World’s Fastest1 AF acquisition speed of 0.03 sec. 2The RX10IV features the world’s fastest1 AF acquisition time thanks to its 1" Exmor RS stacked back illuminated CMOS sensor w/ DRAM and fast Hybrid AF system that combines the respective advantages of 315 phase-detection AF points - covering approximately 65% of the sensor - and contrast-detection AF to ultimately enable the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.03 seconds2. Subjects can be tracked and captured with precise detail and clarity within the extensive 24-600mm3 range. |
Incredible Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensorThis large 1” (1.0-type) back illuminated Exmor RS stacked image sensor with DRAM chip not only enhances efficiency and speed of A/D conversion through its stacked structure due to more circuit sections; it also realizes super-fast readout speed - thanks to a DRAM chip integrated into the sensor structure. Together with the BIONZ X processing engine and front-end LSI, it allows for stunning 20.1-megapixels at up to 24fps4 continuous shooting up to 249 frames5 with AF/AE tracking, blazingly fast shutter speed of up to 1/32000 sec., breathtaking 4k6 movie and super slow-motion HFR7 (High Frame Rate) movie clip recording of up to 960fps (40x), not to mention remarkable low-light low-noise capability. |
ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm3 ultra-zoom lensThe astonishing 24-600mm3 ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens features a large maximum aperture of F2.4-F4.0, helping it achieve outstanding image quality throughout the entire ultra-telephoto zoom range. Eight ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements including two ED aspherical and one Super ED lenses compensate for the chromatic aberration while the ZEISS T* Coating helps reduce flare and ghosting. This incredible lens also features built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and a minimum focusing distance of 2.36 ft. with 0.49x maximum magnification for tele-macro photography. |

24 fps4 up to 249 frames5 with AF/AE trackingDesigned to allow for high resolution, continuous shooting at high frame rates, the RX10 IV features a BIONZ X image processing engine with front-end LSI that achieves high-speed continuous shooting of 20.1-megapixel images at up to 24 fps4 with full AF/AE tracking, and an impressive buffer limit of up to 249 images5. With the significant improvements in processing power for the RX10 IV, EVF display lag during continuous shooting has been substantially reduced, allowing you to capture the decisive moment with ultimate confidence. Also, for convenience during image playback, continuously shot images can be displayed in groups instead of individual shots. |
4K6 movie w/ direct pixel readout, no pixel binning and fast AFRX10 IV offers the advantages of 4K6 (QFHD 3840 x 2160) movie recording, with its Fast Hybrid AF system, realizing fast and accurate focusing speed and AF tracking for video. In 4K6 mode, the new RX10 IV utilizes full pixel readout without pixel binning, capturing approximately 1.7x more information than is required for 4K6 movie output ensuring that all the finest details are captured accurately. Utilizing the XAVC S9 codec to record video at a high data rates, users have the option of shooting at either 24p or 30p in 4K6 mode up to 100mpbs, or in frame rates of up to 120p in Full HD mode. |
Super-speed Anti-Distortion ShutterThe super-speed Anti-Distortion Shutter has a maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second, which minimizes the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This blazingly fast shutter speed also allows the camera to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture in bright conditions. Shooting at wide aperture with fast shutter speed allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions. |

High-density Tracking AF technology. For the first time on a RX-series camera, advanced high-density tracking AF technology - which had only been previously available in a select few of Sony’s acclaimed line of α interchangeable lens cameras - concentrates AF points around a subject to improve tracking and focus accuracy, allowing even the most unpredictable subjects including fast-moving athletes and birds in flight to be captured with ease. |
Optical SteadyShot image stabilizationThe built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to reduce image blur caused from camera shake, equivalent to approximate 4.5 stops shutter speed improvement, which is especially handy at high magnification when the lens is fully extended to 600mm, but equally as good throughout the entire zoom range. |
Tele-macro up to 600mm3 as close as 2.36 ft.With a minimum focusing distance of 2.36 ft (72 cm) and 0.49x maximum magnification at a fully extended 600mm3, the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm3 F2.4-F4.0 lens is capable of producing amazingly detailed tele-macro images. |

There are a number of reasons why I've chosen the fixed-lens RX10 Mk IV as my second camera. The drawbacks are immediately apparent (one inch sensor, fixed lens.) But there are a lot of advantages, especially given what you get for the price. Here are the things I like about this camera:
1. The fixed lens is a very sharp 28-600mm zoom. To get that much reach out of any lens I could get on the a7sii, I would be well into five figures, which I can't afford. And to get that reach through a series of primes would require lens-switching time which isn't practical in run-and-gun photography situations. More and more often, I find myself choosing this camera over the full frame, because I can be there to quickly get the shot.
2. The 1" sensor is actually very good. I'm happy with the images I can get from it.
3. The camera doesn't look intimidating. I look like a tourist with it, and therefore can avoid being challenged in cases where a camera might seem threatening to someone. Also, the monitor panel on the back can be turned up for easy monitoring. I rarely find myself looking through the viewfinder. More and more often, I'm taking photos at hip level, where it looks like I'm fiddling with the camera's settings rather than taking pictures. These are often the best pictures I get in a day of shooting.
4. Although I prefer not to shoot video with this camera, I can get pretty good quality 4K video out of the camera if the lighting is good. I like to carry it as a second camera when I don't think I'll need a second camera as a "just in case" camera that doesn't take up a lot of space in the bag. It's also a credible backup if my first camera breaks or fails.
5. Turns out, the zoom is pretty smooth. You can occasionally get one of those great '70's-looking slow-zoom shots on this camera on the cheap, with nothing else but a tripod.
6. One time my audio recorder broke, and I patched a shotgun mic into this camera and used it to record sync sound. This worked!, and saved the day.
7. If you don't have a rig built, a bunch of batteries charged, etc., you can just grab this camera and run out the door. Sometimes this is a really nice option to have.
8. Sometimes you show up with a big rig built, and you realize what you need is just to get down in the dirt with a small camera. If you have this camera with you, you can do this without taking a half-hour to tear everything down. I really like having this option.
If you follow pro Sony shooters on Instagram or other platforms, and you look at the technical specs, you'll find that many of them are now taking 25-75% of their photos (especially street photos) on either this camera or on the RX100, which is a miniature version of this camera with a 24-200 lens. I think their reasons are more or less the same as the ones I listed above.
These Sony cameras keep getting better and better. They've brought a lot of pleasure into my life, and they're helping me to transition from a career primarily oriented around writing, to a more dexterous career in which I can find and tell stories in multiple media. I'm a big fan of these cameras in general, and of the RX10 Mk IV in particular, and can recommend it with great enthusiasm.
However... I have become more practical. Traveling with my Nikon and its variety of lenses (the prime 55mm, a 24-85MM, and the 85-200) isn;t convenient... they are bulky, and my family gets annoyed everytime I ask them to stop so I can swap out lenses.
Soooo... for the last few years, I have decided to leave my Nikon at home and travel with my Fuji X100V (for portraits, landscapes and etc) and this... the SonyRX10 IV. I use this Sony for all of the reach I can get.... which is significant.
Notes-
- Let's address picture quality first. This camera is not in the same league as my Nikon D850 - especially when the Nikon is paired with high-quality lenses. The sharpness, saturation, low light capability, and etc are much closer to a camera phone than a high-quality DSLR. However, that is ok.. most of the time. I you are just trying to capture shots (and not trying to sell prints) this Sony is almost always "good enough" .
- Convenience - so that is what it is all about - one camera that can do it all. I stick this thing in my backpack and I don't need to worry about multiple lenses.... plus I have the equivalent of a 600mm lens, even when I travel with a DSLR I never bring anything with that kind of reach. So instead of packing my DSLR and 3 to 4 lenses (which is around 10k in equipment) I just carry the Sony (and my Fuji). This makes travel so much easier.
- Focus - lightning fast and usually pretty accurate.
- Battery life- meh- buy an extra battery. Also, buy an external battery pack so you can charge the camera on the go!
- Ease of use - Super easy to use in auto... but good luck trying to figure out how to shoot this thing in manual. I am also not a huge fan of the compensators location. I accidentally rolled it to a +2 and washed out a half dozen photos before I noticed.
- Video - I have only used it rarely, but it is a capable camera. The slow motion capabilities are not necessarily easy to use, but it can record at unmatched frame-rates.
- Low light capability... well it will probably beat your cell phone due to the 1" sensor, but it is still limited for indoor use. Thus the need for a decent point-and-shoot camera. Something like the Fuji X100v is a perfect compliment since it *can* take high quality portraits both indoors and out.
- Zoom - it really is fantastic to have so much reach. We find ourselves using the camera with it's optical (and sometimes digital) zoom as a substitute for binoculars. As long as you are outdoors the zoom can be paired with the appropriate shutter speed to help eliminate camera shake. I have never needed to use it with a tripod.
Final Verdict - A great camera for travel... or the occasional (outdoor) sporting event. It doesn't produce the high quality photos that you'd get from your DSLR, but if you are just posting photos on FB.... no one will ever notice (unless they are also a camera snob!)
