Rogue Ethereal #5

Priestess of Storms & Stone

Rate this book
If there is one lesson I’ve been taught in my life, it’s that fairies are the absolute worst.

Finding a fledgling succubus in Faerie is like locating a needle inside a realm-sized haystack. With a guide I can’t trust and a goal more ephemeral than smoke, my odds of success are tenuous at best. Not to mention, as the last Elemental in existence, I have a giant target painted on my back.

Because one half of Faerie wants me dead, and the other half wants to use me as a sacrifice to open the gates to Earth. But I swore I would find my quarry, and I will. Even if I have to rip the entire realm apart to do it.

There is a storm coming to Faerie. And that storm is me.

Priestess of Storms & Stone (Book 5 of the Rogue Ethereal Series

"You look like mayhem and magic all rolled into one--which has been your aesthetic since the dawn of the wiggle dress."

03-30: I've been wanting to explore the 'Rogue Ethereal' series by Annie Anderson for some time. So, when I got the chance to read her upcoming release-- 'Priestess of Storms & Stone (Rogue Ethereal Book 5),' I jumped at it.

As I haven't read the previous books in the series, even with research.. I won't go back and talk about the origins of any of these characters. However, the lead-- Max, is incredibly likeable. She's funny, she's got a smart mouth I can completely relate to, and she often seems to subscribe to the 'throw punches first, ask questions later' belief system.. which I..

..well, I plead the fifth on that one.

This book finds Max on the trail of a newly turned succubus, making her way through the realm of Faerie, along with her entourage of guardians, friends, and family members. As is to be expected, not everyone's a friend. There are those who want her dead and those who want to use her to their own ends, but she's made a promise and intends to keep it. She's loyal and seemingly made of determination.

"The rational part of me knew I sounded co-dependent as f*ck. The irrational part of my brain told the rational one to go f*ck itself."

It's a well-structured novel with a lot of page-turning action. I feel like it's a bit of a guilty pleasure read because the author just seems to draw in as many tropes as possible and run with them. Long lost relative? Got it. Buried psychological trauma? Got it. Fated mates and tragic origins and characters who are not what they believe themselves to be? Got all those things too.

That's a pattern throughout the book actually.. the author loves to compile and collect. There's are multiple worlds of creatures at play, from fawns and dryads.. to demons and angels.. to wraiths and shifters.. even a kitsune.

Action scenes read the same way. They tumble constantly from one situation to the next, always potentially in some new and even greater danger. Even down time is used efficiently to further story or build relationships.. or develop characters.

"I leave you alone for five bloody minutes and you've gone and caused the apocalypse.."

I'm not complaining. It's a really fun book. Annie definitely knows how to manage all those spinning plates with ease and none of them ever hit the floor unless she wants them to do so.

Sure, there are a few things that I'm not typically a fan of.

There's always an easy answer to pretty much every situation. Max instinctively knows how to solve them or who to ask or exactly what to say or do to keep moving forward. Everyone in the group is perfectly reasonable once they understand why someone acts in a certain way. Her demon boyfriend is a perfect mixture of loving protectiveness and supportiveness for her independence. And there's always a convenient, easy way to deliver/receive information.

The difference is.. with this book.. I just didn't care. I was having such a good time, she made it all work. And I applaud her for that.

I flipping love Max! I love the character development, the world building, and the supporting characters. There are unpredictable plot twists, so I never get bored. I love how the characters are so relatable. I feel as though I know them. Whenever I cry, my husband tries to remind me they are fictional characters, but they aren't; they are my friends. The entire series is so good, I'm sad that it is ending soon, but I guess Max deserves her HEA.

Annie Anderson juggles many characters in this series, but this makeshift family has one main thread in common: Max. Whether it’s working with Max, doing things for her best interest, OR trying to make sure she stays alive (it’s mainly this one, lol) never let it be said life is boring!

Max going to Fairie to undertake a highly unrecommended rescue, learning about her powers in fast, dangerous curves, and possible endangering everyone she holds dear... Max brings new meaning to chaos, but darned if I didn’t enjoy her latest adventure!! Snarky banter, action, surprises, back stories that answered a few questions I had...and oh my goodness...Max’s immense emotional growth!!

Thank you, Annie for this book! I stayed up late to finish and LOVED it!
I’m soooo ready for the next book after that wild ending!

After the devastating loss in Hell Max has to pull herself together to get to the bottom of the mystery that is Melody, who is must certainly dead from the first book and how a very dead with her soul moved on and all woman could come back to claim her baby. That can’t be right? Well Max isn’t quite up to her usual Max standards what with grieve still dragging her down and all. But she has her trusty gang of sidekicks to go on an adventure to a place she wanted to visit less than Hell. Max is not down with the fairies whether she may be one or not. Witch, Demon or Fae it don’t matter cause Max is one of a kind and no matter what else happens Max will Max it’s her special superpower and well you know possibly leave a lot of destruction and chaos in her wake but that’s just how things go.

I adore Max I do but her incessant guilt for literally everything drives me nuts. Nope you aren’t at fault for Melody’s untimely death... you aren’t really responsible for her son... you got him sent to a good home that was really all you could have done and really you didn’t get your sister killed. For one thing all Max ever did was try to save/protect her sister if anything what happened to her is their mother’s fault because wasn’t she kidnapped a couple books ago because of pass things involving Mommy dearest and her coven of demon enslavers? Sorry Max dear you really don’t get to be guilty for everything that ever happens to everybody. And Maria made her own choice at the end of the last book isn’t it disrespectful to her memory to be so annoying about it?

Ok complaints done let’s move on...

So Max is now a Fae or was always one but her parents were hiding her and her identity until of course it suddenly became necessary to let the cat out of the bad in the sucky way her parents tend to do things. This new version of Max comes with more power and an unfortunate glow. But new look aside Max is still Max. But she’s determined not to jump into things blindly she wants to figure out what’s going on because she does not want to go to Faerie. Nobody does. And everybody makes sure to tell her it’s a bad idea. So naturally despite all that and what she manages to uncover guess where she ends up?

So it’s off to Faerie we go. For you know trouble danger and shenanigans and Max’s colorful phrases.

I love Max always of course and I adore Alistair I’m happy things didn’t go badly with them after the whole his father kinda killed her sister thing. I would so love for Marcus and Barrette to adopt me like they basically did Max. Still hate with a fiery passion Striker because like everything else this is all his fault.

I’m always sooo happy and grateful to get an ARC and I waiting impatiently to get it and yet couldn’t start it because the end always leaves me wanting to scream when I get there and there are no more pages. I did know better of course it happens every single time. And I just want the next one yesterday alas I know life doesn’t work that way and I can’t magic things like Max. So until next I’ll just be sitting in a corner staring at the wall waiting for more because I mean there isn’t a bad book in this series they are all obsession worthy.

5 Cranky Stars

Max is back and ready to fulfill a promise she made to Melody. A promise that will as usual land Max in a realm she doesn’t want to be in fighting a battle she can’t avoid. Amidst all this Max is finding out who she really is and how she fits into the world with that knowledge. She is shouldering great blame when it comes to her sister, feeling gut wrenching betrayal by her best friend, and finding out that she is better with Alistair around. She accepts the ring on her finger and her destiny and gathers her family, friends and paladins and sets out to find Melody’s son Ronan. What awaits Max and the gang is more than they bargained for (not I’m not quoting Fall Out Boy) and it will take all the creatures of Faerie to finally defeat their common enemy once and for all while trying to convince a deadly tree to stop the evil that lurks beyond a sinister gate.

I adore Max and I swear the more ramped up she gets the funnier and her language more colorful. Seriously y’all she called a Kelpie Karen when it acted like a douche and refused to give her a name.

I loved all the tender moments Alistair and Max shared. I felt like a proud mama watching them two fall in love. Finally. I also loved that Max had tender moments with her mom. This story wasn’t all mushy though that battle. Phew!! I just love this series and I have a feeling we are nearing the end and that makes me sad. Though the ending to this one made me a tad angry, but I know Max is an avenging goddess and she will tear the world apart to find who is responsible for this. I have hope so don’t steer Max wrong Ms. Anderson.

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Annie Anderson!

Priestess of Storms & Stone
is the fifth book in the Rogue Ethereal series and continues the story of Max and her friends.

It was no surprise that I was going to love Priestess of Storms & Stone because the Rogue Ethereal series is just amazing. I really like the world Annie Anderson’s created because I love a good series with a lot of supernatural characters. On top of that, she made a badass female protagonist with a sexy love interest… You’re just destined to fall in love with this series!

I just cannot get enough of Max. She’s been through so much and discovers even more secrets in Priestess of Storms & Stone and she keeps being a badass female and she keeps saying everything that’s on her mind. I LOVE HER! And Alistair is still my number one, he’s just the perfect husband for her and I keep imagining his sexy British voice when I read ‘love’.

A lot of things happened in Priestess of Storms & Stone and a lot is going to happen in the next book, I’m sure. The way Annie Anderson ended Priestess of Storms & Stone was really evil and I just need the next book ASAP!

Rough read

This book was disappointing to me. I didn't enjoy it, wasn't interested in it, and almost stopped reading it a few times.

Sure, there was still constant action, but it was almost too much. There's only so much that can happen, someone can only be so great. But Max just became more and more amazing. She went from witch/human to demon/witch to elemental fae to demi-god elemental fae, daughter of Chaos. I couldn't get behind it.

Most things that happened in this book just had my eyes rolling. It was standard, typical, predictable, oh so amazing, proved how great she was, etc etc.

There was quite a bit that just didn't add up either, and I was just kind of left questioning what happened and why.

The ending was an interesting cliffhanger and almost makes me want to read the next one too, but I just can't after this one. It was a rough read and the next one could be too.

In book five of the Rogue Ethereal series we learn more about Max's backstory in this page turning read. I loved how strong Max is and her relationship with Alistair is great. They are perfect for each other. This book has it all drama, action, suspense, magic, secrets, twists and a cliffhanger that left me wanting to read the next book asap. Max is bad with a brand new addiction... actually it’s an upcoming fight. She has to make a trip to the very last place she thought she’d ever have to go to. Faerie. She has to uphold a promise she made to keep Melody’s son safe which means she has to push aside her unwanted worries and traipse through the lands of the fae to find the fledgling succubus.

Faerie... it’s going to be memorable, no doubt. Don’t worry though, she’s not going alone. Della, Aiden, Teresa and Alistair are going to be right by her side. It’s a trip that changes Max’s view of a few things. And of a few people. There are many creatures and people that she meets on her way through the lands. Some friend, some foe.

The story shows you that not only can Max and her Paladins, and husband adapt to things, quickly but Max is on the spot, act now, react later kind of girl. We’ve seen some of that before but this time, it’s more intense. Max will become the judge, jury, and the punisher. Giving orders, taking names and kicking butt the only way she knows how to. Fast and Hard.

There are many revelations that Max must discover and explore all while keeping him task. Her ability to multitask is most definitely put to the test. Needless to say, it’s a great story and I can’t wait for more.

Priestess of Storms & Stone (Rogue Ethereal #5) by Annie Anderson

***5 stars***

Max is back, and full of her usual spunk with a little extra shine and sparkle thrown in. Every pun intended. (You will understand when you read...LOL).

We finally get the backstory of Max and who she really is, and where she came from. I never thought I'd say these words, but it actually made me feel a bit for Teresa, who we also learn more about.

There is a battle in Faerie happening, and it tests everyone and everything. I mean why would it not? It's an absolute fight for the truth and for their survival.

Nonstop amazing, per usual. Max and the gang is never ending entertainment and awesomeness!

Where do I even begin?! From the very start of this book, you’re immediately immersed in action, love, sorrow and excitement. I didn’t think it was possible for Max to be any more badass but in this book she takes it to a whole new level. I couldn’t put this book down and I am absolutely dying to read the next!

I knew with the end of the last book that this one would take a whole different direction, but the transition was jarring. It feels like a whole different series now. Max is incredibly powerful at this point that makes almost all conflicts feel pointless. I'm happy with the ending that Melody and Strider got.

OHMYGOSHILOVETHISBOOK!! Max just keeps getting better and better with each new story and Alistair a little more dreamy. Max and the gang head down to Faerie in an effort to find Melody and her son Ronan. On this trip down the rabbit hole we get to learn more about Della which was a treat. I for one am hoping we get to see a little more of Torren. A cliffhanger ending, I can’t wait for the next installment to see where they will venture to next. A great series I would definitely recommend.

I am so excited I got to read this as an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. I fell in love with this series right of the bat, and when I got through book four, I was feeling rather bereft about not having access to the next book because it wasn't written yet! Cue tears of anguish. So, I was extra happy when she posted in her reader group (which you should definitely join) on facebook that she was prepping ARCs and we could sign up for one. Obviously... I did that real quick.

I loved this, so much. Yes, I gave it four stars instead of five. There is a reason, and it's not even a particularly good reason, but it's an honest one. One of the key features of this series is the breakneck pace of the plot. Poor Max, she needs a vacation B.A.D. It's just one thing after another for her! So, what knocks a star off my rating is that this one felt really, really slow. I think it's that I got spoiled.

Now to be clear, it felt like a slog to me, BUT, (big ass BUT here), it was for a good reason. Basically Max has some serious revelations to work through in this book. Like, SERIOUS revelations. The kind that change a person's life forever, and it's not yet clear whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. She has to process the knowledge of who she really is, as well as trying to process the constant perceived betrayals of those around her. Catch that "perceived" part, because throughout all of it, while I understand her hurt, I feel like she lets get the best of her in a bad way.

Basically the beginning of the book, (well first three quarters of it really), feel a lot slower because we're seeing Max's character develop in a re-birthing kind of way. Her character gets a makeover in terms of how she sees herself, as well as her friends/family. It almost like starting over, and we join her as she tries to get to know herself again.

Now that doesn't mean that she's a different person. All the things we love about Max are still there. Her take charge, don't-piss-me-off attitude is still there. She fierce kindness and compassion are still there, and really shine in this one. While there are major changes in her life and her view of herself, she's still Max, never fear! And the last few chapters of the book really fly, again. The pace picks up at the end... and then ends in a cliff hanger.

So... I am bereft again. (Cue more agonized tears). The good news? There is another book coming! The bad news... I'll have to wait to read it. This is the problem with ongoing series'. I love them, and I hate them.

This book doesn't disappoint. Highly recommend. I love this series, and even if it was a bit slower to start, it's only because I can't help but compare it to the other four adventures we've joined Max for. Pre-order this, buy it, read it! It's awesome!

ONE NON-STOP THRILL RIDE!!!
Fantastic! Annie hits pay dirt with this action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, adrenaline pumping, page flipping bombshell, hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. A tumultuous wild ride with a bevy of exasperating events and baffling circumstances, thrusts those churning emotions into play front and center, wrapping it up and heading home. Sparks fly as drama, intrigue, tension, underlying currents, turmoil, danger, mounting suspense and unexpected situations along with a boatload of adversity while dodging bedlam, you have one mind-blowing masterpiece. Anarchy, escapades and havoc run amuck, booting this gem into a tempest, bursting it into a hissy with a prize winning culmination. Maneuvering through daunting trials and grungy tribulations, noting the thrilling twists and wicked turns, testing our characters in ways they could have never envisioned. The characters are authentic and genuine with depth and individuality that feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive it's like being transported to ground zero with them. Fantastic job Annie, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.

4 Not Birth, Not Blood, Not Death Is Going To Change That Stars

Priestess of Storms & Stone is the fifth book in the Rogue Ethereal series by Annie Anderson.

This series is so much more involved in the other races of Ethereal, and even those that are still other but not technically Ethereal. We've met angels and Demons, Dragons and warlocks, and now we meet gods and Fae. That Max has to travel to Faerie to save a woman whom she thought was dead, and her infant son, shouldn't really surprise anyone. Especially when you finally learn her true origins. Max draws chaos to her.

I want to say I'm surprised that Max now has a Throne of her own in the Seelie Court. But, honestly how many times has she set out with simple intentions and then been pushed to do more, save more, give more with the best of intentions? Her Aunt was simply too much of horrifying tyrant to simply let be.

Now, we must find out more about her father. That in death he is hiding in a pocket realm waiting to see his children and wife makes my heart weep for him. I don't know whether he believes their souls will find him, or if he means that there might be some of her siblings still living... But what truly confounds me is the Unseelie... What purpose did he make them for? They seemed to only seek endless, blind death for all they came across..

Finally, Max and her mother Teresa have manged to find common ground. It's beautiful to seem them learn to accept each other. And that Liltih is so willing to knock Max upside the head when the little voice in her head tries to tell her that because they aren't blood they aren't family.

I think most of all, the pivotal moment was when Max was asking herself when she had ever felt as good as she did the moment she tapped into the land of Faerie. When she finally learned what she was always supposed to have.

I'm guessing that the fake Alistair is the one Unseelie creature that stood above the rest, and defended her..

I'm sure I entirely trust Striker.. It's possible all of his deceit was the fault of the compulsion magic on his mind. But it honestly is hard to tell given how he has acted this entire series..

I made a mistake. I decided to move forward and read this book even though I ended up working late. Starting at 10 PM to read this book when there is 1 more book, not one of my better choices in life. Sleep or read... sleep or read... Read it is!

Ready for another wild roller-coaster ride? More of Max's past is revealed. Max finally learns where she comes from and why she is so different than everyone else. Why she is wanted by others and despised by some. Just like a few characters in this book, all the signs of why Max can do what she does was there. We just didn't fit the pieces together quickly enough. Because of Max's success in solving the impossible, she is now tasked with another quest - bring back the crazy half demon from Faere. The fact that Max would prefer to go to Hell than to go to Faere should say something.

Max's growth in power and maturity in this short amount of time is fun to watch. I like that she doesn't abuse others now that she is in a position of power. She continues to lead by example. Although, she's still crazy with her kamikaze plans. What I liked about this book is that she is building relationships with more people. She is starting to tentative trust again and depend on others. This is huge due to the repeated traumas she's had over the years. Faere may be the end of her though. Trying to keep a promise when so many side quests divert her attention is brutal.

Not sure how much more Max can take because she hasn't even had a chance to take a honeymoon. This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who enjoy intense pressure on the female lead.
September 28, 2020
Max is still suffering the devastating loss of her sister when she’s hit with the stunning news that not only is Melody alive, but she’s stolen her son Ronan and taken him to Faerie. Max is determined to keep her promise and make sure Melody’s son is safe, so against all objections she and her motley crew head off to Faerie.

For her entire life Max had no real idea of who or what she was. In this penultimate book of the series, she finally finds her answers and so many things that have happened in the past finally start to make sense. This book doesn’t move at the breakneck pace we’re accustomed to with this series. Instead, much of the book deals with Max’s personal growth as she deals with a new revelations , new powers, her relationship with Alistair, and a seemingly impossible mission. Not to worry though, we all know life with Max is never boring and there’s plenty to feast on here despite the slower pace. The last few chapters of the book give us the explosive action we’re used to and lead to a jaw dropping cliffhanger.

As usual, Annie Anderson doesn’t disappoint with Preistess of Storms and Stone and while I’m extremely sad to see this series ending, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

At first I was thoroughly enjoying where this story was going. I liked that melody was brought back into the picture. I’m glad we finally have a reason why striker was such a dick and wasn’t around. But the whole transition of max being the last elemental fae as well as being an demi god/fairy was a little too fast paced for me. It is really cool and we learn an even greater amount of max’s heritage, if not all of it.
At this point, the whole miraculously being able to fix anything she wants is kind of getting old but I have gone this far with the series and I believe her development is worth finishing. Speaking of development, max’s “parents” are really pulling through for her in this book and I’m all for it. It makes me glad that max is not pushing them away after learning the truth.
I would’ve given a 3 star only because I had to take a break from this series and stop reading this book right before the last battle. After picking it back up I decided a 4 star was adequate due to not rally short on the ending. It’s an interesting cliffhanger and is the only reason I will read the next one because I’m very hopeful for her and Allistair.

This is the fifth book in the series and they must be read in order. It seems that Max can’t catch a break. She has always thought she was a rogue witch. Then learned that she was part demon. Now she has learned she is neither. She is fae. Her glammer has been removed. She made a promise to Melody to protect her son. Someone has taken the boy. In fact it was Melody herself or at least that is what someone wants them to think. Max must now go to faery and rescue Melody and her son. Things are about to get even more interesting for Max. I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down once I started. Max is fantastic. Though it seems she never really gets to take a break. Her and her team are going to face some difficult things on this journey. Max is going to learn more about herself as well. This is a fantastic book and I can’t wait for the next one. I can’t say enough about this series and highly recommend it.

Max is back and she's even better than before. I think you could read this as a standalone but you'll miss all the backstory so I highly recommend reading all the books, in order.

Max is a world unto herself. She's fast to act and she's made a promise that she'll keep even though everyone tells her it's a BAD idea. But she always keeps her word so she and her friends enter Faerie where she has more enemies than friends.

Fast paced action. You'll read it in one sitting because you won't be able to put it down. Max is perfectly imperfect. She's learning as she goes and she's more powerful than she knows. That doesn't mean she won't fall down but she always gets back up and makes the bad guys sorry. I am eagerly awaiting the next book. While there isn't a hard cliffhanger, we are definitely left wanting the rest of the story. Highly recommended.

Well if this book didn't tear my heart to shreds again. The truths just keep coming in this book. More lies and secrets are uncovered. Some beneficial and some not so much. Many things still remain unclear in this story. I'm sat here wondering how much more my girl has to go thru before she finds her peace and happiness. How much more is going to be taken from her before she can't take anymore? With the power that she has I hope we never find that answer.

With the last book staring me in the face. I almost don't want to crack it open and begin. It will be the end of this fabulous journey and I'm gonna miss all these wonderful characters. At the same time I am wondering what other secrets will be revealed? I have so many questions yet that need to be answered.

The fifth book in The Rogue Ethereal series is amazing. Max is grieving and still wrapping her mind around everything that happened from the previous book. She's determined to keep her promise to her sister. So, Max and Alistair set out to do so, along the way they end up hearing rumors in regards to the Unseelie Court that involve her sister. Not something Max expected, she's now determined to search for the truth. It's a book of dealing with loss and going through the grieving process. We see more growth in Max and Alistair as together their bond changes and they search to discover the truth.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
