The Stolen Twins: Based on a true story, an utterly heartbreaking World War Two page-turner Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,276 ratings

Auschwitz, 1944: “You can’t leave me,” I whisper, my hand trembling as I reach for her cheek. “You can’t. We’re in this life together, always, just you and me.” This utterly heartbreaking yet beautifully hopeful World War Two page-turner tells the story of identical twin sisters in Auschwitz. Born minutes apart, Arina and Nora have never left each other’s side—until now…

The cattle car is dark, except for the light filtering through the boarded windows. There are too many of us to count, crushed up against each other. The air is stuffy, carrying the scent of our terror—none of us know what awaits us when this train stops. I cling onto Mama’s hand and Nora, my twin sister, clutches Papa’s.

After what feels like forever, the train stops. We spill out of the carriage, the sun blinding us after being imprisoned in darkness for so long. There are people everywhere, soldiers separating children from their parents, husbands from wives.

We’re in some sort of queue, and a man in a dark-green SS uniform walks by, glancing at everyone he passes. “Twins, twins,” he shouts. My heart falls into the pit of my stomach.

“Right here,” says Mama, hesitation in her voice. “My daughters are twins.” My eyes widen, and Nora trembles. Papa tries to tell Mama to be quiet, but it’s too late.

The Nazi catches sight of us. “Twins,” he says again, pausing to inspect Nora and me. “Yes, you are, aren’t you? You two are going to come along with me.”

This unforgettable World War Two page-turner, perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Lucky Ones and The Midwife of Auschwitz, shows that, in the darkest of times, love can save your life…

Lovely depiction of survival & what it meant to a twin in Auschwitz

Lovely depiction of survival & what it meant to a twin in Auschwitz
Despite how long it took me to get through this novel, I can easily recommend it. Ryan eloquently captured so many intricate topics. With Nora’s character, she accurately portrayed the devastation of noticing how our own impairments can frustrate others. With Aline and Mrs. Vallentine’s characters, she illustrated the impossible reality that after the war, many did not want to face the raw truth of what had happened. With each of the twins and Elek, she depicted what it means to be an older teenaged orphan left to the care and control of others, yet only for a short while. Through characters such as Helena, Mitchell, and Dale, Ryan brought the kindness of humanity to life. It’s rare that you can find writing that can capture both the hope and hopelessness, as well as the joy and sorrow, of survival. If you have not yet read a book about the experiments conducted on twins within the borders of Auschwitz, please read this stellar historical fiction account.Quote: “From the first minute I had to face this inhumane cruelty, I knew I was standing in the center of a collapsing world.”Thank you Shari J. Ryan, Netgalley, and Bookouture for the chance to read & review this book.

A fascinating story of Jewish twin girls from Hungary. Once the Nazi’s came to their small town.
Their whole family was moved to the ghetto. From there they ended up in Auschwitz’s death camp. Where the people were gassed and then burned. Or they were worked to death. These camps were part of Hitler’s final solution for Jewish people in Europe. In the camp was a Dr.Mengles who performed terrible operations on many Jewish twins. Many died because of his surgeries. It was just fortunate that Nora survived a surgery done to her brain because she had a stutter while Arania her twin didn’t have a stutter. Nora did lose a leg. Both she and her twin survived the war. They were finally United in the United States after the war with their soulmates. Both became famous for their talent of singing and art. The author gives you in-depth view of the of the hospital ran by the mad scientist Mengles from someone that lived through it.
I would only wish that the author didn’t switch so frequently from the past to the present, from one twin to the other. I got confused once wondering which twin she was writing about and when! The story was a good story and a good read!

The only reason for giving this absorbing story only 4, is the broken timeline! Neither am I sure, that the story could be effectively told with a through timline. However, i found it difficult connecting previous chapters when you are switched from pre to postwar and from Chicago to France, Germany to Poland. Sometimes I even got confused between the twins!
But, for all that, this story based in fact, is a page turner! No sense in trying to read this before sleep. The dramatic turns and threshold of events will keep you engaged long past 'lights out' : never mind the detail of Dr. Mengele and his experiments. However, the horror is balanced by the sense of 'family', shared experience, the spirit of hope and thankfulness for even small things. Abilities to sing and draw may have rusted during imprisonment, but fresh appreciation of weather and nature and beauty, stir again creativity and reconnections help heal and build hope for a new future. A marvellous and inspiring read!!

This was my first book by this author and it will not be my last! A moving page-turner which brilliantly moves from WWII to a few years later so that you are exposed to some of the atrocities of Auschwitz, but then left to look at it through the eyes of those who survived it. The reader can’t help but be in awe of the resilience of the human spirit as it deals with anger, rage and heartache during its attempts to persevere. The fact that the our insights are granted to us from a set of twins makes the read all the more impactful and memorable.

Interesting premise, but didn't like that it kept jumping back and forth between the twins and between time periods/locations. This is chapter by chapter, so the focus is too brief to follow what is going on in sequence of events. Characters weren't that engaging, so not enough to keep reading (stopped after Ch 8).

Grab the tissues before you start reading. You are going to need them and you aren't going to want to stop reading to go get them. There is a lump in my throat just thinking about The Stolen Twins. I can't believe how much I learned from reading the book and then looking for more information. I want my money back for my minor in history at University. The professors failed me. The teachers failed me.

We need to stop glossing over the atrocities of World War 2 and what happened in the Nazi Death Camps. Shari J. Ryan has brought a human touch to the realities if war. She has inspired me to speak out and remind people that we should never forget. We can't forget. The victims deserve to be remembered and so much more.

Nora and Arina are twins. They are just what Dr Mengele is looking so he can continue what he refers to as research on twins. The story lets the reader know that there were many, many sets of twins that were experimented. The cruelty was beyond severe. However, We Only Had Each Other is an in-depth story of Nora and Arina's time in the Auschwitz concentration camp. The author uses the characters as a way to illustrate the suffering. I am ashamed to admit how clueless I was over many of the details before reading this story.

The author does a fantastic job of illustrating the struggles for survival for the girls under the care of Dr. Mengele. The reader is shown how a brave Kapo (prison worker) made all the difference. The reader is given a glimpse into the horrors perpetrated by the doctor.

The twins' struggles aren't over when the camp is liberated. Nora has been hiding. Her sister doesn't know if she is alive or dead. Nora is sent to France while Arina is sent to America. Their struggles are not over, they have changed. They are both in foreign lands. They both have issues with Nora's being severe. Their lives are forever changed.

With the help of others they prove the Nazis wrong. The Jewish people are the stronger people. Nora and Arina are determined to thrive and succeed. Get ready to cheer them on. The characters are an inspiration to others and the ending is exactly what they deserved.

Heart wrenching & heart warming! The torture and loss Arina & Nora went through at such a young age was truly heartbreaking to read. But how strong they remained and their bond was truly heartwarming! I will definitely be reading more from Shari J. Ryan

While we all know about the terrible experiments on Jews and of all ages during the Holocaust, this book describes the deeds of Dr. Mengele and his atrocious "science" on children - particularly twins.
Without revealing too many particulars, the details as described are eye-opening without being gory, and it leaves the reader with a clear understanding that this man was not a doctor but a mentally deranged sadist.
Despite this subject matter I did enjoy reading the book - the author's style is compelling and does not fall into the "hype" category, which I appreciated.
Worth reading a second time...

I read this book in one afternoon- could not put it down. So beautifully written about an incredibly poignant subject. Such an emotional story about Arina, Nora and Helena, and others like them and Elek who endured the senseless acts of treachery in the Nazi camps.
