As it is, it's a solid piece of hardware. It plugs in and installs and scans all very easily. It actually pulled in more channels and with better reception than the TV by itself. Changing channels is quick, video quality and audio is excellent. A very cool product. Perhaps still not as fast and flexible as a Media Center TV set-up, but it works well. Also, you can stream video via smart glass to a cell phone / tablet / computer. It replays the same channel so you can actually watch something on two screens at the same time (but if you change the channel it changes on all platforms).
For Cord Cutters who don't have elaborate HTPC set-ups and don't want to buy an expensive stand alone this is a great little addition to the Xbox. It downloads the guide information, you can favorite channels, see what channels or shows are being watched, see recent tweets about a show right on the screen during the show and control it all from your smart phone.
As a bonus, you can also pair this up with the Xbox Smart Glass app, giving you the ability to stream TV to your tablet or phone, while another member of the household plays a game. In addition, the Smart Glass app provides a very good tv guide on your tablet or phone, which complements TV viewing via an Xbox One, greatly.
I get over 100 channels using this adapter & a separately purchased 50 mile, amplified, HD antenna. I will note that I live in Los Angeles, in a very urban area, close to most TV signals. If you combine this with Sling TV, also available on Xbox One, you can get a nice choice of TV channels, at very affordable prices, much cheaper than cable.
This adapter will simply make your OTA TV experience more enjoyable & satisfying, giving you a great & viable alternative to pay TV. The ability to pause, rewind & fast forward are great, as is the TV guide. This is a top notch product, which will be greatly appreciated by those looking to cut the cable cord.
Getting OTA TV with the Hauppauge tuner and Xbox is definitely an improvement over most of the HD tuner functionality I've experienced in the past - in-TV tuners, set-top boxes, etc. with a couple exceptions. The OneGuide is great. It is nicely organized, display much more program information than many others do, and being able to control with the SmartGlass apps is just gravy. You can view the guide and move around, browsing program details about upcoming shows etc., while the current show still plays in a PIP window. You can add favorites etc. Very nice looking for certain. One thing you *cannot* do however, which I find quite odd, is schedule future viewing. Nearly all of the digital tuner interfaces I've used in the past allow this, e.g. browsing ahead to an upcoming show on a given channel, and having the TV select it for viewing when it comes on, either changing the channel to it at that future time or giving you a notification that your scheduled show is now starting. OneGuide doesn't provide this. It should.
What XBox/OneGuide *does* do is provide about 30 minutes of live-TV pause/rewind functionality which is incredible for watching sports, or most anything else really. We have had friends come over to watch football at our place already just because of this. You essentially get your own "instant-replay" for those moments when someone is, inevitably, ("Oh no! What did I miss?! What happened?!") in the kitchen and misses the touchdown, or when the network doesn't bother to show a replay of that great catch while the commentators are waxing poetic about their past careers. You can do this as much and as often as you like, up to about 30 minutes, but I recommend not going over about 5-10 minutes max... This is the right amount of time to allow you to then fast-forward and skip through all or most of the next set of commercials, thus catching up with the live broadcast. Rinse. Repeat. Works great. And I do realize this isn't new technology per se -- cable and satellite DVRs and set-tops have had this for quite some time, but at a cost. This however is FREE on the XBox with over-the-air, full, uncompressed HD!
I had a couple of channel setup issues but eventually it pulled in all the channels I was receiving with my TV's tuner connected to the same antenna: I'm using my 10-year-old home-made UHF coat-hanger bowtie antenna which works great! (Look it up!) I am *not* using the included antenna (though it's not bad). It took a couple of tries (rescans) to get all the channels, trying different antenna positions. To this end, one thing the XBox/OneGuide tuner functionality desperately needs (aside from a DVR function obviously, though I hear that's still a future "possibility") is the ability to add/remove a particular channel manually, as well as an indicator of some that displays the signal strength for the channel you're attempting to set, which allows you to find the "sweet spot" for that channel, if there is one. This way you can add those hard-to-reach channels that the auto-scan might miss if the antenna isn't oriented quite right for that given channel. This functionality is common in HDTV tuners for quite some time, I'm not sure what reason they have not to work to provide it given Microsoft's want to truly be at the center of home media. Also, for what it's worth, the included antenna isn't all that great, but that's to be expected. Depending on orientation it brought in the stronger channels in my area just fine. It's nice that it's so low-profile and it may well work for many who are in an area with good reception of the major networks they want.
So, yes - this combination could definitely use a few improvements, but overall it's a pretty slick experience for live OTA television viewing.
One final note: If you are new to OTA channel reception, you need to know whether you are able to receive OTA signals with an antenna from your specific location? If not, or if the signal is poor you may have a rough time of it --- if you're in a location where the signals are not strong enough you'll need a better antenna than the included one here. How much better depends on your specific locations. Head over to AntennaWeb-Dot-Org to enter your address and find out how much antenna you need and where to point it for specific stations.
