Publisher's summary

To help his allies, he’ll make the world his enemy.

Cha Ming is back in Verdant Crossroads, and for now, his allies are safe. The Thread Seer has chosen to honor her promise and has begun crafting a new body for the Monkey King.

Her seclusion has not gone unnoticed, however. Verdant Crossroads’ traditional allies are giving them the cold shoulder, and their neighbor, the Republic of Fendal, is now eyeing their territory.

It falls to the junior Thread Seer, Clever Dusk, to cobble together a defense—and to Cha Ming, her teacher, to help her. As a craftsman, Cha Ming has no trouble finding allies. But he and his friends are much better at finding trouble instead.

But maybe all the chaos they’ll cause is a good thing? Cha Ming’s research on rankers and Daoism infringes on the domain of the gods. The last thing he needs is for Mendin’s deities to notice him.

Love the story but man you’re cruel

I’ve loved following Cha Ming for some time now. I’ve also unfortunately gotten used to the fact that his own author doesn’t spare the guy at all. He likes to torture Cha Ming and halt his progress at every turn of the journey. He never has any form of smooth growth. This book however was a very heavy nail in the coffin. You really made him loose his girl twice and both times because she sacrificed herself to save him. As if you haven’t emphasized his weakness enough already. Then you go and do that nasty stuff at the end with the cursed sovereign. Life wtf. I swear if this book follows the cliche Chinese drama trope where the MCs girl becomes his greatest enemy just because she doesn’t remember or is on another side then I really am going to scream my head off. I don’t want to see an evil Uwen. And for God’s sake what did you do to ShaoBai. I love shaobai and now you put her in some sort of curse or trap of some sorts. That’s sooooo not fair. If Uwen becomes some sort of Dart Vader then im really truly going to start hating this series.

Excellent twists plus turns :)

Patrick Laplante continues to seamlessly add new characters and plots that to the ongoing epic brilliantly. Can’t wait for the next book!

Another Hit

Huge fan of the series! Please keep them coming!

There was little to no personal progression for our MC in this novel but we finally get to see a glimpse into the greater karmic tapestry. There were some surprises that surpassed my expectations of where the story was going. This book concludes the Inkwell plane war story arc and the prologue has me itching to see where fate will land The Painter next.

Great sequence, great story! Draws you in

This one wasn’t the sometimes predictable meditate and level up installment. My best part was the WAR! The change of perspective from face-to-face, to birds-eye view during the battles was so much fun! Great job !

The Story has gotten a bit boring

I keep listening to the story and hoping for some new progression, some excitement. But its gotten a bit boring.

Our main character doesn't progress, in fact he loses progress.

Some big issues in the world are finally wrapped up. But I just keep wanting to see our main character have fun and grow again.

The parts with the void are described in a confusing way that is hard to understand. This seems intentional, but I don't like not understanding elements of a story. So I dislike these moments in the story.

The ending was lack luster. I can only hope the next book is better. It appears to be leading up to a change for our main character and a chance for growth. So I'm hoping the new book will get back to progression and some fun.

As far as narration goes, I wish the narrator would add some more energy to the narration. It feels like one long calm voice the entire time.
