Purchase options and add-ons

Now more than ever, we live in a society where we covet new and shiny things. Not only has consumption risen dramatically over the last 60 years, but we are damaging the environment at the same time. That is why buying quality and why Tara Button’s Buy Me Once brand has such popular appeal.
Tara Button has become a champion of a lifestyle called ‘mindful curation’ – a way of living in which we carefully choose each object in our lives, making sure we have the best, most classic, most pleasing and longest lasting – kettles, desks, pots & pans, scissors, coats and dresses, instead of surrounding ourselves with throwaway stuff and appliances with built-in obsolescence. Tara advocates a life that celebrates what lasts, what is classic and what really suits a person.

There are 10 steps to master mindful curation and each is explained in this book, from understanding and using techniques to freeing yourself from external manipulations. Finding your purpose and priorities and identifying your core tastes and style. Learning how to let go of the superfluous and how to make wise choices going forwards.

Mindful curation is a lifestyle choice that will make you happier, healthier and more fulfilled spiritual as well as helping save the planet.

Tara Button is a Bestselling Author and the Founder and CEO of BuyMeOnce a movement which finds the longest lasting products on the planet and campaigns to change the way the world shops forever.

Once a cluttered, shopaholic herself, Tara turned her life around through building BuyMeOnce in her spare time and discovering the surprising benefits of buying for the long term.

When her BuyMeOnce business idea went viral in 2016 and Tara quit her job to pursue her mission of persuading the world to throw away its throwaway culture and love things that last.

Tara is an exceptional mix of consumer champion, environmentalist and lifestyle expert. Her ethos includes buying sustainably, ethically and bringing products into your life for the long term.

There was a bidding war for her first book A Life Less Throwaway which lays out her full philosophy, with practical steps on how to follow it. The book has already been an Amazon Bestseller and will be available internationally from 2018.

Honestly, this book puts Marie Kondo to the curb! I can’t believe there aren’t more reviews. This is one of those books that I highlighted and dog eared pages so I could easily go back and find the key points that resonated with me. It really makes you think about what you’re buying. Stop shopping to fill a void and make a concerted effort to only buy items you need and use and make sure they’re quality items to last a lifetime. It makes your soul feel good. Think of your grandparents, who probably still use kitchen utensils or pots that they have had for decades! They didn’t buy a new couch every five years bc they wanted to keep up with trends or color schemes. They bought something and used it until it didn’t function anymore. It’s so simple. And it makes you feel good every time you use an item that is well made and cost you a little more. I get happy to pull out my CorningWare dish when cooking because it’s special, unlike the cheap set of dishes I had previously only bc they were on sale. I loved everything about this book EXCEPT THE LAST CHAPTER!! After such a great book with a central focus of buying quality items made to last, the author throws in a rant about global warming. Really?! Keep your “opinions” to yourself regarding political issues. That final point really devalued the book for me as a whole. Either leave that out completely or change the title and incorporate it throughout. I felt like someone I trusted just snuck up behind me and hit me in the head unexpectedly. Therefore, 4 stars.

I really liked this book. A lot of great ideas and lots to think about in the future. I’ve been gravitating towards minimilizing and thinking more about having less but better things where it matters.

Good book to read. Teaches people not to spend there money on things or products just because it makes us happy. In the end we are left with nothing but debt and feeling depressed and wanting more. This book teaches you methods on how not to become a shopaholic and de-clutter your life and make good use of what you have already.

Was there research done for this book? Yes. Was it quality research (meaning: research done by someone with an understanding of how to do research that leads to a factual, deep understanding of the complexities), no. Was this book written by a professional writer? No. Thus, it reads like a compendium of social media posts of a layperson in their late twenties who is excited to live a principled life, has spent more time than most of her peers learning how to do that, and wants to help her friends do the same. I'm sure that's valuable to her like-minded friends. But the bar is higher for a book. For example, in the chapter on Marketing, the author recounts her three year old niece's ability to memorize the script of a "mold and mildew spray" commercial. The author goes on to say, "Does this matter? I would argue it mainly depends on the content of the commercials." The phrase "I would argue" is coffee shop vernacular for an unsubstantiated opinion. Perhaps a more compelling demonstration of the author's well intentioned but not-for-me tone is this excerpt discussing whether advertising should be banned (interesting idea with a *lot* of complexity), "[Advertising is] often useful in telling us about things we might not otherwise have known about and services that are available to us. Plus, sometimes there are puppies involved!" Um...check please.

Reminds us to value experiences over things and not to consume just for the sake of it. Explained the importance of buying the very best you can afford in an effort to have products last longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only read one decluttering book...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 8, 2019
I've read a few of these now, Marie Kondo, The Minimalists, and listened to a lot of podcasts, but I think Tara Button outdoes them all. Yes, there is still some stating the obvious, because a lot of this stuff is common sense - for example, did you know the best way to do credit cards is to only have one for emergencies and pay it off in full every month - where have I read that before?! What Tara does is cover everything the others do, but also adds the environmental element, and some positive psychology. She spends time on the "what do I do with my life after I have decluttered?", reminds you about the psychology of advertising and sales, and points you to some really interesting further resources. I loved the section about fast fashion and it's impact. I'm already doing some of the things the book recommends, and I know I will be returning to it again and again. Now, to resist buying any more books which regurgitate the same message! Don't worry, Tara has told me how...

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE the message of this book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 14, 2018
I was particularly interested in the authors experience in the advertising world and her insight into how advertisers research and manipulate customers into buying things they don't need, something I think we all need to be aware of especially in the age of social media where we are even more bombarded in ever more subtle ways. I LOVE the message of this book, to buy less, buy well, and through this simple process automatically treat your belongings with more respect and care. I like that the author is honest about her own background and her struggles with consumerism, which gives the book a personal and confiding feel as opposed to a preachy one. I may not take up all the advice in the book, but having read it, it has given me a greater awareness and I shall certainly shop differently from now on, for myself and for others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes you think ....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2019
So many purchases are made without thought or research, this book asks you to put the brakes on impulse buying and shopping as a "hobby". A book worth reading. Exercises are included in the book to help you focus on your needs and forces you to confront the frequent question we ask of ourselves "do I really need this?" After reading this book you may decide to say "no" more often, which is a good thing for the planet.
