Like a fine wine, it took a couple of years for this to become my favorite bag
I actually bought the eBags Professional Slim Backpack more than two years ago, used it briefly, and then put it on the shelf because it was too big for my needs at the time. But a couple of years, jobs, and laptops later, and this bag has become my indispensable travel companion. However, it took some some small tweaks and perfect accessories to make this the right bag for me and earn my five-star review. Read on and I promise I'll try not to repeat the same stuff other people have written.PROS- Excellent build quality- Lots of organizing pockets- Some unique features that others do not have- LIFETIME warranty!CONS- Size and Weight- Wimpy Side Pocket- NOT TSA-friendly (laptop must be removed for scanning)- Noise (Noise? I'll explain below.)There are plenty of video reviews of this bag on YouTube, not to mention lots of general photos on Amazon and on the eBags site. So I suggest you check out some of those sources for a very generic look at this bag. But here are some details on specific strengths and weaknesses that I have experienced:* OUTSTANDING QUALITY AND WARRANTYI own a lot of eBags brand products - suitcases, packing cubes, lunch boxes, toiletry kit, and so on. Like all of the eBags brand products, the materials are really high quality (ballistic nylon shell with water resistance, YKK self-healing zippers, rip and tear resistant nylon lining in bright orange that makes it impossible to lose anything inside the bag), and well thought out organization that tells me that real travelers were part of designing this bag. eBags gives a LIFETIME warranty on their products, which I have had to test ONCE. In that case, they sent me a replacement bag as an advance shipment...TO MY HOTEL! I put the broken bag in a return box and dropped it off at the business center. THAT'S customer service.* CLEVER ORGANIZING FEATURESThe front U-shaped organizing area unzips all around and makes it easy to get to items when the bag is used either vertically like a backpack, or horizontally like a briefcase. Most pockets in this area are mesh with zippers, which keeps items from shifting or falling out when you open the pockets from different bag orientations. (see my first picture to see the bag standing on its own)The nicely padded laptop compartment is generous and could EASILY accommodate the largest 17" laptops I've ever seen. In my case, I am able to get a 15" laptop, external USB monitor, and a flat, folding laptop stand all in this one compartment! (see my second picture)The "main" compartment of the backpack has a slim divider along the back to help keep papers or a pad laying flat. The rest of the compartment is open space to use as you wish. I travel with LOTS of cables and adapters, so I purchased the BAGSMART 3-Layer Travel Electronics Cable Organizer on Amazon. (I tried many different cable organizers and this is one of the few times that an eBags' product didn't QUITE meet my needs...but I have a LOT of cables and adapters so YMMV.) (see my third picture)The "cable garage" is a special pocket that spans the full width of the pack along the bottom, front. It is actually a zippered compartment designed to hold the included hard-sided, zippered case. (see my fourth picture) For typical, everyday business uses, this is probably sufficient to hold a power adapter, mouse, and perhaps an umbrella, international plug adapter, or a few other small goodies. You may also remove the hard-side case, detach the velcro "roof" of this compartment and fold it down, and thus create a main compartment to the backpack that spans the full height of the bag. (But keep in mind if you do this the bag loses its ability to stand on its own, which may or may not matter to you.)* ONE (OR TWO) NOT-SO-CLEVER FEATURE(S)The laptop and main compartments use L-shaped zippers that go across the top and one full side of the bag. This makes them very accessible without risking anything falling out. BUT...if you don't have TSA Pre, TSA Global Entry, or CLEAR, this means you'll have to remove your laptop for separate scanning. Many frequent travelers I know have one of these (including me), but if not, this is a potential annoyance. One impact of the L-shaped zippered compartments that affects everyone, however, is that they leave only one side of the bag free for additional zippered pockets - notably, the ubiquitous "water bottle pocket". The one sad and unresolvable issue you must lendure with this bag is that the water bottle pocket is very small and has very limited elastic expandability. (see my fifth picture) It will hold a small water bottle, but not a large one for a long flight. It will hold a 16-20 ounce insulated mug (I found a nice one at Wawa that works) but it won't hold the 30 oz. YETI Rambler mug I use at home. And there's no separate waterproof pocket for a mini umbrella like I have had in a couple of previous bags. This is such a glaring problem that I am almost certain eBags will fix it in a future version of this bag...and I am glad I get frequent coupons from them so I can buy it at a discount if/when they do! :-)* SIZE, WEIGHT AND NOISEThis is a fairly big bag at 18" x 12.75" x 8.5" and nearly 4 pounds (sorry to my international friends for not using metric measurements). If you are a smaller man or woman who finds the size of the bag to be awkward, or who is more sensitive to how much it weighs, you may want to check out their Junior version of the same bag (I actually looked at one of them also and it wasn't big enough for MY needs, but, as always, YMMV). There are also ways you can get rid of some weight that I learned about surfing the reviews on YouTube. These include: get rid of the hard case from the cable garage, remove the plastic inserts from the interior walls of the bag, and clip off the many metal zipper pulls (more about that in a moment). One reviewer said he got the bag down under 3 pounds by doing all of these. I'm of slightly above average height and weight, so the size and weight were not as much of an issue for me, and I like that the bag is somewhat rigid and can stand on its own when loaded. One factor many people do not think about with a business bag is noise. I find frequently that I am walking quickly through airports, convention centers, and even office buildings. Sometimes I am "sneaking" in late to, or out early from, a meeting room. There are NINE external zipper pulls on this bag, some of which are kind of bulky and heavy-duty. As you move around wearing the pack - especially if you are moving quickly, you can sound kind of like the Ghost of Christmas Past clanking around with all of your chains! But thanks to some YouTube research (again), I found a solution using DIY zipper pulls made from paracord and heat-shrink tubing. So I was able to clip off the zipper pulls on the outside of the bag (and on my BAGSMART cable organizer) and render it almost totally SILENT with paracord pulls. (see my sixth picture) I chose to use bright orange paracord that is easy to see and matches the interior of the bag, but you could certainly use a more sedate color if you are concerned about maintaining the dark, professional look of the bag.* SUMMARYOverall, this is a nearly perfect bag if you are willing to take a few steps to "make it your own". The quality rivals bags I have owned that cost two or even three times as much, and I can speak from firsthand experience about how eBags stands by their products. If they come out with a new version that has a better-designed water bottle pocket, and perhaps an umbrella pocket right above it, I think that would take this bag from a solid 4.5 to a 5.0 in my book! But even as it is, this is a GREAT everyday business bag - highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best laptop backpack EVER!!!
Reviewed in Canada on June 16, 2022
I LOVE this bag. I did some research online for backpacks to hold my work laptop and accessories with a hybrid arrangement at work. This means commuting a couple of times a week into town via walking, bus and subway. I wanted a comfortable backpack that would protect my work equipment. This backpack is exceptionally well made. Solid stitching and thick fabric. Convenient and well-thought out zippered and elasticized pockets inside for smaller bits and pieces and a sturdy hard-sided zippered pocket for any fragile items. Good quality heavy duty zippers with generously sized pulls. Straps are all adjustable and it includes a chest strap. Zippered side pocket can be opened for umbrella or water bottle. Room for my laptop, note paper, pens, mouse, power cord & adapter, headset, phone, keys and there's room to spare. Heathered graphite color is a medium grey that goes with everything. It has a very slim profile as well unlike considerably bulkier backpacks that stick out quite a distance from your back! Full disclosure: I am a small framed 58 year old woman and this is THE most comfortable backpack for my 1 hour + commute each way to the office. I wanted to try it out before posting a review and now that I've been using it for over 3 months I can definitely say that you will not be disappointed with this purchase. Highly recommended!!
