Sparrow in the Razor Wire: Finding Freedom from Within While Serving a Life Sentence Kindle Edition
This could have been the end of the story for Quan, as it is for many prisoners. But somewhere along the way, he discovered a new path—one that prompted him to commit to self-reflection, truth, and personal responsibility.
Sparrow in the Razor Wire is Quan’s story of transformation inside a place many see as the end of the road. In his book, he shares the journey of redemption and discovery that led to his ultimate freedom. He found that, no matter the prison, the key to unlocking the door is in each one of us.

Review
--Bryan Stevenson, executive director, Equal Justice Initiative and author of #1 New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy
"The first time I heard Quan speak, my jaw literally dropped. I could not believe his courage and vulnerability. I have only become more impressed with him as I've gotten to know him. His book is an incredible story of resilience, compassion, and hope from a man I am proud to call a friend. I can't recommend his story enough."
--Tucker Max, 4x New York Times bestselling author
"Quan's story illustrates a lifelong process of identity formation--from a child finding his place in the world, to a gang member trying to improve his social standing and self-respect, to a convicted murderer learning to thrive within the rules of prison culture, and finally to a curious and humble person working to improve his own life and the lives of others."
--Earlonne Woods, co-creator and co-host of the Pulitzer Prize Finalist podcast, Ear Hustle, and former life-term prisoner
"Quan's story illuminates that 'most of the time, what holds us back is entirely in our heads.' From the time he made the decision to transform his mindset and find freedom inside the walls of a prison, Quan demonstrated the kind of passion and persistence that allowed him to knock down the barriers to his future."
--Steve Sims, author of Bluefishing
"Quan's is a story of personal transformation that can give hope to those who are currently incarcerated, as well as to those who will one day be their neighbors."
--Chris Wilson, author of The Master Planand former life-term prisoner

As I come to the end of a semester-long internship with Defy Ventures, I express my deep appreciation for this empowering organization and the inspiring individuals who lead it, including Quan Huynh, the Executive Director of Defy Ventures. This entrepreneurship program for incarcerated individuals equips participants with professional development opportunities to set them up for success as they re-enter society and seek economic independence.
Reading Quan’s memoir gave me powerful insight into the deeply transformative mission of Defy, making this internship a life-changing experience for me. Huynh's honest and courageous storytelling provides a powerful exploration of identity, discrimination, and the pursuit of belonging, while also inspiring readers to reflect on their own biases and strive towards a more inclusive society.
Personally, I was touched by the resilience and strength of the author and those he met along his journey of recidivism. As an Asian-American, Quan highlights the complexities of navigating multiple identities in a society that often struggles with diversity and inclusion. He grapples with questions of self-worth, acceptance, and the search for a sense of belonging. Each of us has a part to play in making our society more inclusive, and this effort starts with genuine, individual interactions in our personal and circles of influence!
Additionally, I am reminded of the power of vulnerability within spaces that aren’t apparently conducive to open, honest conversation. In our professional environments, we should strive to create spaces of belonging in which individuals feel recognized for their unique backgrounds and contributions. Connections forge as employees begin to see each other as more than colleagues, but as humans.
I highly recommend this memoir to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the power of personal narratives in fostering empathy and understanding!
I had pondered these questions for years, and having read this book, I understand more than I ever thought possible. Quan's story was emotionally gripping from the start to the final page.
His detailed descriptions of a life journey from difficult circumstances in childhood that led to life as a gang member were fascinating and revealing while being shockingly relatable. The ripples that resulted from pervasive discrimination were illuminating in a way that I pray will shine much-needed light on the dark corners of society.
Quan's book detailed the life perspective he had up to the murder and the massive shift he experienced while being in prison. Immersed in his world there with him, it was gritty and authentic. The genuine softness and compassion in his heart built up toward the book's conclusion.
Quan succeeds in providing a candid look at the horrendous consequences of having committed a murder and the resulting life sentence in prison. His story involves breaking through complex emotional layers of suffering from torment, the pain of not belonging, and fighting to fit in. It is a story of his passage toward peace and reconciliation as well as redemption.
I appreciate how honest Quan is in telling his story. The first half of the book details dark, dark periods of his life, including the murder he committed and for which he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. In reading these dark details I felt simultaneously horrified and connected to him because without holding back or justifying, he clearly describes and acknowledges the violence he lived with and committed, while also managing to treat the person he was when those events occurred with some kindness. I believe Quan has honestly forgiven himself, and is now committing his life to serving others.
I also was inspired the way this book illustrated how very simple acts of kindness from one person to another can add up and lead a person from the darkness to light. This is powerful.
I highly recommend this memoir, this uplifting story of a young man's life. I liked it so much that I read it twice.
