Two Matched Ribbon Mics in One Body

The Royer SF-12 stereo coincident ribbon microphone combines high-quality audio performance with outstanding stereo separation and imaging. And, because it offers true stereophonic operation, you can achieve Blumlein and M-S recordings — from a single microphone. This modern ribbon design ensures no audible diffraction effects or cavity resonance. Moreover, since the SF-12 was designed without internal active electronics to overload, you get distortion-free performance all the way up to the microphone's impressive 130dB SPL rating. You also get low magnetic leakage, along with high-efficiency toroid transformers and a gold-plated output connector. Engineers searching for a streamlined method for top-shelf stereo recording owe it to themselves to check out the SF-12 from Sweetwater.

Two matched ribbon mics in one body

The Royer SF-12 is actually two matched ribbon microphones placed one above the other and fixed at a 90-degree angle. This arrangement allows for Blumlein and M-S recording with one microphone and excellent monaural compatibility when summing the two ribbon elements to mono. The SF-12's frequency response is excellent regardless of the angle of sound striking the ribbons, and off-axis coloration is negligible. The Royer SF-12's extension cable comes with an adapter that splits into separate left and right XLR connectors labeled "upper" and "lower."

Superb transient response from low-mass ribbons

The Royer SF-12's two 1.8-micron ribbons comprise pure (99.99%) aluminum and provide superb transient response due to their low mass. Each of the Royer SF-12's two ribbon transducers incorporates "cross-field" motor assemblies (patent pending), which consist of four powerful neodymium magnets and permendur iron pole pieces. This crossfield design delivers excellent high-frequency response due to the extremely short path between the front and rear (sides) of the ribbon elements. The microphone's case is ingot iron and forms part of the magnetic return circuit, an effective system with low leakage flux that accounts for the relatively high sensitivity in a trim package.

Stereo recording at its finest for any application

Trust the Royer SF-12 to provide flawless reproduction of any stereo source. It's especially well suited to capture large sections and ensembles with outstanding clarity and imaging. The SF-12 is ideal for percussion instruments, acoustic guitars, and other plucked strings.

Royer: mics that are as good as Grammy gold

a balanced stereo mic

I had AT4050ST for overhead drums miking, it was amazing. but after compare SF-12 with it side by side, I have to say Royer is the winner. I run it with my RME XTC, gain 40 it already rocks, balanced and musical melody. it's all about the mid range, and the low end is just right. try before buy, or you may miss a magic! thanks to my manager Dennis Konicki, he's so patient and never let me down.

Wow! Drum Overhead and Acoustic mic magic!

I wanted a mic that would give me the best possible sound for acoustic instruments and make a great drum overhead. The Royer SF-12 does both with ease. My very first recording with this mic on an acoustic guitar made it obvious I was going to love it! Today I used the SF-12 for a drum overhead, put a MA-200 about 10 inches from the Kick drum port and a SM-57 on the snare. The SF-12 captured a very clean and realistic full bodied drum sound. I dressed up the sound by adding a little of the Kick drum mic and the snare mic, simply amazing.
This ribbon really does take eq wonderfully, the nice thing is that it is easier to get the sound I want now. It is worth the money if you can afford it. You will need a high gain, very clean preamp, but you will like the results.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

I haven't found a more natural-sounding mic than the Royer SF-12.

Alex Arnold

The Royer SF-12 is a fantastic ribbon microphone! The SF-12 is actually a stereo microphone, and as some people have put it, actually two SF-1's combined. It is a great value for the money, and is a microphone no studio would want to be without. In my experience of using it, I have found that it sounds great on a variety of instruments. I have used it on drums and the result is stunning; the captured warmth of the SF-12 translates beautifully even through an Mbox! This mic sounds not only great on drums, but on vocals, and guitar. I did some A/B comparisons between the Royer SF-12 and Audio Technica's AT3035, and while the AT3035 is a decent mic, the SF-12 blew it out of the water! The big difference is that the AT3035 has a slight tendency to sound 'tinny,' while the SF-12 sounds big and warm and nice in the lower end. All in all the Royer SF-12 would be a valued treasure to any home or commercial studio.

When Royer Labs got their Technical Grammy in 2013, they couldn't wait to come to Sweetwater to show it off. One thing they impressed on us was how much our amazing relationship helped to get the word out about their products. Of course, getting the word out about their amazing ribbon mics was easy - we've never regretted recommending them. In fact, it wouldn't be immodest to say that Royer was one of the biggest forces behind the ribbon mic's recent return to popularity. In addition to providing greater clarity and transparency to the classic ribbon sound, Royer's designs dramatically reduced the bulk and weight of these mics. That's made it easy for the engineers at Sweetwater Studios to use Royer ribbons for close-miking amps and getting deep into drum kits and acoustic pianos. We absolutely love them, and we're sure you will too.
