There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
If I add this to distilled, I usually see 120-130ppm depending upon how full the jug is and how much of the powder I end up spilling. The results are pretty dramatic. Much much better coffee and much less scaling on my equipment (kettle, maker, dripper).
There are certainly DIY options that are cheaper than this, but this isn't expensive enough to make it worth the trouble for me.
I do wish they'd make the packets a little easier to deal with. Since they updated packaging a few months ago, I feel like I have been spilling parts of the packet more when I'm opening it.
Coffee with that water tastes good, but not better than with my regular filtered water.
I wouldn't buy that again, because it's not worth the hustle and money.
1) My water tank didn't feed water into the boilers correctly
2) My grouphead started spitting out steam instead of a steady stream of water
3) My steam wand lost pressure
4) The hot water tap dispensed cloudy water with flecks of "something" inside (looked silverish)
I spent over two hours with my retailer to resolve the problem. Here's where I think things went wrong:
1) The TWW packet needs time to dissolve (e.g. don't just put the packet into the gallon, swish around, and expect that the minerals are completely dissolved and ready to be put into the water tank)
2) The dissolving process needs to be refined (putting a packet of minerals into a full gallon of distilled water does not create a great environment to create a completely mixed, consistent, dissolved solution)
3) I spoke to someone from the company who told me that the TDS target was 150mg/L (this isn't on the packaging anywhere) and I still don't know how much Calcium they're adding to my boilers (too much? too little?)
It's a great product in concept, but needs a lot of work for the end customer. AND it's pricey. 15 gallons of water for $15 PLUS the cost of distilled water for minerals that you can buy from a natural food store for pennies.
You will get better coffee with Third Wave Water provided that: 1) you're using freshly roasted coffee, 2) your grind size matches your brew method, and 3) your brewing temperature is in the optimal range (200-205 degrees F). If any one of these is not true, this product will not cover up any shortcomings.
If you're already the type that buys coffee from specialty roasters and is into pour-over brewing, French press, or Aeropress, you'll notice *some* improvement in the clarity, acidity, and sweetness of your coffee with Third Wave Water. But if you're using pre-ground coffee in a standard drip maker, you probably won't notice much, if any, difference.
I held off on reviewing this until I had spent ample time with the product (almost two months now) and was able to compare it against filtered tap water, bottled spring water, etc.
Here's the long and short of it - The coffee I've brewed with Third Wave Water has consistently had better clarity of flavor (being able to pick up different notes in the coffee) and more sweetness than that brewed with my tap water filtered through a Brita.
BUT - this is the kicker - the difference is, overall, slight. Not night and day, but noticeable. Brewing with filtered water still gave me perfectly good and balanced coffee. I'm blessed to live in an area with reasonably good tap water (slightly hard but highly chlorinated), and I'm sure that impacts my opinion as well.
If you live in an area with very soft or very hard tap water, you will probably notice more of a difference with Third Wave. (Additionally, you won't have to worry about scaling or calcium buildup in your drip machine or kettle with this product.) If you have good quality tap water or use bottled water for your coffee, though, Third Wave Water is a game of diminishing returns.
If you're on the fence about this product, ask yourself two questions: 1) Can I justify the added expense of $15 every few weeks for better "coffee water," and, 2) Am I happy with the coffee I'm drinking right now using tap/bottled/filtered water? How you answer these questions will determine if Third Wave Water is right for you.
Top reviews from other countries
I have this product on auto order, I buy gallons of distilled water and have been doing it for years.
The coffee is less acidic and less bitter, and far more flavourful.
Moreover, whenever someone new comes over they always comment about how the coffee is incredible and ask what coffee I'm buying. They leave with 1 jug of distilled water and 1 sachet of the powder
and almost every time, they have also become a regular buyer and user.
I should really get a commission by now lol
My only gripe is the cost - it is pretty expensive given what you get
But otherwise it works as advertised, makes the coffee delicious, and even unknowing guests comment about the coffee until I tell them the secret.
If you want to try and make your coffee better - this is the thing.
