1. Buy the Barge thinner too. Thin the cement by adding 1/3 part thinner to 1 part cement. It will make the application smoother and more evenly distributed than using only the cement. This becomes more and more of a requirement as you use more and more of the cement. The cement in the can will thicken each time you use it because the thinner that is already in it is very volatile and evaporates bit by bit.
2. After applying the cement but before bonding, use a hair dryer on the cement until the sheen is gone. This takes all of about 30 seconds and will make all the difference.
I didn't realize how much cement I wasted until I was nearly ready for my second can. I was considering trying something else but after watching some professional videos and reading comments I changed my approach and got great results. This stuff is fantastic.
As the kids had a fun summer, and their rubber soled sneakers needed to be re-soled. I decided to get the larger qt version of Barge Cement.
Had a chance to use both, and the Toleune free version seems to adhere firmer between the sole and sole material.
The smell is definitely stronger when not yet dry, so make sure to have a very well ventilated area to work in.
I was able to use some rubber sealed jam jars to divvy up the cement and so far the cement does not seem to have dried out.
Once opened, apparently it's supposed to be used within two years, but I feel with the kids use and summer activities, I'll be able to use most of the cement through the year.
Uses:
fix separated sole from rubber shoes
attached soling material to reinforce barefoot merrel shoe sole
repair leather belt that separated
repaired jeans pelvis area by cementing donor jeans material to damaged jeans (sewed edged of patch to reinforce patch material)
