I couldn't put this book down, and finished it in a day. If your are expecting "action packed" the first couple of chapters might seem boring, but they are short, and then it starts to really unfold. I was very surprised by the ending. As with the Bridget Hart series were I never guessed "who dunnit". That is usually not the case for me.. This writing couple are very good writers, in my opinion.

Then a surprise plot twist that will suck you right in and will keep you reading until the very end!

I enjoyed this book by the end although it was difficult to stay engaged in the beginning. A good story with more than one twist does keep you asking what’s next.

In both tone and style, this novel grabbed me from the first page and didn't release me until the end. An apparently devoted married couple has moved to a secluded cottage in the country and kept to themselves for seven years, not associating or revealing anything about themselves to the villagers. The husband commutes each week to London to work and returns each weekend. The wife leads a solitary life only venturing out for food and household supplies. She has been instructed by her husband not to communicate with anyone more than necessary and obeys him, reporting her daily activities to him each evening when he phones precisely at nine. One day a letter comes for the wife, which serves as the catalyst that causes her long buried memories to surface and ultimately turns her life upside down. As the novel progresses, the reader learns that something ominous occurred in a red room that caused a turning point in the couples' lives. It's worth the read to learn the resolution of this mystery. I highly recommend this novel. It's a quick and engrossing read. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is that a few loose ends were not tied up at the end which my legal mind objects to.

The book starts off kinda slow, but not uninteresting. But as I read farther the more the dread came over me that this was, in the end, just going to be yet another tiresome sermon on womyn's empowerment at the hands of the evil patriarchy or some other worn-out lefty pet. I almost put it down. Glad I didn't. It turned out much better than I expected and much better than I could have imagined. The ending is surprising and heart-rending but in an inspiring way and gives you a chance to see the good in all the varied characters. Well worth a read. Read the other M S Morris books also - the Bridget Hart and Tom Raven series are great.

I'm sorry to say I did not like this book. I found it rather boring and long winded and in fact quite dull. I gave up before half way after struggling with a lack of action and not finding anything interesting in the story

I enjoyed this book but I didn’t like the ending! I found myself almost desperate to get to the end to find out why Jane had no memory of her life before the move to Yorkshire but I felt that the ending was rushed almost and too simplistic- there’s no way that it could have really happened but I suppose it’s fiction! Well worth a read though
