About this item
- THE SMOOTHEST SHAVE for both men & women – Significantly reducing ingrown hair, skin irritations and razor burn often experienced with plastic cartridge razors, helping you finally achieve the smoothest, cleanest and closest shave.
- LIFELONG DURABILITY – This ALL-IN-ONE adjustable safety razor is made from solid, premium metals, which will last a lifetime. It utilises a hefty SHORT handle (3.75") for maximum control & grip. The head can be adjusted to fine tune to your preferred aggression level. The head comprises a straight bar for sensitive skin areas & a scalloped bar for normal skin areas. The end-tip of the razor handle will rattle to drain trapped water.
- WISE, ECONOMICAL CHOICE – Replacement blades are smoother, milder, more effective, and significantly cheaper (15x-20x) than plastic cartridges.
- ECO FRIENDLY – Unlike costly disposable cartridge razors, when you purchase this product, the entire razor and all its refill blades contains zero plastic, thus 100% reusable and recyclable.
- PACKAGE CONTENT – 1 adjustable double edge safety razor (single blade razor), 1 luxury case. Does NOT come with blades. Please buy your double edge blades separately and see which brand suits your hair/skin the best. This is the ideal gift or present for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, Valentines, Father’s or Mother’s day.

The razor doors have 2 symmetrical burrs on the corners which will push the blade edges down, making the blade slightly curvy. NOT a defect. This is part of the Meiji's 2020 mold and has passed all QC standards. Despite the burring effect, razors made from this mold repeatedly give an excellent smooth shave and this has been confirmed by all our genuine beta testers.

Most people reading this are already into safety razors, so I'll try to describe this in relation to other products.
It looks cool and I like the pseudo-Japanese design queues. The handle is textured and easy to grip - I never have to worry about dropping it in the shower. It's a butterfly, so that's a thing if it matters to you. I've owned several adjustables and this one does well, again - great for someone getting into this at such a price point. I started at a 1 and worked my way up. By 3 with a Derby blade, it didn't really perform as well as I like. But that's just my personal experience - everybody's different.
Being an adjustable, this is a great razor for new people to experiment with aggression and see what they like best. I think it's great as a gift for your kids first razor or a novelty for a husband. If you already own a few adjustables - you know exactly what you're getting. Past that, it's all personal preference.
Again, at sub-$50 you can't go wrong with what you get here.
But The Emperor is naked, and we are doing no favors to anyone by pretending he is clothed.
The Emperor is CUMBERSOME. Waking up every morning to handle this heavy thing is no treat. Some like the weight, but to me it makes the flow and glide of the blade less effortless. You really feel like you're dragging and pushing the blade across your face, not a very effortless glide like their entry-level blade "The Chieftain".
I bought their entry-level blade over 6 years ago, before it was even called "The Chieftain", so maybe they've made some changes to the design since... but "The Chieftain" looks identical to what I bought all those years ago. It is a remarkable razor. It's so good that I bought a second one for my dad for his birthday about 6 years ago. And after 29 years of gift-buying for him every Christmas and Birthday, there is no other gift I've gotten him that he's used so regularly. He's in his 70s and he says it's the best razor he's ever used - and he's had a clean shaven face his whole life.
So THAT razor I give a 5/5. I am not hating on the company as a whole. They made a true masterpiece with "The Chieftain" (at least the version I bought twice about 7 years ago).
And so I bought "The Emperor" thinking "wow, if their entry-level safety razor is this good, imagine how good their top-shelf option is!"
But "The Emperor" has a few screws loose. The butterfly doors are extremely loose and wobbly, which would be enough of a problem if you didn't have to open them up for every single rinse between strokes. Yep, no matter how "open" you set the razor to be along the "1-9" scale, you cannot get a good clearing of the built up cream/soap unless you twist open the butterfly doors at least halfway. This is why I tried to return it, but couldn't since I tried to give the razor a fair shot for over 30 days. But after 30 days I could no longer get a refund. I guess that's what I get for really trying to give the thing a fair shot. I tried various brands of blades and creams, but none helped this issue with clearing the excess cream/soap between strokes.
The adjustability I really found to be useless. And I'm a guy who shaves around the base of his Johnson (to help him look taller for the Misses.) I just use my "Chieftain" for everything, and it's always been a great, smooth, effortless shave. I tried to set up The Emperor to mimic The Chieftain by adjusting The Emperor to the "7" mark (which is identical to the fixed height on my Chieftain) and using only the scalloped side (since both sides on The Chieftain are scalloped.)
Still, The Emperor's cumbersome build, the flimsy butterfly doors, and the difficulty of clearing cream/soap out of the blade area made me finally throw the blade across the room and literally shout "I'm done with this $***" Haha I'm sorry, but after over a month of trying to like it, pretending like it's a good shave because I like the design, I had HAD IT.
Point is, I encourage anyone reading this to go and try "The Chieftain". And I strongly discourage anyone reading this from trying "The Emperor". Unless all of what I've described above sounds like a fun time.
Back when I bought "The Chieftain" it wasn't called that, and it came with better packaging than what it appears to come with now. Now it looks like it comes with similar packaging as The Emperor does, which in my opinion is worse than the original packaging that my old Chieftain came in.
When I bought The Chieftain 6 years ago it came in a sleek black plastic case, a really thick and dense kind of plastic. This case has a great weight to it - a great balance of that weight, like you could just slide it right into any pocket - and the inside has this nice soft felt kind of casing which holds your razor just so. It makes me think that if there is any excess moisture on my razor (which I minimize by towel-drying it post-shave, and leaving it out for an hour or so before i re-case it) that that interior material will absorb it. If it has been doing this, it hasn't caused any smell or dirty appearance. It's very easy to keep clean.
Meanwhile, the casing for The Emperor (and what I believe is the casing for all of the Viking blades now) is a nice little box, but nothing substantial. Very lightweight, and almost too thin. It seems like if it were to get a bit wet it would be ruined, like water damage would be irreversible. Which is an odd choice of packaging for an item that is basically a toiletry. I could be wrong about that, but that's the impression I've gotten from it - it's like some kind of condensed cardboard. And then on the inside it's basically a soft styrofoam. Cheap feel. It is possible this soft styrofoam has water absorbent properties like I hypothesized earlier about the interior of the original packaging for "The Chieftain", but I am still not a fan of it.
Go and check out The Chieftain! But avoid The Emperor - he is a cumbersome fellow with wobbly drawers who is very hard to clean between strokes.
