Shattered my old Apple TV remote somehow. Wanted a new one. Read reviews (which are VERY IMPORTANT) along with light research of my own, and ended buying this updated version of my shattered remote, but WAY BETTER!!! Perfect track pad, tad longer, & gurthier…if that’s even a word, but nevertheless, the BEST remote Apple has put out in recent releases!! Bought a glow case to jazz it up a bit because the remote it’s self doesn’t come in Black yet, but doesn’t matter with the Red Glow case. Other colors…GLOW CASE SOLD SEPARATELY!!!! 😎
I have the Apple 4K TV 1st Generation and its been pretty great for me so far in our living room. Some of the pains and quirks I've had over the years was just the remote. It wasn't the worst remote I've ever had by any means but it wasn't the greatest either. Once I found out the newer remote was released I thought I would go ahead and try this generation of the remote and see if it was better. Overall I'm very happy with the decision that I made in purchasing the newer remote and ditching the older remote.
Overall I really like the feel of this remote. The size of the remote is slightly larger in my hand (which I think is a good thing). It feels really solid construction and has that Apple quality feel to it. I like now that it has the direction buttons around the click pad. One thing I always disliked about the previous generation of the remote was the fact that my thumb would feel like it was on an ice skate rink or sometimes the remote and apple tv would be have some sort of lag. I haven't had this issue ever since upgrading the remote. It's also cool that it has a power button on the upper right corner of the remote instead of it being a menu to put the Apple TV to sleep.
Setup was incredibly easy. I stood fairly close to the Apple TV. Pressed and held the Back button and the Volume Up button for 2 seconds and bam, done. My other remote unpaired and the newer remote was ready to go.
It's kind of unfortunate the last remote for the Apple TV was a little bit of a pain to live with and having to switch over to the newer one. I still don't see a reason for upgrading to the newer Apple TV as of yet so I feel like this is a better purchasing decision for now.
I have 4 apple TVs, and am considering buying one of these for all of them. I bought this as a test for our main room TV. I find the touch pad on the standard remote to be very inconsistent, especially with certain apps.
I turned off the swipe/scroll feature, so I have to click the outside ring to navigate. It works so much better for fast-forwarding through commercials and that sort of thing. Just a few taps and you zip through a commercial break. Works really well with YoutubeTV, Disney, Netflix, Prime, Etc. Only downside is that they are a bit pricey. This remote is also a bit thicker than the original remote so it doesn't seem to disappear into the couch cushions quite as often.
I have an Apple TV 4K that works great. It delivers great visual and sound quality. Then comes the remote that was included in the package with the Apple TV. In my opinion it is complete junk. It does not meet the standards we have come to expect from Apple. It is too tricky to use and feels like something you would find in a Cracker Jack box. Got this new upgraded one and it made a world of difference. The look, feel and use of this new remote is what Apple should have offered in the first place. It's well worth getting this remote for the outstanding Apple TV 4K. There was no setup just turn on your TV and it's ready to go. Good job Apple!
THIS... Is Apple's latest and greatest remote control and is exactly what apple should have made the apple TV remote as since day 1.
This remote is absolutely fantastic, it feels great in the hand and everything is within reach. I love writing good long reviews on products but this product is so good I spent $60 to replace the remote I already had that worked just fine because this is such an improvement.
NO MORE TOUCHPAD!!!
USB C and Lightning is another plus as well!
Overall, this is a great remote and I love taking it from room to room with me until I replace all of my old apple tv remotes. It is pricy, but this is how the remote should have been done from the beginning. Only thing it is missing is a speaker so I can find it when I loose it!
We had a functioning 1st Gen remote but my wife did not like the design of the touch pad. She really wanted the newer button and touch design. We have had the remote now for several months. My wife is happy with the newer button and touch design. Personally I feel like I was faster with the Gen 1 touch pad. I do like the dedicated on/off button on the Gen 2 remote. I actually think I preferred the voice button on the front (Gen 1) instead of the side (Gen 2).
I feel like Apple REALLY missed out on an important opportunity to include the find-my-device capability in the remote because these remotes are small and the more accurate find capabilities in new phones would be super helpful. We decided to get a case for ours with an Apple air tag but your options for cases that include a slot for an air tag are more limited. It would just be an obvious upgrade if that functionality was included.
We have had some issues with the voice input being flaky in that the Apple TV will capture input but then erase it once you release the button (which defeats the purpose). It never used to do that, but I can’t honestly say wherever that is the remote or some software upgrade to the Apple TV.
Of course the Gen 2 remote is nicely packaged and feels well built just as you would expect from Apple. And pairing the new remote was super simple.
Is it worth an upgrade if you still have a working Gen 1 remote? That depends how you feel about the Gen 1 touch pad. As far as my wife is concerned it was worth it!
If you don’t have a working Apple remote at all then you might as well get the latest.
This remote first of all, is very ugly and looks horrible. I really liked the old remote because of The way that it looked but now, I am sort of glad my wife accidentally dropped it in a drink and drowned it, gave me an excuse to buy this remote. The trackpad was a mistake on the old one, the buttons are awesome on this one I’m glad that it can turn into a trackpad if need be for games but I really don’t play games very much anymore. Overall 100% worth the upgrade, accidentally, wink wink, drop yours in a drink and have an excuse to buy a new one it’s expensive but worth every single penny, and yes it does work on the previous generation of Apple TV that had the ugly I mean the very nice looking, but ugly to use remote.
Thanks Apple for vastly improving your WORST product. The Siri remote is everything you expect from Apple- well designed and manufactured. A reviewer complained about the increased weight over the original Apple TV remote, yes it’s heavier and larger than the old one but this is a good thing, the original was too fragile. My arthritic grandma(who’s 112 years old ) commented how light the new one is . Intuitive to use and easy to pair. I bought a protective cover for the new one as I have a fifteen month old grandson who should have been named Hercules and is obsessed with remotes , he thinks it’s light too.
Was a bit hesitant to get this remote after my apple tv remote shattered. After hearing back from the community who answered my questions, I purchased it. It is much more sturdier than the original apple remote, and paired easily.
