About the Mako II

Sharks have remained virtually unchanged for millions of years, so we thought it was time for an upgrade: most notably, the new Orient caliber F6922 and a more robust 120-click bezel – sometimes evolution needs a kick in the fin. Since the mid-2000s, the Orient Mako has been the most popular Orient series to date. With so many diver watches available, it could be said with confidence that the Mako is one of the top affordable mechanical diver watches on the market today.

A great piece at a fantastic price

A great piece at a fantastic price
Knowing Orient is a value proposition brand, I had to own one. The Mako II ultimately was my choice because I enjoyed how it has the vibe of a Breitling Superocean 42, and an in-house Orient caliber. This was the first 22mm lug-width watch I've purchased, which forced me into purchasing a rubber strap as well as numerous Natos from Crown & Buckle. I've enjoyed the larger feel of the 22mm straps on this watch too. The bezel action was stiff at first but the action is getting better with time. I find the larger indents on the bezel incredibly easy to get a finger nail in when the hands are to slippery to move the bezel - great thinking on Orient's part. The red tipped second hand provides a great contrast to the black dial and white indices. I've read others complaining about the Day/Date window and I don't understand that. It's very pleasant to see both complications included in a watch at this price point. These are incredibly easy to set up. One area of complaint is the crown. I find it very stiff and hard to screw down all the way, finding myself closing it with my fingers inside my shirt as it can be slippery and as stated, stiff. Once it is down you know though, which is a good feeling. The build quality is above what I expected for this price range. It feels more expensive, but I know it is not. I'm looking into sending this watch off to have a ceramic bezel and sapphire crystal put in it as I'd like to use this watch in my collection for years to come. That is subjective and a me thing however as I enjoy wearing this watch on and in the water. Overall, Orient provides a fantastic value here. As you'll notice in my photos I do not include the factory bracelet in the photos - I'm not a factory bracelet person, it's Nato or Rubber for me on all of my collection. Again, totally subjective, but handling the factory bracelet I can say it is much better than others in this price range. This is just a great looking watch for any enthusiast looking to score a nice diving piece. If this isn't the one for you aesthetically, they have plenty other options in the Orient lineup sure to fit your needs. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unreal for the price
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2019
I bought this watch over a Seiko SKX as my “beater” watch. While it doesn’t quite have the character of and SKX, it does look classy and refined. It has become one of my favorite watches for the simple reason that it is an astounding value. Anyone should be able to make a great watch for $5,000. That doesn’t impress me much. But when you make something like this for under $150, that is special. First, the watch does not feel cheap. It has a healthy weight to it. The details on the dial are very good. Yes, the bezel is not easy to turn because the knurled edges are too smooth. But, really, who needs to turn the bezel on a dive watch other than a diver? The bigger issue is the crown. They really crapped the bed on this design. You WILL need to use fingernails to turn it. This is really an annoying oversight because the rest of the watch is so nice and this would be such an easy thing to address. Other than that, it a lovely looking watch and as you can see from my pictures, it does really well on NATO straps. It’s is also EXTREMELY accurate. Mine gains 3 seconds per day. To put that in perspective, my $2800 Tag Heuer Aquaracer gains 6 seconds per day and my $4500 Omega Speedmaster gains 4 seconds per day. How this watch is more accurate at $125 is beyond explanation. We will see how well it stands the test of time but, really, if I get two years out of it it will be the best watch purchase I ever made. Plus, although I enjoy it’s looks, I don’t worry about it when I wear it because it’s so inexpensive. That alone is a great weight lifted because with my nicer pieces I’m always conscious of the fact that I have thousands of dollars on my wrist and that leads to some anxiety. Not so with this watch. You really cannot go wrong with this. No it’s not a snooty brand that will get you oohs and ahs from the douchy watch snobs, but this is really what a watch should be- accurate, attractive, durable, and inexpensive.
