My build:
Intel i5 7600k CPU
LEPA AquaChanger120
16gb Ballistix Sport LT (2x8gb) RAM
240gb Radeon SSD
2TB Hard Drive
Geforce GTX 1060 6Gb GPU
All in a Corsair 88R Micro-ATX case.
Pros:
Comes reinforced with every port you could want - from M.2 to four PCIe slots (two mini) to much needed SATA III.
The board is strong, sturdy.
It fits a good red/black/gray scheme.
User Manual was easy to use for cable insert locations.
Compact size fits inside any Micro-ATX case.
Port placement is very user friendly.
Keeps all fans quiet, and functional.
Navigating through BIOS was simple, quick, and painless.
Downloading the MSI drivers from the given disk was just as easy.
Cons: (mainly personal concerns)
Contrary to it's compact size, it was a little snug in my case for my tastes.
This board can house 4 fans, but with my cooler I needed 6 collectively. (I suggest getting a couple extra Molex adapters)
If you're looking for a board that has and does it all, this has got to be THE BEST ONE for the $00-$200 price range.
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2017
I had some trepidation about this choice at first, but once I got it installed, I felt a lot better. I was a lot happier with my purchase. I think in some sense we want to look at those 300-400 dollar boards, and convince ourselves we need them, but for what? I even had some regret, thinking I should have perhaps bumped up to the full ATX version of this, or to the MSI SLI, but really, when I looked at it, and the features, I realized this is all I needed; and frankly, all that most people might need. The more expensive boards mostly just add fluff, and if you do need something like SLI, MSI provides a board priced just as well as this one, that'd basically have the same feature set, plus SLI. It seemed to me that there was very little that more expensive boards added, beyond flashy LEDs, refined looks, and expanded ports; beyond what most typical users would need. The base features we all need, are there.
I think it's a really well rounded board at a good price. I like that the back IO is covered, since my case has a tempered glass side panel. On that note, I think it's a nice cleanly designed board that doesn't come across too flashy, but still gives some visual appeal. I have a 7700k installed in it, which I've overclocked. The overclocking tools seem exactly the same as what you'd get on higher-end boards, and so far it has performed well for me on that front.
There's LEDs on the back side of the board, for some lighting effects. I wish they were changeable in color. They're red. Everything is red, if it's not RGB, it's Red red red, and uggh. I can't imagine that it would have added much to the cost to make them RGB. I guess it does go some with the red accents on the board, but I'd prefer to set them to white, and let that help highlight the red accents. You can turn those LEDs off, which is nice, and there is a header on the board to support connecting a LED strip. Now, at the time of writing this review, I haven't utilized that port yet, but I have a light strip in the mail. I did investigate the software some, and noticed that they only give a small selection of predefined colors. I didn't like that, and if I find there's a way to set any color you want, I'll update this review to reflect that.
So far my biggest complaint deals with LEDs... I think the take away is that the board functions just fine. The software (MSI's Windows apps, for handling stuff like overclocking in the OS, or fussing with the LEDs) isn't bad, if you choose to use it. I think there's enough in the way of SATA ports, and PCIe slots, that it'd handle what most people need. Looking at MSI's lineup, the biggest difference between models seems to be the motherboard size, or aesthetics, with the basic feature set changing very little. I've noticed from looking at some of their boards, the components look exactly the same, with only colors and styling being different; with an odd ball component here or there being slightly different.
I spent weeks researching motherboards for a solid upgrade to my old parts (DDR3-level products.) The Z270 Tomahawk is a powerful and sleek looking machine that complements any build with red LEDs. I paired this board with a MSI GTX 1070, 250GB Samsung SSD, 16GB RAM of Ballistix LT Sport, i5-7600k CPU, and a H7 Cryorig Universal CPU cooler. All my parts fit beautifully in a NZXT Carbide Series case (red, of course.)
The BIOS interface is easy to navigate and makes overclocking a breeze. The simple "push to boost" function with my CPU took a huge stress of me since overclocking can sometimes be tricky and nerve wracking. Rebuilding my PC took no time at all with the labelled pieces on the board. And now starts up in mere moments with the included Optane boost from Intel.
My only snafu was that one of the eight RAM locking hooks was loose, but not broken. It turned out I didn't need to use that slot anyway so it didn't make a difference to me, but I'm sure it could be a concern for those who are particular about their tech babies.
Note: I use this build for streaming and gaming and requires high performance from my parts. I've been utilizing these parts in tandem for roughly three weeks without issue.
Top reviews from other countries
Pros:
No issues with installation
MSI live updated did a quick update immediatly
Nice colours and red leds (my theme is black and red)
Easy to use an navigate BIOS
Cons:
Card seems to be shorter and hung over the standoff (weird as it replaced an ATX card)
I was worried it may break as flexed a bit
Bios used my HD as a boot priority, even though Win 10 was on my SSD. I was able to fix it by going in, finding priority options and putting SSD as a profile (not a priority). Weird vs a regular bios.
All in all, I am quite impressed and do love how everything looks and how it functions. I would highly recommend. Lets hope the longevity is there as well as too soon to tell obviously.
