Sweetwater is Your Source for VST Sampling Software!

Take Any Sound and Make it Your Own with Samplers

In an age where anyone can upload music to a music platform, it is hard to stand out among the crowd. Turn heads and perk listeners' ears by incorporating samples from your favorite songs or creating never-before-heard instruments from an audio source with sampler plug-ins.

Some of the most iconic producers and musicians made it big by featuring clever and creative samples in their music, including Kanye West, Daft Punk, and J Dilla. A great way to get into sampling is to see what songs have been sampled the most and check out how producers and musicians incorporated them into their music. Speaking of often-sampled songs, the legendary "Amen Break" from The Winstons' "Amen, Brother" is the world's most sampled drum break, making an appearance in over 2,000 tracks!

What is a Sampler?

What is a sampler? A sampler is any device that captures audio and lets users play it back using a keyboard, MIDI controller, or sequencer. Samplers also typically allow you to playback a sample at different pitches. The first sampler to be heavily employed in popular music was the Mellotron. The Mellotron stored pre-recorded audio on analog tape, and users could trigger the audio loops using a standard keyboard.

In the 1980s, samplers went digital. Some of the earliest digital samplers, such as the Emu Emulator, the CMI Fairlight, the Akai S900, and the Ensoniq Mirage, are still coveted by musicians and collectors. Software samplers (sampler plug-ins or sampler VSTs) operate on the same principle as their hardware predecessors. But, due to the enhanced processing power of modern computers, they are far more flexible.

Sample Players vs. Sampler Workstations

Sampler VSTs come in two types: sample players and sampler workstations. Sample players are virtual instruments that come pre-loaded with sampled sounds. Most virtual instruments that re-create real-life instruments are sample players, for example, Toontracks EZ Series instruments, many of the libraries on Kontakt, and the East West suite of orchestral instruments. Sampler workstations, like UVI Falcon 2.5 or Waves CR8, allow you to create custom instruments from any sampled material. And like old-school hardware samplers, sampler workstation VSTs give you access to modulation sources, such as envelopes and LFOs, and built-in effects for shaping your sounds.
