children going through a similar experience, then this book is for you.
