Our Heritage

The story of Seiko began in 1881, when a 21 year old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. Just eleven years later, in 1892, he established the 'Seikosha' factory.

ss

Seikosha was founded; started producing wall clocks.

In 1892 Kintaro Hattori bought a disused factory in Tokyo and Seikosha was formed (In Japanese, "Seiko" means "exquisite", "minute" or "success" and "sha" means house). It was here that Kintaro Hattori produced his first clocks and these marked the beginnings of a company that was to become one of the important manufacturers of timepieces.

The Legacy Carries On

When, in 1913, Seiko built its first wrist watch, the company’s president called it the Laurel. It was not only a first for Seiko, but also a first for Japan and it was the beginning of a tradition of innovation that resulted directly from Kintaro Hattori’s determination. Today, after more than 130 years of innovation, Kintaro Hattori’s company is still dedicated to the dreams that the founder always strove to achieve.

Great watch from Seiko but not so great shipping from Amazon
5 Stars
Great watch from Seiko but not so great shipping from Amazon
I'll try to breakdown the review as follows:-SizeWith 38mm case diameter and 45mm lug to lug, this is the perfect size for a smaller wrist like myself (about 6.5in).-Case materialsSapphire crystal on the front dial which should be hard and scratch resistant, and hardlex on the back for better resistance to impact. I like the clear case back and being able to see the movement or heart of the watch. No anti reflective coating on the sapphire but the off-white dial gives great clarity and legibility and shouldn't be an issue with light reflections. Water resistant is rated 100 meters but I would be hesitant to swim with it. It's ok to wash the dishes with it if you want the wife approval.-BraceletThis is where Seiko gets bashed the most, even in their Grand Seiko line. With the stock stainless steel bracelet, you only get 2 micro-adjustments. There's a lot of complaints about the watch being either too loose or too tight. For me personally, it fits fine. Overall, it's not the best but certainly not the worst.Just a word of caution when removing the links.. There is the pin that holds the links together and a collar that holds the pin tightly. You can easily lose the collar if you're not paying attention.-Movement / AccuracyThis watch has the Seiko 6R15 movement with a 50hr power reserve which is a better movement than some of its more expensive line. It also has the ability to hand wind and hacking (can stop the seconds hand to accurately set time). Accuracy of the movement is rated -15/+25 seconds per day. But mine is about +15 seconds/day.. I'm ok with that and mechanical watches tend to slow down a bit over time. But I normally set my watches a minute in advance anyway since I'd rather be early than late.-VersatilityThis is a watch that adjusts to what you wear. Whether your at a formal event, or having a quick stroll at the beach, it doesn't look like its out of place. Slap a jubilee bracelet, mesh or a leather strap with it, it will adapt to any lifestyle.-LooksCheck the attached pictures and you decide.. The watch display a different character in certaing lighting conditions. Those pictures were taken on a sunny day outdoors and notice the watch portrays a different hue of the dial and the number markers in a slight lighting change. Stunning.-Packaging / ShippingThis one is strictly on Amazon. This watch can range from $350-$450 and Amazon decided to ship it in a plain brown envelope. Really Amazon?? My wife's lotion was shipped way more protected than this! Very disappointing..Quick note for the people that may be confused on the packaging:The Seiko SARB collection (033, 035, 017) is a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) model. When you get these watches from Amazon (sold by Amazon), it was already repackaged for the US market. What they did was put on a tag that says hardlex on it, partially true but seems confusing. But it is an authentic watch. If you watch unboxing videos on youtube, the packaging will be different as most reviews have the original box/tags from Japan (Yes, it looks way nicer).-AvailabilityNot sure how Amazon is still keeping a stock of these knowing that these are discontinued back in 2018 (or so they say). But either way, its a win for the consumers. It's unfortunate that Seiko (allegedly) discontinued this line and rather came out with a more expensive line (SARX) that kind of mimics what this watch is, at a price that is well above this price range. I'm guessing they have to do that otherwise this will cannibalize their SARX line.-PriceGreat for what you get. Got mine for around $330 but pricing fluctuates everyday but get it while you still can. I see it around 380-400 which I think is still a solid deal given the long term value of the watch. Not to mention other retailers are overpricing this item because of scarcity. Word of caution: Don't overpay (I'd say 450+ is a bit much).-OverallI rarely write reviews other than a love or hate of the product. This one just falls on the former and on my recommended list. But like what others have already mentioned here and elsewhere, this watch punches above its weight. It's that good that you can hardly find flaws given the value of what you are getting for such a reasonable price. It's arguably the best watch in its price range. It's a beautiful time piece that will undoubtedly be a future classic. I've got a Hamilton, Oris, Tag, and some micro brands, and this one is always in the rotation. If you are unsure of the dial, they also have the black version in the SARB033.. They are both equally impressive and you can never go wrong with either of them. Better yet, get both..Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, elegant watch that could easily be priced for a lot more than it cost!
Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2015
I have only recently got into the watch company Seiko. But since this time and doing much research, I am a fan of the brand. They make quality watches and pay close attention to the areas they need to when making a watch. This watch is simply beautiful. It demands respect and looks as if it could compete with watches that would easily cost over $1,000.

Overall: This watch is a step above the Seiko 5 line which is Seiko's bargain automatic watches of decent quality. This has a higher mechanical movement than the lower Seiko 5 line (which already is a good movement), with a very smooth sweeping seconds hand and a large power reserve of about 50+ hours. This watch also comes with a clear back on the casing. The finish is amazing as well. The watch is of a nice elegant size of 38mm and has a nice quality weight to the watch.

Band: The bracelet on this watch is very high end. It is simple with only 3 sections to the links (almost similar to the oyster design). The bracelet is heavy enough to know it is of decent quality. The surface is brush metal and the sides of the links are polished. The clasp is very solid and strong fold over design but has a more skeleton design as opposed to one piece. The end links are solid and not hollow so they feel seamless and simply apart of the casing. This is the area most Seiko 5 series watches cut on quality, in the area of the band.

Face and Casing: This is what makes this watch incredible. The dial is an off white, cream color. It is a very simple yet elegant design. The words Seiko below the 12th digit and automatic and 23 jewels above the 6th digit. The date window seems simple, but with a nice trim to highlight its location. Then hands are very nice, sharp and smooth. Not the fat finger hands you find on lower end watches. The seconds hand has a sewing needed look which is just fitting for this classy setup. The sides of the casing face are polished around the dial with a beautiful shine and on the outer sides of that you have brush finish. Along each side of the casing you find angles that divide the watch into 2 segments when you are viewing from the side, each of these halves are polished. The back of the watch has a clear backing which shows the mechanical workings of the watch. The pieces used for the inners are clearly thicker and of greater quality over the Seiko 5 lines inner workings. You can see the little details of writing in bold black on the inner mechanics to let you know clearly the name of the moment, the jewels and various other information about the watch. The rear casing looks very thick and strong as well, once again, compared to the lower end models. And finally, the crown. The crown is large, like on most quality high end watches. It does not screw out, but it does have a winding function and hacking for the seconds hand. It has a textured design on the sides of the crown which I find to be very nice and the Seiko symbol of an "S" in the face of the crown. It really has a high end quality to the crown that really holds its own and makes a bold statement that, "this is a Seiko and it is nice, with Seiko branding"

Update: 12/05/2015: I look at this watch everyday, even if I do not wear it for the day. I will say hands down this is the best watch ever! Nothing compares for this price range.

This Seiko Sarb035 was purchased from Amazon.ca and delivered in two days to my place in Toronto, Canada. I am really impressed by Amazon's ability to achieve such fast shipping.

The finishing on this watch is very close to the finishing that we expect from Grand Seiko. Have a look at the second hand and you will see a design similar to a sewing needle. This is a nice touch. The movement is a 6R15D and I am told that this is one of the better movements with 23 Jewels and a 50 hour power reserve. I have not had the watch long enough to test the time accuracy yet. If I find unacceptable variances, I will report back. So far so good.

The chapter ring alignment is perfect. The sapphire crystal on the face is perfect. The clear crystal on the back is perfect for exploring the beauty of a mechanical watch. And a nice detail is the "S" signature on the crown. The size is also excellent at 38 mm diameter. The case has a combination of brushed and high polished areas.

From the photos attached, I have replaced the stock bracelet with a black "waterproof" leather band with white stitching (20mm). The stock steel band is good quality, but I just wanted a different look.

If you like the stock steel bracelet, it has a combination of brushed and polished surfaces with polished sides. The locking mechanism is quite good but I have seen better. The only negative of the bracelet is the lack of more micro-adjustments. The bracelet uses pins to hold it together, not screws. And the bracelet is 20 mm wide. If the band could be improved, perhaps a fold back locking mechanism like that found on diving watches.

The dial has subtle luminescence which makes the face readable when it gets dark.
This might sound funny to some, but this SARB035 watch is comparable to a ROLEX DateJust or the ROLEX Explorer models, but at a fraction of the price. The Seiko SARB035 is an incredible value.

This watch would have been perfect, if the crown could screw down for even better water resistance and if the locking mechanism of the clasp was a bit stronger or if it had a secondary fold down mechanism like that found on diving watches, but there is nothing wrong with the watch as is.

This watch is a keeper. Enjoy your watch!!! Great value. Mark my words, as this watch becomes harder to get, the price will go up.
