Revolutionary in the ’70s — Indispensable Now
You heard it on Led Zeppelin’s "Kashmir" — the unmistakable, delicious, swirlicious sound of the Eventide Instant Phaser. Eventide’s Instant Phaser was one of the first dedicated electronic effects units to become available. Now Sweetwater is proud to present to you the Eventide Instant Phaser Mk II plug-in, from the company that wrote the book on electronic phasing.
In 1970, studio racks held preamps, EQs, limiters, compressors, patchbays, and not much else. It was the pre-electronic effects era. In the ’60s, nearly all studio trickery was achieved electromechanically. The Beatles were intrepid sonic explorers, and they were working in a high-end facility — EMI London (later renamed Abbey Road Studios) — alongside innovative recording and technical engineers with access to the best gear available at the time. Check out Sgt. Pepper and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”: You’re hearing homegrown delay-based phasing and flanging effects that relied on the creative use of tape machines and variable-frequency oscillators.

Eventide gives birth to instant phasing
As it was developed just before the advent of digital delay, Eventide’s Instant Phaser hardware unit employed an alternative method involving a series of eight carefully tuned, FET-based, analog all-pass filters that delivered sweeping comb-filtration effects that sounded similar to — yet distinct from — tape flanging, while preserving the sonic integrity of the original signal. The Instant Phaser found instant favor with engineers and producers who put it to work in subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways to create enveloping, evolving stereo soundscapes from monaural sources. By the mid ’70s, the Instant Phaser was heard on countless rock and jazz fusion records. Phasing even found its way into guitar pedals.
Today there are myriad plug-ins that produce phasing effects, but in 1971, it was the Eventide Instant Phaser that put phasing in the rack. And now you can enhance your recordings with this cool effect for a song — within the convenience of your DAW — with the Eventide Instant Phaser Mk II plug-in.
Eventide Instant Phaser Mk II Plug-in Features:
- 4 methods for controlling phasing: Manual for writing precise automation of the effect; Oscillator modulates the phasing at a constant, user-defined rate; Envelope changes the phase whenever your signal passes a specified threshold via sidechain; Remote maps phasing control to a modwheel for tactile manipulation
- New/Old Age knob lets you dial in component drift and electrical leakage
- Mode switch offers 3 different flavors of phasing: Shallow, Deep, and Wide
- Utilize one of 4 distinct methods to control phasing
- Depth lets you combine the phased signal with the dry signal
- Added Side Chain function lets you trigger the Envelope Follower from a separate source in the mix
- Sync and Retrig controls give you control over the oscillator
- Feedback control lets you dial in a more pronounced sound
- Includes standard gain input and output
