4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

Ten years ago, they murdered her sister and started a war. Now, she will have her vengeance.

Anita’s sister was destined to be First Minister until a bloody day of assassinations fractured Scotland into warring factions. Anita will do anything to protect her sister’s legacy. Including finding her killers.

But an act of betrayal delivers her into the hands of her enemies. Scarred and alone, Anita trusts no one, especially not the radical faction claiming to know who shot her sister. When they force her to make a terrible choice, she realises too late that the truth won’t set her free.

The truth will destroy everything.

If you like a woman who can handle a gun, brutal dystopia and a terrifying glimpse into the future, you’ll love Captivity. Editorial Reviews

Review

"This striking debut takes us to an alternate version of Scotland where brutal factions reign supreme and our heroine, Anita, seeks justice for her murdered sister. What follows is a twisting tale of betrayal, vengeance, and fighting against forces that seem to be too powerful to defeat.

Author Nadine Little has produced a superb work of graphic dystopian adventure that delivers in every brutal detail of its well-developed reality. From just the first few pages, you are thrust into this world and committed to it, understanding the relationships between different factions and the complex social structure of the world in which Anita tries to survive. Though it is indeed an extreme world with some very harrowing experiences, these serve to produce a hero who never shies away from the fight and, in Anita, there's a bright future for powerful female leads in the action genre. The plot is as well-conceived as the immersive world in which it takes place, and there are some masterful heart-stopping moments that readers will never forget. Overall, I would highly recommend Captivity to fans seeking brilliantly brutal dystopia, and a promising new author in the field."

From the Author

This book has been two decades in the making and I can't believe it's finally been published. It started out from a dream I had as a teenager and my mum read that first, handwritten copy, which was terrible. In my dream, all the adults had fled the country, leaving the teenagers at war with each other and they split Scotland into factions. Bit of a weird dream for a thirteen-year-old. Obviously, a whole country version of Lord of the Flies wasn't believable so the story has developed over the years into what it is today--a tale of Anita Carmichael's search for the truth about who killed her sister and started a war. And it's no longer terrible.

I’m sure Ol’ Blood & Guts Patton would have enjoyed this book. The near future weapons are creative. The protagonist is tougher than a cheap steak, and gets pulverized for much of the book. Her vicious skillset powers her through a treacherous maze of murky factions, enemies, and frenemies.

Damn this book! I don't normally read dystopian books like this, but I loved Nadine Little's debut. Such a creative concept and the author executed it so well. The worldbuilding was incredible--I honestly felt like I was in this dystopian military Scotland and it kind of freaked me out haha--in a good way! Anita was such a badass. So full of fight and spirit and refusing to give up. Excited for the rest of this series!

I keep on fluctuating between disappointed and sad about this book.

It made me nervous when the first chapter introduced us to a female-rivalry based on jealousy surrounding a man, but I chalked it up to the author using this tension and pettiness as a plot driver. And, to be fair, it was. However, it was very disheartening to find that the entire novel laid heavy emphasis on this theme, demonizing the other women in the story by putting a spotlight on the main character's "purity".

We spend a good chunk of the novel following Anita, said protagonist, as she escapes from the men who want to use her as leverage in their various plans of total domination. She has no one to turn to for help, considering every woman is jealous of her being the "faction sweetheart", and will do anything to steal that position away. And she can't trust any man, because whether or not they actually hold a position of power, they all want her for the same thing.

But Anita doesn't have time to focus on that. An unquenchable thirst for revenge lives within her, one that she will stop at nothing to fulfill. One that, unfortunately, doesn't get nearly as much shine as it deserved.

I won't lie, there were points in the story where I was genuinely rooting for Anita! She could be witty, sarcastic, and funny when she wanted to be. Her dedication to survival was admirable, and despite the many high-stress situations she found herself in, she was quick on her feet when she could be.

But the moments that really mattered, her victories and lessons-learned, felt more like an afterthought than anything. Her many fights lasted all but a paragraph or two, if we were lucky to get even that. And sometimes it worked. But it more often didn't. It made for a very high-stakes, low-reward read. Which made staying with the book extremely hard to stick with at times, especially given the triggering content that makes several appearances throughout the story, specifically an unnecessary abundance of SA/rape scenes, and torture.

I do not think that I will be continuing this series. Despite Anita being a fun character at times, she was unbearable overall. Her internalized Misogyny and blatant Misandry cloaked as Feminism was distasteful and hard to read. So much of the book's attention went towards her sexual abuse and mistreatment that it felt like the story was dragging on for much longer than it needed to. And because of this, I don't have much hope for the other books going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly brutal!

I loved this book. Like, a lot. I mostly read YA and MG magic and fantasy books so some of the visceral brutality and violence took me a while to adjust to but it only added to Anita's arc. The writing is fantastic, zipping along from one horror to the next, drawing scenes that are both beautiful and heartbreaking. If you're looking for an excellent dystopian survival story with great characters, nerve-shattering torture scenes, and eye-popping violence, then you're in the perfect spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure dead brilliant!

As a debut novel, this dystopian adventure fairly rattles along. Once you get your head around the setting in a future Scotland, you are drawn in to the life of the protagonist Anita and her search for her sister's killer. Full of descriptive imagery (some not very nice), this book shows an author who is willing to let her imagination take her and this reader to places never previously experienced. A thrilling read which kept me up till the small hours, such was its grip. I look forward to the next volume in Anita's story through a country dominated by warring factions in desolate and dangerous countryside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Distopian Scotland's not a place I'd want to live.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2020
Captivity paints a picture of a very bleak future I hope we never see, but the story is well written. This book is full of action, betrayal, and death - some very messy ie dystopia, but ends with a glimmer of hope. If this is your genre, I can thoroughly recommend reading it. Nadine has crafted an interesting version of Scotland, full of intrigue, plots and nasty beasties.
