But just as hope begins to fade, she discovers a rebel plot that might put an end to Rennard’s rule…

About the Author

Bronwyn Eley joined the military right out of high school, where she learned (among other things) to disassemble and reassemble a rifle blindfolded.

After that she spent a lot of her time traveling around the world. Her favorite places (so far) are Scotland, Mongolia, Iceland, and Ireland.

Bronwyn finally found her natural habitat when she landed her first job in the publishing industry. While she has always been a writer, it was only when surrounding herself with books that she realized her life's dream was to become an author.

Unlike most fantasy books that have predictable characters and plots, Relic keeps you on your toes with many twist and turns. Original story line with so many characters that are described so well, you can literally see them formed in your mind. Love Kaylan and her determination to stay strong but also her humanity in the face of what's in store for her as a Shadow. Looking forward to the next book in the trilogy as I read this one in just a couple of days. Very hard to but down once you pick it up! Finding a fresh new face in the YA fantasy world is a true treat. Don't pass this one up!

I had the opportunity to read RELIC, book one in a new fantasy trilogy from debut author, Bronwyn Eley, and with that ending… it promises to be a great series! The book opens with an introduction to Lord Rennard, who rules over Edriast, and his Shadow – the most undesirable job in all of the land. Why? Well to be a Shadow means submitting to an early death. Enter our heroine, Kaylan, who is a bad ass blacksmith trying to take care of her family… and has been chosen to fill the position of Shadow after the latest death. What could possibly go wrong?

A STORY OF FAMILY ABOVE ALL ELSE
While I always love a good rebellion, and there is definitely one brewing here, I really appreciated that family and friends where such an important part of the story. While Kaylan may have lost sight of herself a few times (leading to a desire to shake her… often), she never lost sight of who she was fighting for. I adored her friendship with Shae (one of my favorite characters already) as well as the one she developed with Jesper and Markus. As the story progressed, there was a touch of romance but it never felt forced or overdone.

My only issue was with the pacing. It was a bit slow at first but that became less noticeable as I found myself getting more attached to the characters. I felt that Bronwyn did a wonderful job drawing the reader into Kaylan’s head to really see how she experiences the world and the effects of being the Shadow. The last part of the book was much quicker pace and the last 5% or so of the book was really intense. I loved it. I am pretty good at predicting what happens next but at the end of RELIC, I have no idea where this story is going to go. And I can’t wait to find out!

OVERALL
Overall, RELIC was a solid debut novel and a great set up for the endless possibilities that the next two books can capture, which is really exciting. This was definitely a more personal and character driven fantasy which was refreshing from some of the massive epic fantasies I tend to read. I really enjoyed the characters and cannot wait to learn more about them and the world as the story progresses.

Recommended for fans of: a bit slower paced, character focused fantasies with great female friendships, swoon worthy male character who loves dogs, and a beginning story with lots of potential for some epic adventures!

Relic is a YA fantasy with an interesting premise and protagonist. A magical stone called the Relic is worn by Lord Rennard. Though it protects his bloodline, it slowly kills everyone around him. When Kaylan is chosen to become the Shadow of the Lord, she is taken from her family to serve the mysterious Lord Rennard, and her life is irrevocably changed. Kaylan knows being so close to Lord Rennard will result in her death, and nefarious rebellions, as well as the ire of her master, could prove just as deadly as the relic.

Kaylan is a well-rounded, dynamic character who goes through so many trials and tribulations. Kaylan is not an entirely reliable narrator, and I often questioned her decisions and reactions to her actions. That being said, I feel like the Relic has a lot to do with her complex and sometimes contradictory decisions. Kaylan’s life drastically changes when she is chosen to be The Shadow, and you definitely feel for this teen who has little choice and less hope. I also like that the story is told in the first person because you get the thoughts and feelings of Kaylan, which adds such depth to her character.

I did feel that the pacing was slow at the beginning, and I found it difficult to become fully immersed in the story, but when I was about twenty-five percent through the story, it definitely picked up the pace. I also wish some of the magical elements and world-building were developed a bit more, especially regarding the Relic. However, the characters are well-developed and interesting, and the messages of friendship, survival, and family are strong.

I particularly like Kaylan’s best friend and her love interest. The relatable characters and relationships are my favorite aspects of the story. I also like how the friendships and Kaylan’s family offer some happiness and levity in an otherwise strict and unforgiving society. This is a place where freedoms are restricted and punishments are severe. Seeing close, loving, and supportive relationships thriving juxtaposes the harsh and often cruel world that they live in.

The story is a bit darker than the typical YA fantasy, and if you are looking for a happy ending, this is not the book for you. I like that the plot is unpredictable and keeps the reader guessing, and I was definitely surprised at some of the events and deaths that occurred, especially at the end. I think Relic will appeal to readers who like dark fantasy with interesting magic systems and likable characters. Thanks so much to Netgalley, Talem Press, and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

The author has written a good book. Plotting is very good.characters well defined and believable. My only reason for not giving it five stars wad the way it ended.

Kaylen is a blacksmith assistant who is destined to take over the forge when her mentor retires. Her future is changed when she is chosen to the shadow to the Lord because he has an amulet referred to as The Relic. This story has a lot of good world building and nice character development. However it is very dark subject matter.

This is a great debut novel. This dark, insightful tale is like a portrait whose eyes follow you around the room. Whilst I enjoyed reading this book very much indeed the plot's subtext also made me think about how much this fictional world parallels our own. Eley is a great storyteller and offers much to think about. I am really looking forward to the next installment.

Join Kaylan in her fate becoming a shadow. A servant destined to die in the present of an old artifact protecting her lord. Struggle and fight with her for freedom, justice and against or with a rebellion led by a stranger. Dive into the dark world and twisted fate Bronwyn Eley has imagined for this 19yo woman and enjoy the exquisite writing style. I‘m eager to read the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gritty Masterpiece of the Highest Quality

While Relic started slowly, it built to such a crescendo I rushed to finish the final 100 pages.
Kaylan, the heroine, is real in her struggles & I find that so refreshing. It's not an easy journey for her, the plot is unveiled piece by piece to draw you in, & the connections with people keeps you guessing as to who is a friend and who is an enemy.
Bronwyn made this dark fantasy such an intriguing venture and I honestly think anyone who likes Helen Scheuerer, Alison Croggon, Sarah J Maas & Lynn Flewelling should read Relic. It is a gritty masterpiece, filled with heart, tears & courage.

Relic is a unique start to Bronwyn Eley's fantasy series. It's still full of everything we love about fantasy novels, with an interesting concept I've never read before. While Kaylan is the main protagonist each character around her helps draw you in to the story. I really enjoyed how deeply she cares for her family and friends. There's a grim undertone to the world they live in which lends weight to how the story unfolds, giving you an emotionally charged ending guaranteed to kick you right in the feels. If you're after more of a darker YA I highly recommend grabbing a copy of Relic.
