For myself, this is a great size for EDC. It’s a perfect size to hold in a pole like grasp without protruding through the end of my hand that much. I will say it was a bit thicker than other lights, though that makes it feel better in the hand. It works good in a Jean pocket, and can work with slacks as well (although a slimmer light may work better for lightweight dressy fabrics).
The finish on the light feels good in quality - feels durable like a lot of premium military gear/guns finish. I my prediction has come through that the finish wears nicely.
For someone that has experienced plenty of EDC lights (all of which were less expensive) and that really didn’t understand the surefire appeal, I must say I totally get it now. There’s no issues with the light, inspires confidence with its quality and durability, and performs great.
I don't love the tail cap switch and the light is head/bezel heavy, kinda out of balance feeling. I think the tail switch is a bit too easy to engage. It has a very soft feel. I carry this in my front right jeans pocket and I twist it a quarter turn so it won't push on in my pocket and drain the battery. I do not like that the switch engages so easily, but it isn't a deal breaker. The pocket clip is the same as on the other Back Up models. I don't love it, feels a bit thin and flimsy, but it does the job. I would never trust a $199 light clipped to my pocket with it though.
This light will last forever and is tough as nails. Typical Surefire rugged quality. I would buy another and recommend this one. You can trust it's toughness, durability, and reliability and that's what you need in a flashlight, especially if you are only carrying the one. The small size makes it very easy to EDC in a jeans or jacket pocket unless you wear very tight pants.
I've heard people say, "Buy once, cry once." This light is very pricey, but it'll be the last one you ever buy or need and you'll likely pass it down to your kids as well. It's going to last.
Update: the rechargeable batteries only last 20 minutes. Barely gets me through a dog walk. The throw away batteries last a little longer but definitely not a fuel efficient system with the rechargeable batteries. Take it for what it’s worth. Come on Surefire, please don’t let China pass you by. (Former Navy weapons specialist)

Update: the rechargeable batteries only last 20 minutes. Barely gets me through a dog walk. UI: Always comes on high (400 lumens) and a second tap turns on low (5 lumens). I would not recommend it for someone that uses their flashlight commonly for tasks. I would use it more for quick identification of things under 25 yards, or for low light illumination for long periods. I replaced the head with a Malkoff BGV2 (higher output) with a 3.7V rechargeable (BGV1 for CR123 or 3.7 Li rechargeable but lower output). The Malkoff BG has similar spill but stronger, wider hotspot, more lumens, and different UI.
Compared to the Tactician head and 3.7V Li: I tried the Backup MV with a 3.7 Li rechargeable and it works but is not recommended by the manufacturer. See online forum tests/user experience and make your own decision on whether it is safe to do. Backup beam is "whiter" (higher K) and has a more noticeable hotspot than the Tactician (greener, more hotspot transitions slightly more into the spill). Comparing the two with 3.7V Li, the higher K color temperature of the Backup MV and the more noticeable hotspot make the "brightness" a toss-up between the two if you are trying to run 3.7 Li. ***see next paragraph.
***Note: Backup head works on Tactician body - 16650 Li rechargeable (tailcap hi/lo works; twisting head does nothing). Tactician head on Backup MV body with 3.7V only comes on low (16340/RCR123). Tactician tailcap NOT COMPATIBLE with Backup body (different threading - won't screw on)... unless I was doing something wrong (rushing to go to work but tried 4 times).
Backup MV head works on my 20 year old Defender E-body (I don't know about newer models). Body works with my Malkoff heads and Z68 tailcap.
Reversible pocket/cap clip is good, and doesn't touch the head for easy battery removal. The Malkoff 1xCR123 body and the Malkoff clips (I have the standard and the two-way) rub against the head unless you hold the clip away when taking the head off to replace the battery unless you use Malkoff's clip standoff (adds to the overall width of the flashlight). The Malkoff pocket clips are significantly heftier.

Then I bought the EB1. It has the same TIR lens, but now they boosted the output to 200 lumens. Unfortunately it lost the well regulated output, minutes after you turn it on, the light output starts dropping. I didn't mind that as much as I hated that this new light was noticeably larger, it lost its appeal as a carry everywhere light, it's not too far off some of my 2 cell lights
Now the E1B is back as a 400 lumen light (with 5 on low, with nothing in between) and again the light output is not well regulated, but the small size is back. And it has the new MV designation which means it floods the whole area with a wide swath of light with the center area being a bit brighter). This is definitely a close up light, rather than a light up the target down the road type of flashlight. I do wish the light went to low on the first click, but the light starts out at 400 on the first click and you have to click twice to get to 5 lumens.
Even with my quibbles, it just works because I use it a lot. The size is small but still easy to grip, the beam is smooth, the tint isn't the best out there but it is less greenish than my previous Surefires, there is some knurling so it's not too slippery and the two way clip is useful. This is a no-nosense light in that it has no settings to adjust or weird button presses to remember, it is a little powerhouse of a light which happens to be dependable.
5 stars because I like the light and it feels like an old friend already, but -1 for the price which is too high, and -1 for the lack of regulation of any sort. I really wish they could have added back regulation because that was a signature feature of classic Surefire lights, but now they are playing the lumens horsepower race instead of giving a light that has lower output but lasts longer with a more constant brightness. If you don't care about regulation, consider this to be a 4 star light.
