Death to the Emperor: The thrilling new Eagles of the Empire novel - Macro and Cato return! Kindle Edition
AD 60. Britannia. The Boudica Revolt begins . . .
Macro and Cato - heroes of the Roman Empire - face a ruthless enemy set on revenge
The Roman Empire's hold on the province of Britannia is fragile. The tribes implacably opposed to Rome have grown cunning in their attacks on the legions. Even amongst those who have sworn loyalty, dissent simmers. In distant Rome, Nero is blind to the danger.
As hostilities create mayhem in the west, Governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus gathers a vast army, with Prefect Cato in command. A hero of countless battles, Cato wants his loyal comrade Centurion Macro by his side. But the Governor leaves Macro behind, in charge of the veteran reserves in Camulodunum. Suetonius dismisses concerns that the poorly fortified colony will be vulnerable to attack when only a skeleton force remains.
With the military distracted, slow-burning anger amongst the tribespeople bursts into flames. The king of the Iceni is dead and a proud kingdom is set for plundering and annexation. But the widow is Queen Boudica, a woman with a warrior's heart. If Boudica calls for death to the emperor, a bloodbath will follow.
Macro and Cato each face deadly battles against enemies who would rather die than succumb to Roman rule. The future of Britannia hangs in the balance.

At the beginning of the book you'll find two well-drawn maps of Britannia and Camulodunum (now Colchester) in AD60, as well as a chain of Command, followed by a Cast List, while at the back you'll notice and Author's Note where the historical details are very well explained by the author.
Storytelling is absolutely excellent, all figures, whether real historical or fantastic fictional, come vividly to life in this story of war and death, and especially our main protagonists Cato & Macro are very lifelike, believable and humane in their dealings in life and war with their fellow Romans as well as with the native tribes, while the increasing hostile atmosphere and hatred come very much to the forefront.
This book is set during the years AD 60/61, with Cato at one end and Macro at the other end of Britannia.
The tale starts off with Cato and Macro escorting Queen Boudica of the Iceni towards Londinium to renew her pledge to Rome and its Governor Suetonius, after the death of her husband King Prasutagus of the Iceni, when during that voyage she's robbed of her tribute to Rome by some Roman bandits.
This misfortune to Queen Boudica will set in motion a series of events that will result in the eventual begin of the revolt against the Roman oppressor, with as the main culprit of this oppression the Procurator in Londinium who's called, Decianus, with Macro as a late witness to these cruel atrocities towards Queen Boudica and her daughters, and thus Macro's world of peace at the Colony at Camulodunum will eventually turn into a hellish place of war and death, while Cato is one of the officers in Governor's Suetonius's army to conquer and annihilate the Druid stronghold of Mona.
What is to follow as a whole is a fantastic and action-packed Roman adventure, in which Boudica's revolt with the annihilation of Camulodunum as just the beginning of a much greater rebellion that will probably continue in the next volume towards its inevitable end and the destruction of the druid stronghold Mona will be the main focuses, but during these bloody actions in Camulodunum Macro will lose some very dear family members, from the likes of the mute boy Parvus and the dog Cassius towards fellow soldiers and in particular the spy/assassin Apollonius, and all this due to an act of madness by the Roman procurator, Decianus.
Very much recommended, and although I've read the equally superb "Gaius Valerius Verrens" by Douglas Jackson as Manda Scott's "Boudica Quartet" about the Boudica Revolt, this is a terrific "Boudica" addition to this great series, and that's why I like to call this episode: "A Superb Boudica Revolt Start"!
