Reeling from the painful rejection of a man he thought he loved, Asher is left holding the baby.
Ash wants a family, and is determined to continue with a surrogacy he’d begun with his ex. Bringing baby Mia home, he vows that he will be the best father he can be. Nothing in this world matters more to him than caring for his daughter, not even accidentally falling in lust with the doctor next door. Challenged by his growing attraction to Sean, and confronted by painful memories of his family, Ash has to learn that love is all that matters.
When ER doctor Sean moves in with his friends next door to sexy single father Ash, he falls so quickly it takes his breath away. The sex they have is hot, but Ash is adamant his heart is too full with love for his daughter to let anyone else in. Why is Sean the only one who sees how scared Ash is, and how can he prove to his new lover that he desperately wants the three of them to become a family?

About the author
RJ is the author of the over one hundred novels and discovered romance in books at a very young age. She realized that if there wasn’t romance on the page, she could create it in her head, and is a lifelong writer.
She lives and works out of her home in the beautiful English countryside, spends her spare time reading, watching films, and enjoying time with her family.
The last time she had a week’s break from writing she didn't like it one little bit and has yet to meet a bottle of wine she couldn’t defeat.

Luckily the new and now anxious father lives next door to a house comprising three guys, one of them being a Doctor, also Gay.
I am a huge R J Scott fan and luckily won two of her books at the start of 2023 choosing this as one of them.
I'm looking forward to many of her reads in future
A great, sweet book that arrived very quickly and well packaged
Any R J Scott book is highly recommended

Sean is an ER doctor who recently moved to the house next to Asher. He meets him by chance one night when his roommate Eric knocks on Ash's house by mistake while being drunk. While their first encounter is a disaster, Sean is smitten by the clearly tired yet hot dad.
But Asher doesn't trust easily and is not willing to allow others in. After being burned, the last he is expecting is to find someone to share his journey much less to love. But swoony Sean will show him that he is there for him and Mia. Their story is cute and filled with slow burn. There is no drama, just the natural progression of a new friendship that will eventually turn into more.
The narration by Sean Crisden is superb. Not only does he brilliantly bring Ash and Sean to life, but also the other characters.
Meanwhile Ash meets his new next-door neighbors which starts on the wrong foot. Firefighter Eric, police officer Leo, and ER doctor Sean Roberts recently moved into the neighborhood.
Because they woke his precious baby girl, Ash is NOT happy with the three first responders. At all!
Sean takes a huge interest in Asher but Ash is dedicated to Mia and has no time for dating or a relationship. But Sean knows who he wants and it helps that he finds Mia just as precious as her father does.
This is a sweet story and highly enjoyable. The characters are quirky and amiable. This quick read is worthy of your time. I easily recommend this.
So on to what I enjoyed ...
I liked Sean, Eric and Leo. A house full of first responders trying to find their place in the world. What isn’t to like about this? Also, they have a dog named Cap (short for Captain America)! Asher was every bit the flustered first-time parent. Some of his actions were things that anyone can be like, ‘yep, so-and-so totally did that’.
I really enjoyed Asher’s interactions with Brady. They got my mind moving and I was secretly rooting for a relationship to begin between the two of them. I wanted more text conversations and clues as to who Brady really is. I have my conspiracy theories, but I doubt they’ll come to be, seeing as the tone of Single is not that of a dramatic thriller.
What I didn’t enjoy …
There was so much information left out. I’m a huge believer in tossing the reader into the action of the story. But we barely got any back story to Asher or Sean. The characters were flat. I feel like I knew more about the secondary characters than I did about the Ash and Sean. There wasn’t that much interaction between Sean and Asher. I didn’t feel the chemistry between them. It was extremely short, I read it in about an hour and a half and if it were longer, their interactions drawn out, then perhaps I would have enjoyed this a lot more.
They are both kind characters and the next door neighbors theme is really well done here.
Sean's friends and housemates promise excellent future books as does Ash's on line single gay dad support group.
We get a slow burn with lovely dates with baby in tow. It is a sweet and good and a lovely read. I treasure character driven low angst romance.
It is set in San Diego which I love. However, some of the details are just a tad off and that takes me out of the story in places. La Jolla is one of the most expensive places to live in the nation for example and I would like the nieghborhood would be more like Point Loma (still really pricey) or La Mesa (cute but inland).
Overall, a really pleasure time was had. When is the next one.

I can relate to Asher soooo much! Nervous about everything when bringing a new baby home and the worry. Agh. I did really enjoy the very real portrayal of life with a little one. I loved seeing Asher’s confidence grow the more he got used to doing things on his own and always how realized having help wasn’t a bad thing!
Sean was amazing! He was such a sweet and caring character and I loved how quickly he too to Asher and Mia. His interest was in both of them from the start. He knew he couldn’t be with Asher without being there for Mia as well. I absolutely loved his little speech near the end of the book. So beautiful!
These two had a wonderful HEA and it was so perfect for them. I was intrigued about the characters in the next books so definitely want to read those at some point too! I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
