About Caran d'Ache
Ever since the creation of the Maison in 1915, all Caran d’Ache products have been produced in its Geneva workshops. Since its beginnings at the dawn of the 20th century, Caran d’Ache was the one and only manufacturer of writing and drawing instruments on Swiss soil, it has been part of this same lineage of excellence, technical quality and craftsmanship.
Colour pencils and inks are systematically tested for their lightfastness, while fountain pen nibs and ballpoint or roller pen tips are checked in terms of their priming quality and writing flow. Individual controls are conducted regularly in accordance with requirements and product types.

What's in the box
Product Description
The Caran d'Ache Luminance 6901 40 piece colour pencil set is a combination of the highest lightfastness and the smoothness of a permanent lead. Every shade has been formulated using finely-ground pigments chosen for their purity, intensity and resistance to UV. Colours can be blended, burnished and layered on a variety of surfaces. The casing is made of California Cedar from managed forests. The smoothness of the Luminance 6901 leads require the use of a well-sharpened pencil sharpener. The pencil cap indicates the colour of the pencil lead.

Even though they are expensive I wish I had gone the extra mile and gotten more than 40 colors. On the other hand, since they work almost as well as other brands I suppose the 40 are good enough.
The color range is good.
They seem to be sturdy enough - no unusual breakage. The box they come in has extra padding that's permanently bonded to the bottom of the top tray and to the inside of the box cover to protect the pencils. There's also a foam mold to hold each pencil securely in it's place. This packaging really adds a lot to pencil protection. Other manufacturers would do well to copy this package design.
Recommended if you're willing to shell out the money. Beginners should use the very popular mid-range brand if they want something better than bargain level pencils before buying something like the Caran d'Ache pencils.

J'en reprendrai.
Ottimo prodotto ottimi colori, raccomanda al 110 per cento.
Having tried most coloured pencils, and loving many of them, I have to rank these above all others. While the Faber Castell Polychromos are durable, nicely pigmented, and highly lightfast (most of their colours are rated *** excellent and **Good), I find the Luminance to be just as durable, just as lightfast, with superior pigmentation. There is no need to apply a lot of pressure when using these pencils, the pigment lays down smooth and rich, and the layering you are able to achieve here is outstanding. I used these pencils on a recent piece where part of the surface was heavily compromised (long unfortunate story), and the Polychromos are too hard to use on this delicate surface, and while the Prismacolour are much softer, they do have lightfastness issues (not all colours are lightfast). The Luminance worked wonders here, and the affected area no longer looks compromised at all, and I am still able to layer colours due to the softness and vibrancy of these pigments. These pencils really did save my work.
The barrels are thick, and robust, with a generous colour core. They apply smoothly and even with little pressure, you can achieve a beautiful, saturated result. These are not as hard as the Polychromos, but not as soft as the Prismacolors; I find them in between in softness. They are durable, as I was able to get a very fine point without experiencing any colour core breakage issues like I have with the Prismacolor, and *some* of Derwent's coloured pencils. For fine art, these are worth it, and for colourists, you will not find a better set of pencils with the biggest negative, again, being the price. While all professional grade coloured pencils should offer smooth colour performance, rich vibrant pigments, and a good range of colour, the Luminance outdoes them. I have even compared these to Derwent's newest line of lightfast pencils, and although they are great, I find these are better as the lay down is a lot softer, creamier, and unlike the Lightfast pencils, I did not experience any breakage of the core when sharpening. Overall - excellent coloured pencils.
