About Bass Traps
Muddy bass in your mix space is one of the leading factors separating your mixes from the majors. As our friends at Dangerous Music like to say, “You can’t mix what you can’t hear.”
Ever wonder how the pros achieve that tight, balanced low-end response? It starts with clever engineering and is aided by the treatment of bass buildup and standing waves in the mixing environment using bass traps.
What are bass traps?
Bass traps are an essential part of the acoustic-treatment hierarchy. These high-density absorption panels are built from fiberglass, foam, or mineral wool materials with high absorption coefficients. They’re engineered to deliver broadband absorption that reaches deep down into the bass, kick, and sub-synth registers of your audio — specializing in frequencies below 300Hz.
Note that most bass traps also absorb and reflect frequencies much higher than 300Hz. But bass traps are unique in their ability to treat problematic bass caused by modal ringing, a common issue with small and undertreated rooms.
Which bass traps are right for my studio?
Bass traps at Sweetwater come in three main varieties. Corner bass traps are effective at filling the entirety of your studio’s corners, which are hot spots for bass buildup. Panel bass traps mount parallel to your side walls and have air gaps behind them to nullify modal bass as it arrives at your ears. Finally, gobo bass traps are freestanding broadband absorbers used in live rooms to help isolate sound sources from one another. All types of bass traps are effective at treating bass buildup.
How do bass traps work, and why do I need them?
Bass traps enhance your mixes by reducing and flattening the audible bass in your control room, which often yields neutral and better-translating recordings.
Think of it this way: If you have +20dB of excess 80Hz flying around your control room and you mix to what sounds right, then your low end will sound -20dB too thin at 80Hz played back anywhere but in your room — in your car, on your phone, and through earbuds.
Bass traps are also effective at smoothing out the low-end “wooliness” in a mix environment that can mask your lead sources and lead to excess corrective EQ.
