Express your vision in intimate detail
An F/2.8 high-speed zoom made for full-frame mirrorless.
Packing cutting-edge technology into a compact body, Tamron has created a high-speed zoom lens specifically designed for mirrorless cameras: the 28–75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036). A great addition to the Sony E-mount, the A036 strikes a beautiful balance between vibrant image quality, superb bokeh, compact size and lighter weight. Specialized glass elements throughout control various aberrations and produce stable resolution across the entire zoom range. All the lens surface is treated with Tamron’s proprietary BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating, which dramatically reduces ghosting and flaring while preserving crisp image quality. The A036 also incorporates an all-new high-speed precision AF drive system with an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor unit that is remarkably quiet. all its full-frame beauty.
In addition to portraits, nature shots and street photography, the 0.19m Minimum Object Distance lets you enjoy new forms of photographic expression with close-up shooting at the wide-angle end. With Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating, this lens offers exceptional mobility and outdoor functionality. It is the only zoom you need to portray the world in all its full-frame beauty.
The A036 zoom is designed to maximize the potential of full-frame mirrorless cameras. Because it is designed to be your most frequently used high-speed zoom, we made it compact. Now you can enjoy advanced optical performance in a compact size with lightweight convenience. It weighs just 550g (19.4 oz) with a length of 117.8mm (4.6 in).
- Superb optical performance and beautiful background blur effects, provided by fast F/2.8 aperture.
- Comfortably light weight (19.4 oz.) and compact (4.6 in).
- Minimum Object Distance: 7.5" at wide-angle setting and 15.3" at the telephoto position.
- All-new 'RXD' stepping motor AF unit is extremely quiet and therefore perfect for video capture.
- Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating for weather protection.
Outstanding image quality meets delicate bokeh
The A036 zoom delivers a dazzling balance of clear yet soft rendering, stunning bokeh and exceptional resolution for in-focus areas. It also captures the finer details across the entire focus plane with performance that supports the latest high-resolution cameras—all while expressing the characteristic smoothness of a fast aperture lens. Stunning bokeh spreads gently from the plane of focus to highlight your subject. By stopping down the aperture, you can alter how images are rendered. The lens also incorporates a nine-bladed aperture that produces beautifully round defocused light points. And Tamron’s distinctive image characteristics, which produce more than just a different degree of blur with F-stop changes, add even more impact.
Superb AF keeps it sharp and quiet
The AF drive on the A036 includes an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor unit to help you stay focused on the action. RXD uses an actuator to precisely control the rotational angle of the motor, allowing it to directly drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear. A sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens enables high-speed and precise AF, which is ideal when shooting continually moving subjects or video. With a focusing system that is both smooth and quiet, the A036 lets you shoot a video without worrying about picking up ambient drive sounds.
Built with Mirrorless in Mind
Tamron’s new 28-75mm zoom is compatible with many of the advanced features that are specific to mirrorless cameras. This includes: - Fast Hybrid AF - Eye AF - Direct Manual Focus (DMF) - In-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion) - Camera-based lens unit firmware updates * Features vary by camera. Please consult your camera’s instruction manual for details. *As of March, 2018

Likes:
- excellent (fast and accurate) autofocus on par with native Sony lens (of which I’ve used several). Works great with continuous autofocus - my 3 year old has put it through its paces indoors.
- lightweight
- moisture resistant
- very good flare resistance (your images don’t get that annoying haze when you take pictures on sunny days facing the sun - and if they do it’s easily corrected in post).
- very good color rendition.
- very good out of camera contrast
- ridiculously sharp (especially in the center, quite sharp in the corners, great sharpness throughout range).
- one of the smaller zooms. Only the Sony Zeiss 24-70f4 is smaller.
- f2.8 constant aperture allows for nice headshots/portraits at 75mm and great light gathering at 28mm
- good bokeh
Dislikes
- a wee bit long. Not truly discrete.
- zoom ring is reversed from focus ring. Feels weird. But if this is your first lens, it won’t matter. And after a while of only using this lens, it doesn’t matter
Neutral
- build quality. I think it looks and feels nice. Nowhere near as nice as most Sony Zeiss lenses. Some pros don’t like the plasticky feel. But for my purposes (family photos indoor and outdoor, vacation/travel and just everyday life) it’s top notch.
Summary: Excellent all round lens for any amateur or enthusiast so long as you don’t need anything wider or longer.

The Tamron 28-75mm is easily one of the sharpest lenses available for the Sony in its category. As far as I can tell, it is only slightly softer than the over-$2000 Sony 24-70mm for less than $900, although in some cases I have seen it actually beating the Sony in sharpness. The Autofocus has been fixed through easily installed firmware and is now relatively fast. Not the fastest, but definitely not as slow as it was before, and may even be faster than the Sony as well.
The biggest fault to the lens would easily have to be its build quality; despite being a rather sturdy lens, the materials used fall short of equivalent Sony lenses, even the cheaper Sony 85mm f/1.8 which is built like a tank, is even sharper, and costs less, although it is a prime which makes it hard to really equate the two.
Easily recommended.
It's fast, lightweight, sharp and honestly is basically the Sony lens for way less cost. Its range is pretty perfect too, as long as you're not specializing in zoom shots or wide-angle shots. It's a great all-around lens. Bokeh is fantastic. Not a professional photographer but for my hobbyist needs, this is amazing.
I am so impressed with the quality of the all pics. I also take portraits and you can see the all of the details on a person skin and clothing. My friends at time ask me to loan them my lens while we are shooting models. They keep saying I need to buy this lens. I like the range that it gives me because I shoot cityscape, street photography and portraits and I can do it all with this lens. no more back pain from carrying multiple lenses and adapters.
This is a good investment. to see recent samples of pics taken with the Tamron 28-75mm just visit my instagrams pages below

But if you buy with Amazon.ca listed as seller. You can forget the manufacturers warranty. I have it in writing from Tamron Canada that you have to buy only from an authorized dealer to get the 6 year warranty. These are listed on their website. Luckily an alternate seller was listed on amazon.ca product page for same price (when I purchased anyway) and I registered with Tamron Canada for warranty once I received it.
Unfortunately Tamron Canada and Tamron USA don't co-operate it seems. If you try to register online for Tamron USA 6 year warranty on their site you need a US address.
