I chose this specific tent after looking all over creation for several days for a tent that pops up and folds back down tiny immediately, with no additional parts, pieces, or assembly. I have an old pop up tent that serves as a little hideout for my dog, and when my niece comes over, she just won't get out of the dirty thing! She adores hiding in there, playing with toys in it, spying on people, and even just crawling in and out.
I could hardly believe it: I only found two single piece tents in that shape/size, both in camo, but... she's a 3yo princess. I really wanted to get her one very much like mine for several reasons, in addition to her loving it, but besides the two camos, there were very few indeed that met the necessary criteria.
- Pop up and fold away. They live in a small house and simply do not have room for big toys to stay out all the time. A fiddly tent with poles and assembly is a more permanent fixture than one that disappears instantly, and that's simply not acceptable in a small house.
- One single piece, zero assembly. They are busy working people with 3 other (older) kids, and as this was a gift, the last thing I could bear was it being a burden on them in any way. Having to either rig up the poles and all that, then break it down again, every time she wanted to play with it would suck, as would having to tell her no she cannot bring it out because it would be in the way or there isn't room. And having to keep track of, or just open and store, more than a single part - or worse yet lose a part and render the tent useless - was not an additional responsibility I was willing to give as a gift. No 3yo's parents ever want *more* crying or *more* junk!
- Fit a couple/few kids at once. Her siblings are a little older and *unlikely* to want to play with a "kiddie" toy, however they may very well want to play or just hide out in there at times, or she may ask them to play inside. The tent had to be big enough to accommodate other kids, just in case.
- Not gigantic and unwieldy, but not tiny baby size. It had to be big enough to play in properly, but still have a small enough footprint to fit easily in a small room *and* stay out of the way when up. I would hate to give a gift that she could not play with because it was an imposition on the whole rest of the family, or worse give a gift they let her keep out which ate up precious floor space. It needed to be easily brought out to use and put away when done, or I wouldn't give it.
Apparently, there are VERY FEW pop up play tents that meet all of those criteria anymore! The vast majority of kids' play tents appear to either be only partially pop up and require support poles that must be tied in relatively permanently, or be entirely pop up with no poles but comprise multiple pieces like separate roof and/or floor pieces or even additional "rooms", or actually be single piece and fully pop up but also TINY and designed for small babies or young toddlers one at a time. Innovation, I guess... ;)
But finally this cute little tent came to my rescue!! It's all just one single piece, completely self supporting, which pops open pretty much instantaneously, and it folds/rolls up for storage in like 5 seconds. Seriously. There is absolutely NO FIDDLING required (the fold away technique can be tricky at first, as with all tents like this, but it's quickly mastered).
It folds down to a pliable, mostly cloth disk, probably around a foot (or so) in diameter and maybe an inch thick at most, so it can be slid into the closet or under the bed or behind furniture and completely out of the way. It is big enough to hold 2-3 kids (depending on size/age), but since it's longer than wide, it can slide up against a wall or in between furniture when out for play time. It's so small and simple that it can be taken anywhere and set up and removed with pretty much no imposition, which can give bored kids some diversion and maybe even a central location to be in for the duration.
It also seems to be holding up well. She's had it for 3 months, and it still looks pretty much new. It gets opened and stowed often and it's holding its shape fine, not sagging or leaning or anything like that. The fabric is apparently sturdy; no tears or frays yet. The colors are still vibrant. Pretty good for the price, I'll say!
The parents are apparently quite pleased with this tent, too, which was very important to me. It's nothing at all to set it up and take it down, so they're able to let her play in it just about every time she wants to, which is quite often. She's (mostly, hah) okay with putting it away because it can come back out soon, so minimal temper tantrums, crying, or added stress over this item. They keep it tucked away and completely out of sight and out of the way until play, and even when it's open it's not taking over the house. She even brings it over to my boring old lady house sometimes when they come over, and we always know where she is without having to breathe down her neck or bore her to tears. Plus, the act of popping it open itself always elicits a laugh, at least from a 3yo. Hooray! A hit with everyone!
My only real complaint is that the item description said one piece, just pop it up, no need to insert frames, but when it came there were 3 small rods in the box, and no assembly or poles had been my top priority! Turns out, though, the small rods only go into the fold down "service" window to keep it rigid, completely unnecessarily, so they are toooootally optional and don't even count as additional parts in my opinion. The rods were simply discarded, with absolutely zero problems. It's just that they had me a little worried and annoyed when I saw them in the box!
The tent does come out of storage wrinkly, since it's rolled up and twisted when stored, but that's just unavoidable. Kids don't seem to care much about wrinkles anyway, and if you do, well, then, maybe I hope you get tennis elbow from ironing! Also it DOES NOT come with any kind of storage bag or tote, or anything that secures it into its rolled up position. That can suck because the tent is designed to pop out into shape, so it's springy when rolled up and can come undone. I happened to still have the package from my dog's tent (plastic bag thing about 13x13x1" with zipper and handles), so I gave that to them, but anything even *remotely* like that would work to hold/carry it in. Or you could just tie string around it, or secure the edges with chip clips or something, and it will stay in place just fine!
To make a VERY long story short: I absolutely recommend this little tent (or the school bus one for something less pink) for both kids and parents! Setup really IS instant, and putting away really does only take 5 seconds or so, and it offers kids a place to hide out and play and imagine and be kids. The rods it comes with are the very definition of dispensible, and the lack of tote/holder is very easily solved. I highly recommend the (apparently rare!?) one part only, self supporting tents to any other kind for reasons of space, convenience, time, kid corraling, entertainment (diversion?) value, and stress-free...ness. If you're looking for a thoughtful GIFT for a young kid, I doubt you can go too wrong with this; kids love these, and parents don't hate and may even like them.
This has been a great addition for the kids as they spend hours playing with it.
Assembly and storing is easy and doesn't take much space. Stitching seems sturdy as well but time will tell how this holds up.
