Incursion (The Supernova Cycle Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 157 ratings

A nearby supernova...and an impending first contact...will change humanity forever.

From the multiple USA Today bestselling author of Accord of Honor, Ad Astra, and more than sixty other books, and debut author Elizabeth McLaughlin comes a spellbinding sci-fi thriller about two people's desperate struggle to save humanity from extinction.

In the near future, a supernova erupts unexpectedly in a nearby star. There was no warning, no evidence that the star could ignite in such a way. Humanity stands on the brink of extinction as Earth is bombarded with particles from the stellar explosion, wreaking havoc.

An alien ship has arrived near Earth's moon only hours before light from the supernova. Have they come to help, or are they mortal enemies who plan to take advantage of the supernova's EMP to stage an invasion?

Doctor Alexandra King never knew that the paper she once wrote about theoretical xeno-psychology would lead the US government to consider her their foremost expert on the subject. Ace pilot David Jackson has been assigned a mission which might save humanity - or doom it - and he won't know which until after he's done the job.

Join them as they struggle to make sense of a changed world and do whatever it takes to ensure the human race has a shot at surviving the Supernova Cycle!

I read your book in one evening and for a first time enterprise I'm super excited to see a new talented author come into your own. The book was fast paced with a great story line and a hook at the end as I can't wait to follow the characters into the cosmos. The characters where well defined and I was very much able to relate to them. Please send me more and please, keep writing.

This was a very good book. I wasn't sure how I felt about your story at first. The more I read the more I liked it. Before I knew it I was hooked . There are certain things I look for in stores is mystery, intrigue, action, hope, some humor and a touch of love..... Thank you

The book takes you on a trip that had a lot of ups and downs and how stupid people can be at times. But it took a outsider to show the way , a woman with a attitude to wake them up. The was well done with a great story to keep you wanting more.

This is an interesting story told with fair prose, weak proof reading and occasional and jarring modern profanity that adds nothing to the story. The military and academic stereotypes are a bit hard to accept and not well done. But the story is an original and imaginative one. The characters are well portrayed and create some empathy in this reader. It is an exciting storyline.

Though I love the concept, it was annoying to read. I found errors that made me distracted. Do rather than of, your in place of you're, that sort of thing. Needs a clean edit. I will read more and truly hope it clears up.

A first contact confused by a horrific coincidence. Then who would expect a civil war, in the middle of the crisis. Truly an excellent story. Tense writing I had to fish so bad I skipped out of work! Enjoy! I already have the next two.

If you know anything about the US government or the military, don’t read this book. You will have to carve out that part of your brain. Sad part is a little proof reading by virtually anyone but these authors could have caught the stupidness and corrected it in 5 minutes.

This is a very quick read since the action continues at a pace that makes it difficult to put down. I've seen a few earlier reviews that said that the military and government reactions were unrealistic, but I'd say that it seems more likely they'd make, if not the same mistakes, then very similar ones. The main characters are interesting, and I'm looking forward to getting to know them better (maybe a bit more character development?) in future books in the series. If I have one complaint, I would wish that the book was a bit longer so that we could get a few more details.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful
Reviewed in Canada on December 13, 2020
I read this book because Kevin M put his name to it. Doesn't approach his usual quality. Giving it 2 stars is pretty generous and only justified because these are the days that everyone gets a trophy for participation. Its a loosely compiled list of worn out cliches. The plot is completely unbelievable even with my reality suspension settings at max. The characters - even the aliens - are shallow stereotypes. There is essentially no humour, though I did enjoy the alien barf moment. I was pining for an alien head-melting yodel moment long before I made it half way through. Ack! Ack!

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb 'First Contact' story.

A First Contact story that had me engrossed from the word go, if this were a stand alone story I would be satisfied with a story well told, the fact that there are another two episodes is the icing on the cake, I am looking forward to the next book. I think I have just discovered my new favourite author!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very readable book
Reviewed in Germany on July 5, 2020
I really enjoyed reading this book.
A page turner filled with the best and worst of humanity. The aliens are mirrors of humanity and refreshing in their familiarity.
The novel could use a closer proofreading in a few places. Those slips were distracting and a pity in such an enjoyable experience.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read

Kevin often has links to other writers works, so I thought I’d give one a go and wasn’t disappointed.

The story is solid with great characters that form a solid backbone through the book, and the “two sides” that the book is written from is clever and occasionally makes you consider things from a different point of view.

Before I realised it, I was 90% through and reaching the culmination of the first part. Diving straight into book 2!

3.0 out of 5 stars Struggling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 18, 2020
I get that books have typos, but I’m two thirds through the first book of three and the typos are becoming very distracting. I realise that I shouldn’t care and should just read past them, but it’s off putting when you have to read the same sentence twice to get what the author was actually saying rather than the words on the page. Worse when you read a paragraph and then find yourself reading the same paragraph again because it’s been duplicated.

The story itself, once you get past the ‘all women are great, good, kind and level headed and all men are jar-head Neanderthals’ style is pretty good.
