What you need to know: Pretty much state of the art in consumer grade bioelectric scales
Short verdict - provides a whole lot of good data, fairly painlessly - it is as accurate a means to monitor body composition as you will find anywhere - and they make the big professional units that cost thousands more, using the same body modeling mathematics - but you need to be consistent in when and how you use it to obtain real accuracy.Only a few gripes - it's easy to tag the on off button by mistake, doesn't have a way to export data other than pen and pencil, the visceral fat number is unitless, and what it calls skeletal muscle is just the total weight of your body minus fat and bones. Sorry, but your lungs are not muscle. Lastly, it has an athlete mode to make up for differences in physiques between couch potatoes and athletes, but no adjustment for bodybuilders who also have the same issue with readout. Then again, nobody has that... yet... hint, hint...Since "everyone knows" DEXA scans are supposedly the final word in assessing body composition, it is claimed to be within a few percent of dexa scan results - but dexa itself has problems that can throw it off, such as difficulties handling obese folks. If you put a dexa machine, a dunk tank, a set of calipers, a plain bia machine, and the tanita side by side, no two of them would agree. What matters more is consistency.Tanita uses proprietary algorithms to calculate everything, fine with that, but some things are never fully explained....Now for the fun!You can dig into Tanita's website to find out more - including, good grief, that the 545F is for the North America market, and as they say it is adjusted to north american gravity. See attached graphic, while they are serious about it, gravity is not a constant in north america, nor anywhere else on the planet, so your mileage may vary with any scale... ! :) Oh, and for the curious, your weight does vary a pound or so depending where on earth you measure it. All silliness aside, I appreciate that they sweat details like that, tells me volumes about the numbers they use and how much work they put into modeling the human body with their equipment.Anywhoo, the scale does a nice job of providing a lot of repeatable data, probably as good as any body composition technology out there, and like those technologies, it has its quirks.Update: After a half a year, no issues. Would buy it again. Tanita's websites, here, eu, japan are all information goldmines with downloadable tracking charts and goodies. Some maintenance items - If the scale starts to act flaky it is usually because the foot pads aren't as clean as you think they are - or your feet aren't - or because it wants a battery. It also doesn't like being stored in really really cold places, and it prefers a hard smooth floor underneath it to be on its very best behaviour.
