Product Description
THE No.09 CARBONSTEEL POCKET KNIFE
The No.09 Carbon Steel Folding knife is great for larger tasks. Fold it up and stow it in a toolbox, or in your backpack while camping. The large profile of the No.09 knife makes it great for bushcraft, large wood carving and longer cuts.
The blade has been designed and perfected over generations to maximize the cutting quality and ensure it’s easy to sharpen after years of hard work. Use it in the garden, at the dinner table, or even on your next adventure. Keep the knife in your pocket, purse or toolbox and we are certain you'll love it for years to come.
THE RIGHT FEATURES AT THE RIGHT COST
The patented VIROBLOC locking mechanism keeps your knife safely closed in your pocket and locks the blade open during use. The simplicity of the knife’s design and it’s sustainable wooden handle makes the knife lightweight too!
THE PERFECT SIZE FOR EVERYDAY CARRY
Both smart and simple, the Opinel folding knife is composed of 5 elements: the blade, the wooden handle, the fixed ferrule, the rivet and the rotating VIROBLOC locking ring which was added in 1955 to sizes No.06 and above.
The knife is equipped with a 3.51 inch blade, open length 8.18 inches.
CARING FOR YOUR KNIFE
All Opinel wooden-handle knives are not designed to be washed in the dishwasher. Heat and moisture will cause any wood to swell which will make the knife hard to open at times. Opinel suggests carefully hand-washing and immediately drying the blade with a soft, dry towel. Lubricating the blade with cooking oil before closing the knife is recommended (this prevents oxidation).
MADE IN THE FRENCH ALPS FOR OVER 130 YEARS
Joseph Opinel designed his first pocket knife in 1890, creating a tool that is as robust and functional as it is simple and beautiful. From his workshop at the foot of the French Alps, Opinel forged a cult classic. Generations of artists, explorers, and farmers have carried the instantly recognizable, imminently useful Opinel knife in their pockets.
Little has changed since 1890. Rooted in history and a commitment to craftsmanship, the Opinel family still makes their knives in the Savoie region of France. Each year, THEIR team of 150 employees in France manufactures over 5 million knives, ranging from outdoor tools to kitchen knives, all to honor Joseph Opinel’s focus on quality and simplicity.

However, those modern added features come at a cost. If you're after a quality, VERY sharp blade for low cost, this is simply the best deal you'll get (or at least the best I could find).
Here's what I love about the knife:
* The blade is extremely sharp. It wouldn't shave hair off my arm like my Mora Companion did out of the box, but somehow it actually seems sharper when it comes to actually cutting. It sliced a tomato with just the slightest (less than a 1/16th of an inch) sawing motion to cut the skin. Pruning small branches is like cutting butter. It sharpened a stick with unbelievable ease and smoothness. The blade feels and acts thinner than it actually is (meaning it is stronger than it looks), probably because the entire width of the blade is beveled at apparently the same angle, from the spine right down to the edge.
* The whole knife is very lightweight and sleek in the pocket. I don't even know it's there.
* The locking mechanism works better and easier than I expected from the photos. It locks the blade both open and closed, and although it has to be done manually, it's easy to twist the collar. It holds the blade open or closed plenty effectively for anything such a knife ought to be used for.
* The look and feel is cool. The wood handle has a nice feel and is comfortable to use. The blade is nicely machined and looks well-finished.
* Did I mention it's SHARP?
With all that said, there are some things I find less appealing:
* The all-wood handle makes me hesitant to use the knife for some tougher things that I assume the blade could handle. Maybe it's just me, but I don't have enough confidence in how the blade attaches to the handle to use it for mcuh more than "normal" slicing tasks.
* The blade has absolutely no "snap" to it when opening or closing - not even equivalent to an old penknife. It's just a blade on a swivel, and therefore lacks any tactile positivity when opening or closing the knife.
* Although the locking mechanism surprised me at its effectiveness, it's only effective if you remember to do it. Although it will doubtlessly become habit with time, I still prefer an automatic lock.
It should go without saying that those nitpicks completely disappear when one considers the cost of this knife. Sure, I could (and hopefully someday will) get a $45 Buck pocketknife that will have the modern features I like with a quality blade. But until then, I'm confident that this knife will excel at anything a non-tactical pocketknife should ever be asked to do.
Bottom line: If you're after a sharp, quality blade on a budget, this is your buy.
I took it to 15 degrees per side and I must say the steel they use takes a mighty fine edge (as fine as powder metallurgy steels, takes an edge very much like CPM S35vn does on this type progression) it's a complete mirror finish and will whittle hair WITH THE GRAIN and that's dang impressive.
How long it will hold the edge I can't speak to yet but judging by how it felt on the stones it will hold an edge decently... I would say it's around 58-59RHC so not super hard but pretty hard (the steels heat treat is excellent and it feels very good on the stones and deburrs very easily) its also very quick to sharpen and strops very well so I would assume you will be able to easily maintain the edge with just stropping so long as you don't get any rolls, dings, chips etc in the edge for a while until new steel is needed. I did do a simple 400, 600 grit diamond plate edge on it for two sharpening to remove burnt steel from the factory edge (this is a must with all knifes as when they sharpen them on belt sanders its burns the steel so it will take a couple sharpening to reach good steel that wasn't burnt and you get peak edge retention)
My normal EDC knifes are PM2s, Manix 2, Manix 2 XL, PM3s and some other spydercos and this wouldn't replace them but is a perfect in the pocket pocket knife to accompany my normal EDCs that cost many times more so should I need to use it for tasks that I wouldn't use my higher end knifes for that's where this Opinel comes in to play.
Over all a excellent little knife and if the steel holds an edge decently then it's an amazingly pocket knife or back up pocket knife for us guys and gals that like to carry two knifes.
I will say this the factory edge was not good at all, decently sharp but a very poor and inconsistent bevel.. But the steel cuts well so it was easy to fix the bevel and it really didn't matter to me any how as I was going to put my edge on it before use anyhow. By my sample I would not expect a shaving sharp knife out the box, mine wasn't close to being able to pop hairs. The blade geometry is excellent for a very slicey knife and will cut card board and stuff like that very easily even when not that sharp due to the thin blade stock and flat grind... The #10 is fairly thin behind the edge as well, the grind is perfect for a 15 degrees per side edge geometry. I will update if the steel isn't able to hold up with a 15DPS edge and let everyone know if it should be a 17 or 20 DPS edge. By how it felt on the stones it should hold up decent and not roll with 15dps edge so we will see.
- Comes relatively sharp straight out of the box, ready for immediate use.
- Easy to sharpen, even for those with limited experience in knife sharpening.
- Maintains its cutting edge for a long time.
- Gives off a vibe of sturdiness and durability, seeming well-made.
- Highly recommended for anyone seeking quality without the hefty price tag.
